Hi Jon....yea that canoe was mine. I ended up hiking back to Hap’s the following day and was lucky enough to get a float plane out. It was quite the mis-adventure!

Aw no way... so sorry Brad ☹ Glad you're ok, but that is a tough loss. When did it happen? Pretty epic story, finding rescue at Hap's cabin of all places
@bradfenton
@bradfenton 2 жыл бұрын
@@LostLakes It happened near the beginning of June of this year. I ran into Hap 2 days prior. He was loading supplies into his canoe to bring back to the cabin that a float plane had dropped off. I offered to help him for a couple of hrs and in turn he invited me to join him for a bourbon or two later on. We had some great conversations. I camped out at Bridal Veil Falls and left the site the following day and that is when I sacrificed my canoe to the river Gods. After the canoe incident happened I made a make shift camp for the night, gathered my thoughts and came up with a plan to hike back to the cabin the next day - which was certainly a challenge. I knew from the previous conversation with Hap that he had clients coming in on a float plane in a couple of days time. I borrowed on of his canoes to retrieve my gear I had stashed away near the disaster site. I was able to hitch a ride back to Temagami the next day with much appreciation! So all in all, I learned a valuable lesson and had a great adventure!

Just incredible adventures! I really enjoy your educational tips along the way and love to see what you pack for food! I am new to the backcountry world but am getting more and more transfixed with the serenity of not having the covid now all of sudden paddlers around to make messes and leave garbage. It always makes my head shake when one paddles with loud music blaring..why are they even out there!!! I also will adopt your analysis on anger as I tend to like you say "let the anger be the master" I am interested on who you were quoting was it Frued? Thanks again for the outstanding scenery, adventure and lessons you offer!! Cheers!

Just watched this video with my wife. Amazing camera work, great story telling, and humour. You have made an enduring document of the joys of backcountry canoeing. The shots of spider's webs, toads, butterflies, chipmunks, and of course fish. You also captured the moods of the weather, especially the rain storm. I really loved the ways you captured the light, and mixed up camera position, for example, the underwater photography,. I also loved your rant about slob campers, as I can never figure out, why people can portage full stuff in and not take empties out. What a wonderful and instructive video. Thank you.

This is the "Shawshank Redemption" of canoe tripping videos on KZbin!! I laughed, I cried, and I clenched my seat with my buttcheeks so hard with the rapids sections that I have hemorrhoid's now! Seriously, I've been binge watching these kind of videos for weeks now, as part of my research to finally make the transition form front country, to backcountry camping at the ripe old age of 54. People like Kevin Callan and Jason Eke have become my "wilderness heroes", and now you are too! I have to say your videos are the best, and I've been earning a living in animation and video production for 25 years now. Thanks so much for all your efforts, cheers!

*PSA about Jeff's Map (the big one I was using) and maps for Temagami:* Jeff left the business years ago and yet his former partner will take the money for orders and ship out nothing. Do not order from that site. Jeff started a new map business called Unlostify, but they haven't recreated the Temagami map yet. Digital copies of the old Temagami map are still available for free. They're posted in the Ontario Backcountry Camping Facebook group under "Files": facebook.com/groups/822052151232319/files *Ottertooth* has great free digital maps for Temagami including Donald Lake: www.ottertooth.com/Temagami/Sites/chiniguchi.htm Just click on the map for the larger scale portions. Or if you want a beautiful wall piece and to support *Friends of Temagami,* they offer an overview map: www.friendsoftemagami.org/store/temagami-adventure-planning-map *Hap Wilson also has a guidebook to Temagami*

I grew up in Temagami... And the areas that you were travelling, the fishing has always been terrible. In fact, a lot of the area’s fishing isn’t that great, unless you’re fishing one of the bigger, stocked lakes... Very nice to watch this video. I’ve done those routes plenty of times while growing up. But it’s been almost 10 years since I’ve been back home, excellent to see you do it!

I'm a new subscriber. I relate to the sensitivity of your reflections. I am here more for the land than the fishing since I no longer fish on my canoe bush squats. I am 72 years of age. I did a 7 day solo paddle in the Lady Evelyn area in 1995. Now I just paddle locally by bike and hike access. I set up a base camp for bushwhacking and beachcombing and writing. Doing much less of paddling. My age is trying to tell me to slow down but not give up yet.

