I feel like my Grammaw made a similar pie. But, she called it a custard pie. Also, those little multicolored bowls look like Fiesta Ware. It was made in Newell, West Virginia from 1936 to 1973. And from 1985 to present. It's quite collectable....Not at all relevant to the video, but a little piece to Appalachian history lol. Thank you for all your hard work with these videos!

My grandmother swore by a meal of buttermilk and cornbread, all crumbled up and in a tall glass. She often used a quart Mason jar even though it was only about half full. Sometimes she made it sweet and sometimes she didn’t. She said it was her favorite when she was feeling peckish.
@clarencegreen3071

"peckish" . . . I'm as Appalachian as you can get but have never heard that word. We need a definition. I'm a big fan of buttermilk in biscuits, cornbread, and dumplings or over cornbread in a glass. Color me purple but I like the modern cultured buttermilk. I enjoy these videos and the comments. Thanks, Everybody!

It's so refreshing when you share precious stories about things in your home or life, such as the colorful ramekins for oatmeal that your mother gave you. Nice memories!

I had never heard of buttermilk pie until college when one of my suite mates mentioned missing his grandmother’s cooking. There was no Internet in the ‘60’s, but a trip to the cookbook collection in the Home Economic department’s library produced a couple of versions. I think it is more flavorful than the standard custard pie; we prefer a little ground allspice to nutmeg. Those colorful little dishes are indeed a treasure. Again, your daughters are perfectly lovely.

I have to let you know how much I enjoy your channel, for several reasons. I am a 76 year old grammy that has lived alone since 2001 when my husband and I were divorced. I'm a Catholic so, once united by God in marriage UNTIL death takes one of us, we are married. Of course he's furious and says it's all garbage but he'll find out when he dies but I for one, accept it. So I started to live alone, the thought came to me also about the history of the foods I cook and how to pass that on for my grandchildren. I have 2 grandsons now and they might not be bakers but I have written down as many of my recipes as have made over the years with a history of how that item came about and how I changed it over the years. This is why I enjoy your channel so much, you got the same idea and are doing it on youTube. Your stories are wonderful and will be a TREASURE for your children when they stop knowing it all.... around 40!

So, tonight I got the frozen blueberries from the freezer to make my smoothie (that keeps me from eating ice cream) and I’m OUT of unsweetened vanilla almond milk.😩😩😩 And the sweet milk is about gone and I haven’t given the cat her nightly bowl of warm milk so l can’t use the sweet milk. So...I was FORCED to use buttermilk to make the smoothie. It’s the best smoothie ever!!! All’s well that ends well.🌟🌟🌟

I love your recipes. I used to be a chef but it was not until I was out of the professional kitchen and chaos that I felt real cooking and baking, for me, began. Most every recipe that I use I tweak and alter with the exception of yours (so far just this one) and when I find Amish recipes. Simple, good food. Thank you for sharing! I have not scoured your blog completely yet - by the by, that would be a great name for a pub - but if you have not done lemon recipes (bread, cookies, cake, etc.) please do! Since the heat hit I have been craving lemon.

My Granny would make a sweet bread very similar to this, except she didn't split the batter, it baked in a single iron skillet and made a thicker cake. My favorite way to eat it was warm from the oven with butter. And yes, we called those knives "case knives" as well. I enjoy your videos so much; they trigger so many happy memories and help me recreate many of the wonderful foods my Granny used to cook that I didn't think to write down while she was still with us. Keep up the good work; you're helping many of us keep our own family traditions alive by sharing yours with us. God bless you, always in all ways.

For the best buttermilk, buy two one-half cartons of sweet milk. One will be your sweet milk. The other one will be buttermilk. Remove one cup of the carton and exchange it with a cup of fresh buttermilk and tighten lid and shake to fully blended. Place in warm area over night (back porch or stoop). Next morning you have buttermilk. Now refrigerate. Never buy buttermilk again.
