Hopefully I'll be relocating in a few month, then I'll work on getting the house protected with these items. Thank-you

Hi sorry it's off topic. I remember you said that a 2way radio is a good way to test a faraday. Do I need an expensive set or is there something cheap that would give a very strong signal? Any direction would be helpful . Thanks!
@disasterprepper
@disasterprepper 3 жыл бұрын
Actually, a 2-way radio is both good and bad to test a Faraday cage. The good news is that the frequency is in the right range. However, if you just use a set out of the box, it's way too powerful to block. It requires about 120 dB to block a good set of radios. I designed a Faraday cage tester that uses 2-way radios as the source and receiver, but it requires additional hardware. Check out kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpmQdJmGgt6Jh68.

I will be placing an order today for sure one question I have an indoor garden and I use ballast that run about between three and five amps well those ferrets work for those devices?
@disasterprepper
@disasterprepper 3 жыл бұрын
With a ballast (which just controls the levels of voltage and current typically to lights), you can use a broadband ferrite around the wire bundle. See disasterpreparer.com/product/emp-ferrites/. Just pick one that is large enough to go around the wire bundle.

I'll write this here because it's your latest video, the X class flare that went off the other day had a radio burst up to 750mhz, in 1 of your videos you stated solar type emp's from flares were low frequency, confined to the hf band!! Could you update us with faraday cage information for much higher frequencies please?
@disasterprepper
@disasterprepper 3 жыл бұрын
It's not solar flares that are necessarily low frequency. It is coronal mass ejections. Those are the solar events most likely to cause a large geomagnetic disturbance at the Earth's surface. Flares can cause their own issues, including hazards to those at high altitudes and radio interference.

I've got a question, my niece has a pacemaker, how will that be affected by an EMP or CMA, and is there anything I can do to prevent the danger to her? Thank you.
@disasterprepper
@disasterprepper 3 жыл бұрын
I did an analysis of a Medtronic pacemaker a couple of years ago, and it look like it would survive an EMP without damage. That was one particular unit, but it's promising.

How would we protect ourselves against a energy microwave weapon?

Would shipping to Switzerland be cost-effective given that you are US-based ? Thanks
@disasterprepper
@disasterprepper 3 жыл бұрын
It really depends on what you're interested in ordering. Usually, it's not terribly expensive to ship a small box of components, perhaps $30-$50 depending on the number of items.

@@disasterprepper Most likely ferrite beads and some gaskets for shielding boxes. Unfortunately, radios can't be imported w/o a ham license so I'll have to pass on your dB tester. Thanks for the reply !

I've been curious about various metalic paints. I see copper, aluminum and even the iron (paint for magnets to stick to). Have you tested these?
@disasterprepper
@disasterprepper 3 жыл бұрын
We tested about six of them a couple of years ago. Several did fairly well, offering anywhere from 20-40 of shielding, but some are very expensive to use for large projects.

@@disasterprepper Ah interesting. It was on my mind because Lowes was clearancing their magnetic primer (stuff you paint on to make a surface that magnets would stick to). When I picked up a quart can of the stuff I realized it weighed around 2-3 times what normal paint does so I thought "man this has a lot of iron in it". Did you by any chance test this kind of paint or any of the "aluminized" paints like Rustoleum or anything else that a person could just pick conveniently in their local hardware store? I queried your channel for paint and didn't see anything but if you have a video on it I'd like to check it out. Thanks.

@@NickFrom1228 The ones we tested were all specialty paints, not offered at Lowes or places like that. One brand I remember doing well is YShield HSF54 and MAX54.

While having a connection to the grid certainly causes greater risk, even disconnected items could be damaged. Anything with modern solid-state circuitry is susceptible to damage from an EMP.

@@adamgibbons8135 You can use any conductive material (copper or aluminum foil) to wrap a box. As long as you fully cover it, the box will give at least 50 dB of shielding (99.7%). That's enough for something inside to survive an EMP.
