The last 4 games show that Bellinham, Kane snd Foden can't play together. They keep occupying the same spces. I'd play Bellingham for Mainoo, Gordon for Foden, Palmer for Bellingham and Toney for Kane.

This is basically an obvious move to me. We can debate about the personnel... I think you have to get Saka in at left wing back though. If Trippier plays, he has to play right wing back... Then you can bring Shaw on in the last 30 with the aim of getting him ready to start a possible semi final. But Southgate just isn't going to do this despite it being a formation that made his career as England manager, as you said. Hes going to stick with the same formation that doesnt work for us but will bring in Konsa. He might outright drop Saka for Palmer.... But those are the only two changes I can see him making. Southgate is far too stubborn to accept defeat on this one. He thinks he can replicate England's second half performance from the 2022 quarter final v France (even though we lost). Ive been saying this since euros 2021 when we mixed up the formations.. this team is built for a back five under Southgate. Until we get a foreign coach who actually knows how to teach England how to play in the way that Southgate is failing to try and do right now, this team has to be like the Italy of the 1980s.

Still don't think the team will be cavalier enough to provide width. It relies on both wing backs providing width or there is no width and Bellingham and Foden will have at most 2 options with them against a back 5 with midfielders to battle with also. The back 5 like this requires the bravery to let both wingbacks fly and we're just not that free spirited. I want Gordon and Watkins to start. We are going to sit deep, we are going to play mostly on the break. So play the players who can exploit them on the counter more.

This is very close to how Palace play although Eze and Olise provide much more width and dribbling/wing play than Bellingham and Foden. Wharton would slot in for Mainoo (says my Palace supporting heart), but I know Southgate would never play him in the exact position that earned him the call up. He'd be a breath of fresh air, picking up the ball from the back three and feeding the wide men who will have Saka and Trent on the overload. Pipedreams. Just think if Mitchell had been selected, England could have had the entire Palace left hand side of Guehi, Mitchell, Wharton and Eze - no trouble there with connection and teamwork

Sorry, but this team has the same issues that Southgate's teams have had so far in the tournament. Namely, there is no pace up top! All 3 of them like to come to the ball, Kane needs runners to go past him, and who is Trent meant to pick out with his long passing when they are all coming towards him? 3 at back is the answer but not quite this system. Gareth got us to WC semis in 2018 in a 3-1-4-2 with less quality players, ppl forget tthis. So I would like to see some variation of this. Personally I would go to 3-2-4-1 First then if not working Drop the two pivots and have just 1 and bring another striker / Winger to partner Kane. Southgate will most likely resort to 5 at the back for security with Geuhi out. Let's not forget we've played 5 in friendlies/Nations league will little success. One thing I would say is as fans we are critical. England look poor because we don't create chances. Supporting a team that registers 1 shot and it comes in the 95th minute is tough to get excited about. We could flip the atmosphere by just generating more shots on target, get the crowds going. Don't forget we criticised our performance vs Slovenia, Denmark and Slovakia.... well Portugal were taken to penalties, Slovakia beat Belgium and Denmark were a toe away from taking the lead, without VAR the game could have been different. Certainly wasn't an easy game. We've played dogged teams and Switzerland will provide a real test, let's bring something to them.
