What a weekend of Tumblehome! So thankful of all your efforts to share your Algonquin adventures through video, images and sound. I rely on what I can find here and my own experiences outdoors to motivate me to create artwork that is meaningful to me and other like-minded people. Keep on sharing what you do and all the best this 2022 season.

I just want to extend a sincere 'thank you' for sharing these experiences with myself and others. Even as someone who works in high-tech, I often feel i'm my own enemy by helping to cleave the divide even further between us and the natural world (something I hold to high value). Its people like yourself, Shawn, Attenborough, and the many others who remind us that we share this planet and its ecosystems - its not ours. 4 billion years of history, hardships, and the perseverance of life has given us a true gem, and we should be utmost careful to not cock it up. Thanks Jason.
@JasonIrwinTumblehome3 жыл бұрын
Thanks and yes, the situation seems dire at times. I find it hard to think about. We are all guilty of complicity to some degree. High tech will have to be part of the answer invariably.

I just subscribed to your channel from a link from Joe Robinet. I learned to paddle a canoe many years ago and am glad to see that you follow the older gold standard. Kneeling for better stability, and steering the lovely canoe without changing sides every few strokes. You know the strokes for the job. It's a joy to watch. I look forward to seeing many more of your trips. What a beautiful boat and thanks for sharing your family stories.

I put off watching this until I had a day where I needed it. Your videos and editing always deliver. The early morning gravel roads and access points mixed with anticipation - the "it's good to be here/back" sense of arriving after travelling a bit on the first lake on the first day - the serendipity of arriving at places slightly forgotten: all familiar feelings. I lost it at the chili macaroni bit! I enjoyed the personal reflections while portaging. What a gorgeous trip. RIP Gord.

Lovely. First week of October is when we usually get our first snow. Often stays until breakup in the spring. When we were canoeing on the shield in the late 50's and early 60's we never boiled the water except for tea. We all had a cup and reached over the side when we were thirsty. A different experience then. Love your videos.

As luck had it, I was visiting him at the same time he was re-aquiring the boat from the man he sold it to 35 yrs previous... he didn't need it really but wanted to keep it in the fam so he sold it to me for the same low fee he paid to get it back. The man who bought it all those yrs ago had gotten sick not long after buying it so the boat basically stayed in storage for all those years... the thing looked like it had just been built when I got it!

Thanks. Yeah that tree was pretty cool!... I just let that shot ride and the Go Pro did a good job of keeping it steady (that time anyway)

If a freak accident happened and you knocked a hole in your super cool wooden canoe...how do you plug a hole in a wooden canoe? (innocent question from a guy that knows next to nothing about a canoe) Love your videos!
@JasonIrwinTumblehome6 жыл бұрын
The canoe is cedar strip but has a fiberglass shell so its reasonably tough. That being said, it certainly can suffer a puncture so I bring along some duct tape just in case. Its amazing what can be done to temporarily repair a canoe with duct tape!

Tumblehome pine pitch hardens like concrete and repairs any hole

a very cool spot. thanks for taking the time to do the filming and photography. I have a question. Do you attach everything to the canoe in case it tips over? Like the big pack?
@JasonIrwinTumblehome4 жыл бұрын
good question... I do sometimes clip in the pack but often not... out of laziness really. If I did tip, my guess is the pack wouldn't sink as there are multiple sealed dry bags in it... it may partially submerge but I think it would still float. I should give that theory a test!

@@sbellosa Yeah things are still pretty nutty in the US... not surprised the border is shut. Unfortunate. We have weathered Covid pretty well but are seeing some small flare ups in most provinces now. I think we will have a second wave this fall / winter.

@@JasonIrwinTumblehome Growing up we had a cottage east of Stroud on Lk Simcoe. We loved that lake that was 70 years ago. I can’t believe how much it’s changed down there. 😳. But my favourite place was living north on Lk Superior. Rivers all over and the fishing was amazing. The wife and l were on the water every chance we got. What great memories. Now we are on Lk Huron it’s ok but it’s not like Superior. My wife is from Wiarton that’s why we are here. 🙄 cheers 👍🇨🇦

I have a couple of questions, just curiosity really. It looks like you ditched your flint for a lighter, it looks like you had a big fire at some point and it looks like you reverted to store bought meals instead of home dehydrated ones. I'm guessing, short trip, convenience and a cold night?
@JasonIrwinTumblehome6 жыл бұрын
Yeah... I did do a striker fire on that trip but I enjoy the ease of a Bic. And yes I went with purchased meals that time as I didn't have time to do dehydrating prior. The jerky was done at home though... I always make time for that! I had a medium fire on the one one cool night. Sometimes I'll get it raging for a bit to make for some nice light on time-lapse pics too.
@missinipemagic89516 жыл бұрын
No worries, hopefully didn't come across as judgemental, just me being observant. I make my own jerky, dehydrate my own meals and use a flint when I can but I'll also take store bought meals, use a lighter and have a good fire on occasions.
