I found your channel recently and I have been enjoying it. I am 52, and been reloading since my late teens. In fact, I had a Lee shotgun loader at 13yo. But, I still learn from your videos. That got me thinking that you are doing a real public service by making these videos. Fortunately, I started learning from a good friend that worked at a gun store, and he loaded ammo for them. But, someone who wants to start loading and has nobody to learn from is at a huge disadvantage for a hobby that could be hazardous. What a close second your videos provide to help someone get started in the craft. And like I said, I am still learning from you. Thanks!!

I know with Barnes bullets before they started making those relief cuts in the bearing surface like their modern bullets or those 62gr Makers trex bullets you could go from good to significantly over pressure really fast so when you add in the fact of how long these bullets are you end up with major pressure signs. What confuses me with this is I'm assuming you come up with your AR-COMP load data in the same places you come up with the TAC load data but the TAC loads were perfectly fine. Reloading is really weird sometimes... LOL

18.8-20.9 looks like a more realistic range for this bullet. To be hones, Maker mentions that they supply bullets to OEM's, so I am thinking they might be the manufacturer for Barnes. All of their bullets sizes and types seem to match up with Barnes' lineup. Price is similar as well. I will have to pick up the Barnes manual. I've heard it sucks and doesn't include the TTSX bullets, but it should be a much better starting point for these all copper bullets. Thanks!

@davidpeterson61478 жыл бұрын
here is something else to think about. The 5.56 chamber has a longer lead (or throat) to allow some of the pressure to get past the bullet before it engages the rifling (this is the main difference between a 5.56 and 223 chamber). With out this difference the engineers had problems with the primers being blown out when the M16 was being tested. It could be the longer bullet ogive is taking up enough of the lead to cause a pressure spike and merely shortening the COL might allow for your original starting loads if you find other load data sources for the same starting load data. Contact the manufacturer of the bullets to see what they have for load data. Also, this is the most important; check the face of your bolt for pitting. I can't get into specifics but I have 4 years of dealing with M4 parts ordering and leaky primer pockets can cause pitting. Your primers being blown out will have caused your bolt to see direct gas pressure it was not designed to endure. Clean the bolt face thoroughly and then use a blue led flashlight to see and cracks or pitting.

Wow just seen this I been loading around 2500 rounds of .223 55gr hornaday vmax w 26gr ar comp and had 5 primers blow out but that may have been a problem I did with taking the crimp out, but I see no overpressure signs like that or of any kind
@uraniumpenetrator38445 жыл бұрын
4 causes. 1. Over pressure load. 2. The casing head has worn out from repeated loading and firing. 3. Defective brass. 4. Rarest of all, an out of spec chamber. Tossing the casing usually remedies the problem.

I'm glad that nothing happened to you out there. Once again You showed Responsibility and Gave out Clear and understood "Warning" at the first of the video. I have no Idea why those bullets blew up your brass, I was thinking Maybe it was bearing surface tension as the bullet may have resisted in it's travel down the Barrel, Or you have a Carbine length Gas tube, Both pointing at The AR comp boosting higher pressure, (The more the resistance, The More the powder burns So the more pressure is generated) That was what I was thinking at first, However you also pointed out the 80 grain Bullets and AR comp from our trusted Hornady Manual So that Killed my theory on that.. I'm at a loss other than your Primer pockets are being cut too large.
@JohnnysReloadingBench8 жыл бұрын
The Barnes data says 18.8-20.9 for their 70gr copper bullet, so I think I just plain started out too high. I'm surprised I didn't do the same with TAC!

Johnny's Reloading Bench When I shot Service Rifle those Guys use to really throttle Those 80 grain Bullets at the 600 yard line, some Blew Primers, However all of them agreed on one thing, The brass was expendable and it was only shot once then thrown away because of the pressure they were shooting them. Me on the other hand stayed in the safe limits of charges with the 75 gr and 77 gr Hornady and Sierras, I shot as good as scores as them So I Never went any heaver in bullet weight. IMR-4895 and H-4895 was my Choice of powder at the 600 yard line. Anyway Try and Try again, also,, Think of all the fun you are having,, hehehe.. Dave.

