At some point in the early 00's a consensus was reached among manufacturers to standardize memory cards that held information like patches & pre-sets for keyboards, synths, rack gear etc. as previously they were all proprietary & each brand had it's own unique kind (like old cell phone chargers that weren't interchangeable), which became more & more of a logistical nightmare. When they initally made the change, "jumbo SD" cards were chosen to be the universal system since they had the biggest memory capacity for their size at the time, as USB drives were still in their infancy & could only hold a few KB's at best, while SD's had MB's of memory... Obviously within a few years moore's law did what it does as the capacity on USBs increased exponentialy fast & proved to be the superior format everyone uses today

At some point in the early 00s, manufacturers agreed to standardize the memory cards used to hold patches & pre-sets for keyboards, synths, rack gear etc. as previously each brand had its' own unique proprietary system that wasn't compatible with other devices (like old cell phone chargers) & it was becoming more & more of a logistical nightmare for techs & performers. So when they went ahead with the change "Jumbo SD" cards were the chosen medium as USB drives were still in their infancy & could only hold a few KBs, whereas SD cards had MBs of storage. Didn't last long obviously, as moore's law did its' thing & within a couple years USB drives proved to be the superior technology