I’m not sure if someone has mentioned this, or if you were able to determine what the gnawing sound was when you were on Sugar Lake, but it was more than likely a pine bark beetle. It looked like you were surrounded by red pine, and the beetles are incredibly loud, so a good chance that’s it.

Dont know if you are aware of this, silica gel packs can only absorb a certain amount of moisture then they stop working. Good news is they can be reused. After you have collected a good amount put them in the oven in a pie plate at approximately 200 F and leave them for about an hour or so. This removes the moisture contents and the packs are ready to reused. I. Worked in a paper mill for 28 years and we used the silica gel to figure out the amount of moisture in the paper. The only difference was the silica gel at the mill was not in packs but in a large bowl so we could tell by the change in colour if they needed to be dehydrated. I have collected roughly 30 packs at home and have been reusing them for quite a few years now. WORD OF CAUTION, do not set your oven too hot to the point of melting the plastic bags or setting the paper bags on fire. Low and slow is the hey.. I am really enjoying your videos and find you have a real keen eye for making videos for example the spider and the butterfly and so on. Keep up the great work for this old guy that is too old to enjoy the wilderness like you do now.

One of your better trips Jon. Your videography continues to improve. I was wondering why you now favor kayak style paddles over your single paddle? Also, do you bring spares of any essential equipment such as an extra tarp? One thing I've noticed with your meals is that you go heavy on carbs and not so much proteins and fat it seems? Oh by the way, glad to see you're a LOTR fan...you do an excellent Gollum...I'm assuming your Amok is your 'precious' 😉 Thanks for doing these trips. I understand what you get out of them. And now that I'm too old to do this anymore, I can also vicariously relive my travels. Cheers.

Really appreciate that Alex! Only started with the double blade last fall but it's been a game-changer. I have a chronic wrist problem and the inherent twisting of the wrist of a correction stroke with a single blade was a constant source of pain for me. And my average paddling speed is much faster with the double blade so it's win-win. I can rarely afford the weight/bulk of spares so it's more so just accepting that I could have to cut a trip short or improvise if something happens, but over many hundreds of days of doing this I still haven't had any major issues :) And you're right about my diet out there...lotta room for improvement lol

Yay! So happy to see those blueberries about 30 minutes in. My first canoe trip, more than 50 years ago, as a kid at camp, was in Temagami. And one of my fondest memories was winning our blueberry pancake contest there - a perfect flip, of a perfect golden pancake. And so, years later, whenever I made my kids pancakes at home, I would execute a flip out of the pan. And occasionally, it did not end up a mess on the floor. Ah, magical Temagami…and those blueberries.

I had to chuckle at your comment of manitoba being light years ahead of ontario with the barbless hooks. Being a manitoban i rarely do canoe trips in manitoba because we are only allowed to camp on designated camp sites and only have fires in approved steel fire pits. It makes for messy camp sites and bears know all too well which sites to visit. It also makes it hard to plan a route and find out there are no available camp sites in the lake left. Ontario is nicer in that you can camp where you want and make a fire pit. Makes for better exploring and tripping options so that is where i go and still fish barbless too. Great trip John i enjoyed watching it.

Fantastic work John. You always seem to outdo yourself on these trips and I can tell your skills are getting better and better. Really enjoyed the second loon shot. They are extraordinarily beautiful birds if you get a chance to see them up close. p.s. The psycho tent shots had me rolling man...very funny stuff lol. A character indeed.

Well that was a nice way to start a Sunday chill day. Very cool video Jon. That is such a beautiful loop. It was like déjà vu watching this. That moose shot was impressive. Also really liked the spider weaving it’s web. Love the macro stuff. Really well done with lots of humour thrown in. Side note - maybe you have already tried these but we started using these Nuun tablets for electrolyte replacement. They’ve been a game changer for us on hot high output days. Keep up the great work. Looking forward to what you guys have planned this canoe season!

