I found a mold for bug bodies that works great. It is online from Cake Connections -it's a silicone mold for gelatin bugs, I have made about 6 so far and it holds up very well . 11.99

In the studio on regular stained glass panels, we most often use 1/4" foil and then when doing more detailed work we' sometimes switch to 7/32" foil. We have many sizes on hand but those are our most common. 😎😀😎

Yes we clean off the glass before foiling. This is mostly because we grind the glass and need to remove the powdered glass from the pieces.

Just standard window cleaner seems to work well, wax might make them prettier.

CAN YOU SHOW HOW YOU MADE THE PLASTER OF PARIS MOLD. HOW LONG DID YOU LEAVE THE BODY IN MOLD, OR HOW LONG DID PLASTER HAVE TO SET UP BEFORE PUTTING BODIES IN MOLD

I didn't film the process. The packaging the plaster of paris came in had instructions and I just followed them. I did let the molds cure for a week or more before making bodies of solder. Good Luck!

Loved your video so I gave it a try. I'm having a little trouble getting the original casting out of the mold. Did you coat it in oil or anything to remove it easier? Or how long did you leave the casting in the Plaster of Paris before you tried to remove it? I think I may need a video of you making the molds.

You might try soldering a piece of wire to the back of the insect body. Once it cools you should be able to pull it free. My molds have been used often, so there is usually some flux and debris at the bottom of them so nothing can stick to them. I'd love to hear how this works for you.

How do you clean it when its so fragile? I struggle to be gentle and get all the flux off

It depends on the size. If it's small, you can wash it in the sink using dawn dish washing liquid. If it's larger it probably isn't so delicate.

We use CJ's Flux cleaner and kwik clean spray. Some times we use water and cleanser.

I have a question, I hope you see my question because your video is 2 yrs. old. If we made our own bodies, we could add wire in the bodies. The wire would be horizontal to the body. We could tie into the wings with the wire for stability and strength. What do you think?

Yes. I did a sculpture with a butterfly escaping from a hand and made the soldered body around an exiting piece of steel that was bent enough that the body couldn't move or pull off. It worked great!

@Gomm Stained Glass Can you tell me the clay I should use to make the body mold. I read that if the clay has moisture in it, it will explode when you fill it with the solder. Thank you for your help. Sorry to be such a pain. Big fan from Washington State 😃🌲🌲🌲🦀

I did look up lead free dragonfly mold but they only showed an already made body but not the mold I did see a silicone mold Do you know if solder can be poured into silicone? Thank you for helping Patricia

I couldn't find a mold either so those instructions are for how you can make your own mold and then be able to make many more insect body copies!
