Love your video Tobias! Really well done! I have 6 butterfly Koi now , still working on my second pond build for them. I think the people into buying really expensive Koi from Japan don’t realize we can get equally beautiful koi from the US and Israel breeders! Butterfly Koi are exactly that, koi but more beautiful because of those spectacular long fins! 🥰❤️

butterfly koi originated in Taiwan, japan failed for the process of regular koi's mutation, but regular koi mutated in Taiwan's environment and becomes butterfly koi, the first successful reproduction of butterfly koi was in Taiwan in the year 2006. In Mandarin, the name is actually Dragon-Pheonix koi.

Indonesian successful breed the butterfly koi at 1970's. So butterfly koi still originated from Taiwan?

even if standard koi were domesticated from a different species, i dont see how that would make butterfly koi "not koi" just because the longtail gene would have been introduced from a hybridization. you dont see people running around saying cat breeds like savannahs and bengals aren't actually domestic cats just because the breeds were founded with hybrids between domestic cats and other feline species. most savannah cats and bengals are very distantly related to their f1 hybrid ancestors, and only resemble their wildcat family members in the fact that both have rosettes and spots, but nobody's running around cat fancier associations and cat shows discoursing that they arent really domesticated cats. it should be the same with butterfly koi. if standard koi were domesticated from the same species of carp than the one that introduced the longtail gene at places like blue ridge, then there should be no problem since theyre the same species. if standard koi and the carp that introduced the longtail gene were different species, hypothetical hybrid butterfly koi have been bred with standard koi for so long that any undesirable hybrid traits have been bred out and the longtail gene remains, making them just as much koi as bengals are domestic cats

They are like the ones mentioned in the myths which would turn into a dragon
@morphergaming0531 Жыл бұрын
They all originate from carp so they are all koi. Differentiating them as not koi is like saying a Chow, Malinois, or Irish Wolfhounds aren't dogs because the weren't breed from the same dogs genetics of the most dog country. While I wholly respect Japan's commitment to advancing the genetics of koi they need to get over it, and by the way many of their have gotten over and are producing long fins.

Great video.. May I ask, what is the best substrate we can use for koi fish in a aquarium? I have 7 koi fish in a aquarium size 4x2x2 (feet), and as for now my floor is empty.. Planning to add some substrate but not sure which is the best for koi fish
@TobiasHolenstein4 жыл бұрын
So I think larger stones will be good, like maybe some river pebbles or river rock. I would stay away from smaller gravel or pebbles because from what I have read online, they can be a choking hazard for the fish. I calculated your aquarium water volume and its about 119 gallons. Try to check your parameters as often as possible. I'm guessing this is probably a temporary setup for your koi fish and they are probably still very small right now, but from my experience they will outgrow it pretty quick

@@pradippaul771 So the thing is a lot of people will say that you can not because when you have a long bodied fish like a butterfly koi and a short bodied fish like a fancy goldfish, the long bodied fish will outcompete the short bodied fish for food and the fancy goldfish may not get enough food

Good question! Yes regular koi and butterfly can breed, as for what you will get, I'm not 100%, but I think it is possible to get a variety of regular koi and butterfly koi

@@TobiasHolenstein - I hear you can cross-breed Koi and goldfish (or Shubunkin), too, but they are sterile and cannot breed afterwards. I don't think that's the case with reg Koi and Butterfly Koi however.

To be honest I’d say koi are most closely related to mirror and common carp in Europe they are the main fish in most lakes and my local lake that I fish on has koi in it and they are no diffirent whatsoever to mirrors or commons apart from colour

i thought "koi" is just the japanese word for karp :D
@bangxuevang76833 жыл бұрын
It is believed that the term “koi” came from the Japanese word “goi”. Koi can be more formally called nishikigoi. In Japan, the “common brown carp” is called “magoi”. When breeding these koi. Breeders will use other breeder’s koi as spawning parents or “oyagoi”. Some breeders such as Matsunoske have included magoi into his nishikigoi bloodline to achievement darker rich sumi(black) our of his gosanke. Other terms such as tategoi can be used as “future koi”.
