Ross’ character was adopted, and it is mentioned/speculated that Shelby’s was as well. Max’s character could’ve been born with red hair because of a carrying gene (possibly through Adam’s character, just because it seems more plausible because of his skin tone and hair color), or he could also just be adopted like the other siblings. _I put way too much thought into this._