Your content is truly amazing man, keep up the good work and your channel is going to be huge one day. You're my new favorite channel, I really love how you mix a serious/self-posessed tone and beautiful cinematography with a carefree, happy quality. The detail in your videos is amazing and I wouldn't mind if they were even longer. It's so nice to just sit down at the end of a stressful day and unwind watching your videos. I do quite a bit of camping/backpacking but it really inspires me to get out there even more, and you're making me seriously consider getting a canoe... so glad I found your channel, keep going!!

Great video! I did a temagami trip this summer with 3 friends down the south channel of lady Evelyn river so there were some familiar amazing spots. We actually got to stop and chat with Hap and Andrea at the cabin falls. Your homemade cocktail made me chuckle. We actually created our own coctail at the campsite at bridle veil falls and appropriately named it “the bridle veil”. Kraken dark rum and lemonde from powdered lemonade packets. Once we ran out of rum, scotch was the backup.

The sound you heard near the end was pine beetles chewing the dead fallen trees. I hear that all the time. They are burrowed into the wood.

I probably posted this before, but the mystery gnawing sound you hear in the pine forest is pine beetle grubs. The bane of pine forests everywhere! They’re pretty hideous too. Really bums me out how much damage they have done. Riding the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route I saw entire mountain ranges covered in dead pine trees. Total bummer! Happy trails. On a happier note, we get a real kick out of your LOTR reenactment! The stuck in the hammock bit cracks us up too!

Man, the LotR bit made me crack up, that was so good! A word of advice from someone trained in the field: The rice does nothing. It is a good idea to let an electronic device completely dry after it's been wet, because powering it on can definitely cause something to short out. But once it's dry, you still aren't out of the woods. The real issue is, when water dries up, only the _water_ dries up. All the contaminants that were in the water get left behind. Those can, and usually do, cause corrosion. Devices like that have a lot of very small metal parts in the circuitry; traces, solder points, and other tiny metal pieces. It doesn't take much at all for any of that to corrode away after it's been wet. Then the device dies. Rice doesn't do anything. Sure rice is absorbent when you place it in water, but it simply doesn't have that kind of power to pull water out of electronics. The silica packs can help if the water is evaporating off the device, but those too won't pull water out. Time, and then a full teardown and proper cleaning by someone who knows what they're doing is what needs to happen.

Thanks very much for this! It happened with a previous camera years ago and it worked for years afterward....until the worst time. Started bugging out on a 14-day trip. I'm sure this one is on the same path at this point, but I'll ride it out for as long as I can
@Brunnen_Gee
@Brunnen_Gee 2 жыл бұрын
@@LostLakes Yeah, that's usually what happens. Someone does the rice thing, the device works for a while (when it was simply evaporation that did the work), they think the rice fixed it. The myth gets passed on. But eventually the device dies, usually long enough that they've forgotten that it got wet, so they don't put two and two together and realize that it was the water damage that did it. That corrosion had already started. Sometimes it'll ruin the device fast, sometimes it's slow and will take a year or more. But that's usually what happens. The device getting wet, then not being cleaned properly, did it in. The rice never fixed anything.

I was rewatching this video the a few days back. It is the first LL that had watched. I got to LL probably thanks to utube's algorithm. As way to get out during pandemic I started watching camping vids. I was frequently watching the SUV/RVing channel which sent me to J.Barbour's abandoned canoe recovery vid. On lark i searched Temagami as it was an area I'd dreamed of and CA was still off limits. A great intro to your channel. I quickly followed with the Puk and, 6th GL. I recently semi retired from henry ford hospital in motown. I'm only going in 3days a month, so i hoping i may still get a chance to see in person. Provided it's spared by the crazy early fire season. I hope that you're continuing to heal well. FYI I tried posting this earlier but, i somehow jacked it up trying edit in my OCD way. Sorry if you're seeing this twice and, i promise to not edit ever again, lol ps FF:Shore was amazing Cheers

You my friend are officially weird! And I appreciate weird. I would echo the sentiments of others that you should try harder to monetize your channel with patreon or a different platform. Your content is special, less special without Erin, but special! I’ve done 9 days in woodland caribou as my maiden voyage into canoe camping and plan to make another trip, this time with my teenage son, two summers from now.
