Eugene Butler (1935 - 2024) was a long-time friend of our congregation, frequently attending services and concerts here. He published over 1,000 works with over 50 publishers, and our choir premiered some of his anthems. He was a UMKC alum, and a scholarship fund in his name was established at the Conservatory to be awarded yearly to an outstanding student in choral conducting. He conducted and taught in 39 states, three Canadian provinces, and in England. He sadly died in March, age 89. I have conducted this bold pronouncement of Christ’s birth for over 50 years.