Shocked me too ! I've been loading copper and even brass bullets a lot and I've never experienced anything like you did there and that wasn't even a hot load, or shouldn't have been. I'm loading 77 grain Sierra Tipped Match Kings up with 22.9 grains of AR Comp and they show no pressure signs at all. I load a LOT of Barnes TSX 62 grain solid copper bullets, Fort Scott Munitions Brass and Copper bullets and usually use the same powder charges as I use with like weight lead core bullets with no problems what so ever. I don't get it unless those are a LOT longer than most and as you said take up to much case volume. All of the bullets I mentioned have a lot of relief groves cut into them too and that may be the difference? I wish you would get ahold of some Fort Scott Munitions TOC bullets and do some tests with them. They don't expand at all but Tumble on Contact and they do it every time. Make horrible wound cavities too. They are not cheap, but not ridiculously high either.
@ditchdigger936 жыл бұрын
You proved the AR platform is a strong one anyway if that didn't do any damage to it. My Load for the 77 grain OTM is 22.2 of AR Comp and was one of your lightest loads in one of your videos. It is not a bit hot but proved to be very accurate in both of my AR' S. I love the Barn's Tac X solid copper bullets in 62 grain and push them pretty hard but you have to be careful with some of the solid copper and brass bullets that don't have the relief groves in them. I also load a lot of Fort Scott Munitions solid copper and brass 62 grain bullets. Fort Scott is only twenty miles from me so I buy them directly from them. They are manufactured on CNC equipment and are extremely pointed. They guarantee them to tumble twice in the first foot of any soft medium and I can't disprove that as of yet. Give them a try. Not cheap but not ridiculous priced either. They also sell loaded ammo so you could pick up a couple of boxes of bullets and also loaded ammo for a comparison which would be nice to see and interesting. I find them VERY accurate. I load them with Benchmark. Won't give the amount, but hot ! So no pressure signs at all. Like your videos.
@scw-di4cr4 жыл бұрын
I know this is an old video and an old thread -- but I have a pressure trace unit and I can tell you that because copper bullets are much lighter than lead and much longer as a result - by increasing your seating depth to get a reasonable COL you jacked up the pressure. The crimps could have played a small role, but I think seating depth and hardness of the copper (vs. Lead) to scribe the rifling caused your increases.

@ammoiscurrency570610 ай бұрын
The copper bullets are about 15% bigger then the lead ones and the maker has a DEEP and wide hollow point making the bullet take up even more space. Often this isnt a big issue BUT some powders can be more sensitive to it and its a HUGE issue.
@davidpeterson61478 жыл бұрын
sort your brass by manufacturer and date on the head stamp. This will greatly enhance your accuracy. There is a significant variance in the thickness of the rim and the webbing to bottom of the main case which affects how far off the lands the ogive of the bullet sits. This difference will change the POI of each round and the best way to minimize this is to sort your brass.

When lubricating the hull, do you not have to lubricate the inside of the neck?
@JohnnysReloadingBench8 жыл бұрын
That's....a complicated question. In general, the answer is no. Lubing the inside of the neck is not usually required, strictly speaking. It's a good thing to do, though. It makes the sizing operation much smoother. I usually lube the inside of every 10th case or so. The lube ends up on the expander and will keep things running smooth for a while.

The only way you would blow up a modern produced AR is by putting water in the barrel or some other material that would cause pressure to spike way beyond what the metal is meant to endure. Likely what is happening is the bullet is sitting very very close to the rifling causing excessive pressure.

Is trimming the crimp as good as swaging the crimp?
@JohnnysReloadingBench8 жыл бұрын
Yes it is, in my opinion. I am totally happy with the job that the RCBS Military Crimp Remover does. HOWEVER, if you use something like a primer pocket reamer to do the job, it can remove more brass than is necessary. That's bad. You don't want to end up with loose, sloppy primer pockets. I have the RCBS swaging kit for use on a press and I found it a very slow process. If I went back to swaging for some reason I would buy one of the Dillon or RCBS bench mounted units.

The controlled chaos is not a good round at all unless you like tracking animals with no blood trail. This is based from 7.62x39 with shoulder shots to hogs (BIG HOGS). The hogs ran like they were never hit. Absolutely zero blood on the ground. Im not bashing the round but this is a true test that i did on live Hogs. After the petals come off the base of the bullet exits like a FMJ. As far as .223 ive had good luck with 60gr Hornady interlocks. Did finally find a round out of my 7.62 that i like which is the 123 Hornady SST .310.

John, I just bought a used Magnetospeed V3 and I am having a lot of trouble getting the thing to work. I am shooting 57gr 223 and 115gr 30 cal lead cast bullets and I continue to receive error codes. I tried sensitivity levels 6 thru 9. What sensitivity level worked for you? And do you have any recommendations working with the v3?
@JohnnysReloadingBench8 жыл бұрын
I think you are using sensitivity levels that are too high. I made the same mistake in the beginning. The sensitivity levels are HUGE steps. The normal level 2 setting works on everything jacketed. For your 115gr lead you might have to go to a 3. I would try 2 first, though. The 57gr will probably need level 3 or 4. All of the levels 5-11 are useless for me so far. The most important thing is to set the bayonette height properly. Hopefully yours came with the measuring guide stick thing. I sometimes set mine even a little closer than the 1/4" measuring guide. Good luck! Feel free to hit me up with any other questions you've got.

I just remembered that the Nosler reloading guide says to always start with the minimum load when using the e-tip (full cooper bullet). a 69gr smk with ar-comp recipe is 23.2 and they state to start 10% lower than that. That would be 20.9gr. So, a full cooper, longer bullet set to lead core powder charge can be the issue. After seeing this video, I would start at 19.5 gr with this bullet.

At the 37 minute mark, when removing live primers. Do it safely, don't risk your hands. Run water in the cases then punch the live primers out. Steal your wifes Blow drier, and dry the cases out.

Delaware Devil how long do the cases need to sit with water in them before you can safely punch them out?

The turret does indeed tilt a bit. I have been meaning to measure it. I will be doing a proper review of my press in the near future and I will address it then.

"make it a decent defense cartridge"... It's only a widely used military cartridge for several decades but OK.
