The Silence is probably the coolest and scariest creature ever to be brought to Subnautica. For the record, it was the thing canceling your sound. It's how it hunts.

Yeah, when the sound cuts out, it is coming for you.... Lol as if a scary invisible killer in the void wasn't bad enough, you know it is coming, but not when. Also, people who don't know about it get puzzled and distracted by the audio vanishing, setting them up for a perfect jumpscare.

No sound in nature is just as bad as a predator right besides you, it means something is wrong, so literally any and every creature, especially underwater where almost everything usually uses some form of echolocation, would just instantly nope out of its territory the moment everything goes silent. Plus I don't know how it would even do that...

@@f0x1ro1 Not exactly true. The area of silence isn't its territory, but it's hunting range. So it is too late to run once you are in it. Also, as you said yourself, most things that deep rely heavily on echolocation and sound. This mute field would effectively blind their targets moments before being hunted. That's very advantageous. Also, the principle of how to create silence like that exists in reality: it's how noise canceling headphones work. Not sure how the leviathan mechanistically accomplishes it, but still.

You know how sound is a vibration? Well, a vibration is basically a tiny back and forth movement, the behavior of which we visualize as a waveform. This back and forth vibration spreading from air particle to air particle, if you apply an opposite but equal force in the same rhythm and frequency, both vibrations nullify each other. Noise canceling headphones accomplish this by using a microphone to pick up sound outside them, then transporting and inverting the signal (remember, electrical signals move much faster than sound does in air), before playing back the inverted outside sound, timed precisely so that both vibrations cancel each other out, leaving nothing or whatever you were listening to through the headphones.

It could theoretically make itself invisible for other creatures using echolocation if it cancelled the sound waves directed at it specifically, but even that would basically not be feasible, because it would have to know the sound waves are directed at it before they reach it, and then muffle them with its own sound waves. The mute field is completely unrealistic though. If it actually managed to make all sounds disappear, it would have to instead make all those sounds itself, which would instead make it... Extremely loud. Which would be funny to be honest, an extremely loud creature called "the silence" that makes all other sounds "disappear" by continuously screaming nonstop. As for the advantages of it, yes, while it's advantageous, it's also a huge disadvantage, because yet again, the moment it happens you instantly know that the thing is around, meaning you'll be on high alert. It would help with hunting prey that relies on echolocation, since it would confuse it, but then it would also have to be either smart enough to outmaneuver that prey trying to escape randomly, or fast enough to catch it anyways, at which point... Why even have the field anyways if you're just going to use speed to hunt? Basically, it's an extremely niche biological "quirk", and while cool, in open waters it's not *that* useful and can even be disadvantageous. But if it lived in caves? It would be disastrous. Taking away an ability to see from any creature it finds, making it unable to properly navigate closed spaces. That ability becomes much more feasible and useful in closed spaces...

honest to god congratulations on facing your fears. its so easy to watch a video and be disconnected from whats happening, but actually experiencing it is a whole different thing and the fact you knew exactly how scary it was to you and still went ahead and did it anyway is not only impressive but admirable. i mean hell, ive watched so so many videos of different playthroughs of different people, and i have stopped playing myself cuz i cant deal with fucking crabsquids. i lost 4 seamoths to those things and cannot force myself to continue. i know exactly how to complete the tasks to finish the game. i know where i need to go and what i need to do. actually doing it is a whole nother thing

Well congrats on facing your fears again. Butch x Bacon is the collaborations we didn’t know we needed until we saw it. As for the way you got the cyclops, first of all the video was about you encountering the mod leviathans, not about you sweating to get the stuff normally so it’s fine. Besides you getting jumpscared by the cyclops spawning in made it worth it. And it does mean it hurt less when the Silence got you.

Also on the point of phobias: I have Saligarophobia (fear of snails) to the point of freezing at the sight of one. But nontheless I beat Legend of Grimrock, which has giant snails as enemies, on my father PC simply because I wanted to prove I would be able to overcome my fear (and beacuse the game was good). In real life I'm still shook to the core in confrontation with this phobia and I had to quit other games due to it. But I got this small victory in finishing Legend of Grimrock, just as you had with Subnautica. 💕

Just so you know for your next project. Nothing you changed mattered in this. The Leviathans were just mere locational goalposts but they didn't make it scarier for you or anything. "The Silence" might be the only exception. For example "The Gulper" was under the floating island but going there was the hard part for you not facing the Gulper. Saying "go to the seafloor beneath the floating island" would have been similar or even harder for you. I enjoyed watching it because it was new but I also very soon realised nothing you changed made you squint as much as the wide sea and darkness did. As far as I know there are mods that lets Leviathans spawn in random but immersive locations. Also increasing the water depth for 100m or 200m would've maybe been a good option. Something that makes the daytime a bit darker and the night time pitch black. Something like those would've maybe been a better option as the "fear of the unknown" and "sudden noises" are your problem not the monsters themselves.

Phobias aren't stupid, and I think you were pretty bloody brave. I am the same way with heights, and I literally can't play on the edge of cliffs or floaty things -- which sucks, since floaty-in-the-sky-land-pieces have been all the rage in games since WoW's Burning Crusade. If anything it's worse in games, because in real life I can just avoid heights entirely and not have a bunch of people tell me (patronisingly, I might add) that there's nothing to be scared of. As someone with Thalassophobia as well the silence was so incredibly terrifying I can't believe he even went into the void in the first place 😭 When I played I couldn't even scan the Reaper I got stuck between a rock and the Arurora I was too terrified to leave the spot I died due to lack of oxygen. I did end up beating the game though!
