I think that the combination of his lifestyle and fame changes after the success of the show, coupled with the resoundingly negative reaction to many details about the story's finale, put a serious damper on his motivation. He went from someone who had a really good series with an ending still to finish to someone who now has to match or exceed the quality of something that was once beloved but then came to be rejected. That's gotta be tough but he's got no one to blame but himself.

When people are disappointing with HBO’s Game of Thrones season 8 but honestly, I knew it was going to end badly because George R. R. Martin couldn't even conclude his own story. This is what Trey and Matt have been trying to tell us. HBO can't even wait for the guy to finish his books, so they just make things up for the sake of ending the series. Game of Thrones is all the build up but no pay off.

He would put out the books online, a chapter at a time, before ever publishing them because he was working on the series. I never found Game Of Thrones interesting. It just seemed like a porn parody of Lord Of The Rings. It seems like it was just a socially acceptable (and "sophisticated") way to gawk at naked people.
