Many, many thanks for presenting this superb concert of church music from the pre-Bach generation. I've always loved and enjoyed performing Buxtehude's inventive and emotive music - organ and choral. He's a great and refreshing joy to hear. And we can understand why Bach held him in such high esteem. If you haven't yet heard the "Alleluia" (final movement, built on a "ground bass"/basso ostinato) from his cantata "Der Herr ist mit mir" then you must! Thrilling! As always, the NBS excels in everything they do. 👍 ❤️ 🎶 🎶

One of the best performances of Buxtehude I've heard. The singers are excellent! the orchestra is excellent! Very musical, without being analytical and stuffy.

A magnificent concert, up to the usual high standards of the Netherland Bach Society. I'm going to listen to more of Buxtehude's music. I haven't paid much attention to him since college. This concert revealed fabulous riches.

I've read that Buxtehude was a hero and teacher of J.S. Bach. Now I understand. Magnificent music!

Buxtehude is still awaiting for his reconing. As if 400km Bach's covered by foot to meet and study with Master is not enough of a recomendation. A true sonic architect Buxtehude is an immense talent that is curiously underrepresented in Early Music curcuit. It has to change! Stunning mastrery and beauty of his compositions were obvious to Bach. What about us? Hopefully someone like Jos van Veldhoven will pick up the slack in equally compelling performance of this grandiose music.

...and subsequent to his pilgrimage, did not Bach write down every note the master performed? Or is this part just legend?

I've always loved Buxtehude's way of making music sweet yet powerful! As J. S. Bach's 'teacher' and father in law I can hear his influence on Bach's earlier works. I believe he carried D. Buxtehude's influence throughout his musical career....
@TheGloryofMusic6 жыл бұрын
Buxtehude was Bach's almost-father-in-law. Bach was offered a position on condition that he marry Buxtehude's daughter. Bach declined.

For me it is Bach and Handel. But I love Vivaldi and respect Buxtehude, especially considering how much influence Buxtehude had on Bach.
@openmusic39046 жыл бұрын
One thing is very clear from this, in terms of counterpoint and polyphony it is without a doubt that Bach drew great influence from Buxtehude. Where there seem to diverge is on harmony. Buxtehude's harmony is far simpler but arguably very expressive and lovely. Bach's harmony on the other hand is far more profound, intricate, complex, and full of tension and chromaticism.

@georggronauer69837 жыл бұрын
Willem de Fesch may be, because a lot of the Gelegenheitsmusik, lets say from Heinrich Schütz burned in Dresden when the ducal Palace went down by fire.On the other hand most of the secular music in that time was not written down.Remember, in that times music always has to be new,and was forgetten after a short period of time.Even Bachs music has been rediscovered by Mendelson in the 19.century and rearranged by him for proper performance for ears of his time.On theother hand, for god everybodIn that times does give his best.Quality overruns curiosity. And think: the marveles baroque operas take too long time for beeing presentetd in an mere evenng concert. They only work in proper surroundings as an operahouse.
