Couple of additional tips for beginners w/routers: - rotate yourself around the cut so your line is never blindsided by the bit or router housing. Always have visibility of the line - for full depth cutting, splurge on a fresh (quality) bit - for a safer plunge start, drill a starting point (aka hole)!with a forstner bit. - if you F up, make a new/larger key. This is where Jonathan‘s asymmetric key design makes this forgiving - have fun with it - most important tip! And for you more advanced carvers - it’s fun to make a leaf shape key (instead of a butterfly) so that long crack has the appearance of a vine. I’ve also done keys that make the crack have appearance of barbed wire.

Thanks for the great video. I have a question - since you design your butterfly inserts in Fusion and use a CNC machine to create them, why don't you design the corners of the inserts to have a radius matching the router bit, rather than a sharp corner? It seems as if it might save some chiseling time. This coming from a non-woodworker.
@katzmosestools4 жыл бұрын
Because that sharp corner looks so much better and handcut.

@richbradley21644 жыл бұрын
@@katzmosestools yeah i was thinking that. Again maybe best of both worlds since you have standard CNC sized keys would be to make a router template that does all EXCEPT the very corners. then you just have 4 corners to clean rather than all the sides too.

Why not use a template and a inlay bushing on a router? Same result far less time.
