1. I was there. It was one of my top 3 concert experiences (hint: #1 was another Ayreon concert). 2. Arjen is a fantastic composer. He's meticulous as hell, and it is reflected in the final product. 3. Damien is a beautiful singer, and a really nice guy. 4. I really appreciate your reaction. It was detailed, and covered not just the vocals, but also the composition. Very nice. I'll watch more of your stuff.

Damians voice just gives me full body goosebumps in this song. His full power high notes at the end are insane. I believe its just a half step lower than Floors floorgasm note in GLS. I mean, look at him, who would ever think that could come out of him? You know you did well when the crowd chants your name after you sing, and he was filling in for the original singer, its not even his song!

Damian Wilson must have the most consistent microphone handling ever. I know know nothing about singing, but I know physics. He is so specific and precise in adjusting the distance and angle of the microphone from his mouth. He has this butter smooth voice, but the microphone handling must play a large part in why his volume levels are also smooth and controlled too, and why there are no unwanted noises and pops disrupting the butterness. I bet that he does not even think about the microphone anymore, the physical position is just a part of the note that he wants to sing. I have seen many singers make adjustments especially on loud high notes, but no one this precise and specific.
@thatone94623 жыл бұрын
Yeah when he moves the mic to the sides its to avoid the pops and when he pushes the mic back he does that to not overload the mic and the sound to come bad
@RolandDeschain13 жыл бұрын
Good mic technique is very under-rated. One of the greatest power singers ever is Australia's John Farnham. His mic technique is superb.

I know this is a little late Jessica, but I wanted to add to your drum sound comment. Ed the drummer is using lightening rod sticks instead of solid drum sticks. They are a collection of multiple thin wooden dowells/sticks bound together but with a small degree of flexible movement. They soften the attack or blow on the drum skin and having played next to them, also lead to a lengthened decay or sustained drum sound, at least to my ears. The tom drum sound here sounds a little conga-like which I think good quality toms tend to do. Anyhow enough rambling, I adore your enthusiasm and your contributions. Hancrafty7

Hey Jess, I hope you're doing well. The combination of the rhythic bass line and the "vocal/musical resolutions in odd directions" (often minor-to-major, not resolving into the key I would expect) reminds of a musical phenomena called a Shepards filter, which gives a constant/perpetual rising or falling affect in the music by very clever manipulation of a LFO on a phaser or flanger. Now, now of this is being employed in this song, but the constant tension/resolution yields a similar feel, to me. Cello playing the funk 'bass filter' line. Stevie Wonder would be proud of this band. The envelope filter isn't heard often enough, and attacking the amplitude-sensitive filter with a cello-bow is, literally, a stroke of genius. Drums playing softly - this is Ed Warby at his best... no one matches their playing to the needs of the song better than Mr Warby does. The world needs more percussionists like Ed Warby. I don't know if height has anything to do with amazing voices, but Damon Wilson is about 6foot5 and he looks like he lifts double-malt-scotch aging casks for a living... those arms don't come from lifting a microphone. Jess, I love our videos and analysis. You educate me, and I appreciate that. I hadn't picked out the tri-tone, but I should have recognized it by the discomfort it was causing. Props to Arjen for making such good use of it in the song. Have you formed that metal band yet?...

He’s an absolute legend, great guy if you ever get chance to meet him and his career is varied and interesting. From Threshold, Ayreon and Star One (both Arjen Lucassen works), his solo career with acoustic guitar, strings and quite folky to the fact that he played Jean Val Jean in London for a year. What a dude!

From this same Electric Castle concert, you HAVE to hear the exquisite voice of Marcela Bovio (center female in the chorus) doing the short, high energy Stream of Passion song, "Out in the Real World". Stream of Passion was a band that Arjen created with Marcela that featured, as is frequently the case, several Ayreon regulars.

Amira’s voice has matured each year since that fist performance & the more you react to her, the more of her amazing journey will unfold. Since that first performance, Amira engaged a vocal coach & has performed in some 20 countries & sung in at least five languages, many of her performances have been to a packed auditorium & accompanied by a full orchestra with back up singers & choirs. Too bad you never hear his music on the radio or see his opera's on television. You only hear music that sells, so money money money rules the tv and radio stations, not music.
