I added a winter quilt to my bed night before last, here in NH. I love this time of year. A friend of mine made me far more aware of seasonal changes. She said, `There are not actually 4 seasons. The weather changes every 6 weeks`. Over the years I have paid attention, and I have found her to be right.

Morning chill doesn't start until sometime in September here in lower Michigan. We've had a mostly mild summer with a lot of rain. Temps have been tolerable. Seeing all the comments from Texas, the South, and other places in extreme heat & drought only increases my want to get a piece of beautiful farmland here, where we have the soil, rain, and temps to grow a lot, especially with hoop houses. There's even a stand of Great Sequoia in Manistee County. I def want to go see them one day!

One of my favorite winterization processes is going around to all the water troughs that have hoses in them and placing a jolly ball through the hose so that you can tell where the water line is at cuz if you can't see the ball anymore then your bucket needs water and you can use the jolly ball to break up the ice once the ice is formed One thing I have noticed is when we leave jolly balls in water drops the horses will actually break up the water with the jolly ball

You should consider mounting a remote controlled valve on that main water line (down at the pump site). It's not that expensive (likely around $100 for a decent quality one with phone app control) and would help a lot when you're hundreds of yards away on your upper pasture.

Watching this video made me think, Morgan, can you show us your tools? And, yes, your tractor is included in your tools. It seems like every time I see you work on something, there's a new tool I haven't seen before. There are just so many and such a huge variety!! I think it would be a great video for winter when you have most of your tools stored. If you could also show us a brief clip of what you did with it (and if you could give us a rough date as to when the video you show was posted it would be nice so we can watch it to see it in full use for a better idea of how it was used). I ask because my father is a mechanic and I've seen his tools, but so many of them are just larger/smaller versions of the same thing while yours seem so much more diverse. (Bone conduction headphones for the win!)

Morgan, I love your channel for many reasons: you entertain by showing us city folk what farm life can be. I appreciate your sharp wit, your modesty, your usual optimism even in the face of adversity, your values, your respect for all living things, and finally your video skills. The only reason I occasionally turn away from your videos is when you focus on topics that, to me, don't seem to have much to do with farming. Specifically, videos on your political and environmental causes seem, to me, to belong on a different channel. I find it hard these days to avoid political ads and news; actually, the stuff exhausts me. I enjoy coming to a channel like yours which for much - but not all - of the time entertains without preaching. Keep up the great work. Maybe try to reduce the number of political statements.

Hey Morgan! Have you thought about using biochar in the "bedding" of your birds? I read that it helps with bad odors plus it provides a surface where microorganisms can grow which will result in, when the material finally breaks down, you have a super substrate that will help retaining moisture and microbiology, improving the health of your soil. Perhaps you can use biochar in the winter poultry coop, but perhaps you can start small, using it in the bedding of your chickens as an experiment and see if is something usefull for you. edit: another benefits, is easy to make biochar, you could use all the wood and branch cuttings from the spring. You could give biochar to your pigs. It could be use for your wife garden. You can even sell it as substrate for the plant lovers.

In Florida we call it swampbutt. On a side note you can most likely get free wood chips from the city if you ask them to drop a load and you that to cover the veggie garden for the winter. Also if you have an area you're not particularly using nor think it'll be used much in the future you can give permission for them to dump wood chips instead of them taking it to the dump. We used to do something like this at my house. Overtime it breaks down into some nice rich soil.

The number of things a farmer needs to watch, build, know how to do, and squeeze into each day’s work is staggering. And that doesn’t count running a major KZbin channel and writing books. Considering where you started as an urban office worker and where you are now, the journey has been tremendous. And continuing. The loss of small family farms in this country is such a huge tragedy, not only for the families and communities, but for the living tradition of accumulated knowledge. You are doing your part in reversing this loss.

The humidity is what really gets me.. atleast I can stay out of the sun when it's hot but if there's high humidity there's no escaping the misery😵‍💫

@@anthonywashington2885 We would happily trade you for some of your rain, I cannot remember the last time it rained here. The leaves on some of the established trees are even curling up and drying out.

@@bukuroshja_shqiptare Thankfully we have had pretty low humidity. 32% right now. It will get lower. We just really need the rain so badly.

We had a week with highs in the 70s, then a week with highs in the upper 90s (heat index values pushing 120), and now we’ll be back down to the upper 70s for a week. It takes a few tries for season changes to “catch” around here in central Illinois.

Love the videos! My family here in California love watching your farm life. Hey, have you noticed one of your cameras has been recording with a black spot pretty much dead center of the recording? It’s super small but thought you might like to know. I hope it isn’t a dead spot on the lens. Anyway, love the videos and the farm!!
