This is so true. Clothes are hugely important not because of how they look but because they tell your brain what to focus on. I work from home. During my work hours, I wear work clothes. It helps me to not get distracted because my clothes are telling my brain "we are working right now".
@seralynn72869 күн бұрын
I'm going to try this. I've actually had a couple of awkward situations where I've had to be like, "uhh, sorry, my camera....isn't working right now," because I'm in my pajamas or just kind of sloppy in leggings and a t-shirt lol. I don't often have to be on camera at meetings, so I just got lazy, but sometimes for whatever reason they ask for whoever can be on camera to do so. Although I don't think it impacts my ability to do my job, it definitely could increase my confidence or even how friendly my coworkers perceive me.

I also find buying better quality clothing helps to love what you wear. I’m retired and I wear athleisure wear most of the time but I now buy “nice” athleisure wear. The clothes I walk in and work out in have also been upgraded so I look nice even when taking a walk. It helps my mood to put pride in what I look like.

I saw the thumbnail and tuned in with some skepticism because usually videos about clothes suggest "dressing up" more and things like doing your make-up (if that is something you do) and hair. I absolutely hate getting dressed up, only wear make-up on special occasions and have finally accepted that I will never be someone who "does my hair." But I do have a daily uniform, and it's the same thing every day (I have 6 pairs of identical black pants and one grey, and a few others for spare). I wear those pants, a tank top and a t-shirt layered over it every day and I love it! I love not having to ever think or make decisions about what to wear. The pieces I have chosen, especially the pants, make me ready for anything. I can sit on the ground to pet a dog, do yard work, housework, run errands, ride my bike, hike, even do a workout if needed (although I prefer leggings). I liked that you talked about how your clothing can help you feel how YOU want to feel, and I love being ready for anything!

When I was getting ready to retire I was at work thinking I wanted to wear sweat pants everyday. I retired one year ago and I wear black sweat pants everyday. I wear a white shirt, and a fleece jacket if it is winter. When I have to go out, I just slip on a pair of nice jeans, and I am ready to head out. I was wearing crappy clothes at first and didn't feel good about the way I looked so I went through my clothes and got rid of the beat up stuff. Now I am working on a minimalist wardrobe.

Lol.. This is TRUE!! My mom retired & just stayed in her PJ''s.. she'd put clean ones on after she got up, but they were still pj's.. anyway, she could NOT figure out why she didn't feel like doin anything.. I told her... MOM... GET DRESSED!! And reminded her... because she'd worked in long term care for years... They don't allow people to stay in pajamas all day even in the nursing homes!!! NOW GET DRESSED.. She knew I wasn't lying and finally listened.. problem solved!! For clarification... sometimes pjs all day, but as a general rule, able residents get dressed and go to the dining room for meals and it's for their mental health.. hope this helps.

I made a simple swith on my morning habits 2 days ago. I am picking out my outfit the evening before and laying it out. I am telling my self how I want to feel in the morning the evening before. Surprisingly I have maintained a joyful attitude heading out the door by implementing this one choice. I don't feel rushed and discouraged by opening my closet and standing in front of my wardrobe with a blank stare. I am consciencely deciding to pick articles of clothing to set my mood for the day. I did this for my children while they were growing up. Now I am taking care of me. It feels good.

Love all of the mental and physical benefits your shared from getting dressed for the day. We treat ourselves and others treat us differently depending on what we're wearing. Cass from Clutter bug says, "Don't have bullies in your closet." Have you heard of Dressing Your Truth by Carol Tuttle? She has helped me SO MUCH! There are 4 different types and when you identify your type and what looks good and feels good on you, it is a game-changer. It saves a lot of time and money because it becomes so simple to know the styles and colors and patterns that will look best on you. Highly recommend figuring out your type and sticking to those clothes (jewelry too).

