Following on from last week's Sweelinck Fantasia Chromatica, we move to the North German/Danish school of the 17th Century to Buxtehude, spiritual successor to Sweelinck and forerunner of JS Bach. This is a typical Præludium of its time with sections of free fantasia alternating with fugal writing. This is a piece for manuals only, although there is a longish pedal-point towards the end which is better played with simply a pedal coupler (and no stops) so as to free up the left hand to assist the right.
Listen for the fugue theme that bears more than a passing resemblance to "And he shall purify" from Messiah by Handel!