I notice this in the AM for sure. If I stay in my pjs, I feel a little yucky and sloppy. Once I take the 5 mins to get dressed in jeans and a shirt, I feel better! I no longer wear leggings or casual wear out in public (unless exercising), and it makes me feel much more polished. With four kiddos six and under, dressing a little nice, and doing my few mins skincare routine and a little makeup really feels like self care!

I will say, this is a great post, even if it did make me giggle. As someone with chronic illness, I will 100% go to the store in schleppy clothes. I'll either run in and out OR I'll do a Walmart pickup and not get out of my car. I'm so thankful that I don't have to deal with anyone wanting to bother me like in your 2nd scenario. I live in a rural, economically disadvantaged area. My 2 closest neighbors ignore me and I ignore them. Other than them, the nearest neighbors are out the road a piece and I know them but only to nod and wave if we pass each other on the road.

You knocked it out of the park with this video! For me, at least! I always feel better if I am confident in my looks, but the “practical” side of my own brain couldn’t make sense of it because I also felt like it was manipulating what reality is. So I feel like I’m being “fake”, but confident when I make a bigger effort, and “real” but not confident when I just put on “whatever” that fits and doesn’t fall off. My body shape for the last couple decades is not easy to make look flattering except when I’m pregnant, which is only twice, so that adds to difficulty. “They” say embrace your body type, but when I do I am constantly asked when I’m due…especially when I’m happy. At any rate, I feel the same about makeup (“fake”, but confident vs. “real” but not confident). I was coming out of some rough stages in life last year and beginning to wear makeup more, when my eyes started acting weird so I stopped wearing eye makeup, which actually makes the most difference in my appearance and confidence. I wish there was a way I could feel like I’m being natural and still gain confidence I get when wearing eye makeup. Sorry for all the extra details. I don’t comment on videos much, but I watch a lot of yours, and this one was extra helpful to me, especially as you noted the research you found about the subject. Thank you!!!

This is 100% true!! I recently lost 140 pounds from a year long battle with illness (blockage pain for 19 years) and I needed new clothes so I bought dresses instead of more frumpy tshirts and jeans and more hoodies. My dad only dresses "up" when he goes out of the door and sees people, at home he wears the oldest clothes imaginable. And not because of comfort or because he likes them. It's almost like he does not feel worthy of them at home. He has depression and I always tell him if he wore clothes he normally wears around other people at home as well (new clothes, nice clothes, not talking about anything formal here) it would be much better for his self-esteem and general well-being. I hated only being allowed to wear old clothes at home. I tell my kids at husband that even if no one sees us we still deserve to get to feel our best in our nicest clothes even with no one but family around. This goes for so many other things. Like nice plates that people only use for guests as if they don't deserve to use them otherwise.

My goal is to have dedicated clothes for a) office, b) housework, c) relax, d) sleep...so that when I put on my office clothes my brain switches into business mode, when I put on my ripped clothes and sneakers, it's time to get things done around the house, when I put on my pajamas, my brain starts to wind down for the day. I've always struggled with getting incredibly overwhelmed with housework, and I'm finding this has helped. It's a work in progress but I 100% believe all this to be true and possible...and beneficial.

I've been a little bit jealous in the past of my husband's easy wardrobe - 5 work outfits, 3 pairs of jeans and 6 tops for home and 3 pairs of jeans and 6 tops for out of the house. And my kids easy wardrobes. 6 tops, 6 bottoms (they have some dressier stuff hung in my closet but like 2 outfits each) and then there is me - who loves to thrift and never had anything to wear 😅 I gave myself 30 hangers. Including jeans and jackets and coats. Besides that I have socks and under things, 2 leggings and 2 joggers and everything else is stored away! And I go through often and declutter what didn't make the cut! But having less immediate options helps me get dressed easier (4 pairs of jeans, 13 tanks, tees, sweaters and sweatshirts, 8 hoodies, flannels, cardigans, and 5 coats and jackets) it's definitely NOT as minimal as my kids, and I would like to experiment with less but it is still helpful in having less options available.
