The economic stimulus package includes a "Buy American" clause many U.S. industries lobbied for. Lesley Stahl reports that businesses that export overseas fear foreign governments will retaliate and keep U.S. products out of their market.

I'm an electrical engineer with Nucor, and your comment is completely ridiculous. You mention laziness as an attribute of a common American worker. I can only assume you've never been inside an actual steel mill, or you'd realize how off base that statement is. Secondly, saying we're uneducated is just ignorant. Everything there is automated, which means there is some highly technical machinery there. I've been there three years, and am just scratching the surface on what I need to know.

I feel for the outsourced american i really do.; however, the only way people can be better off in a society is with productivity. Since free trade can help deliver that productivity, we should promote a zero tariff policy,

This whole video was centered around questioning the validity of Dan Dimicco and pointing the finger at Nucor for trying to cause a global trade war when Nucor laid off zero workers during the recession and attempted to encourage American products and job growth in the United States industrial field. Lesley Stahl had a terrible tone in the interview and shed a poor light on Nucor who has worked hard to continue to be North Americas largest recycler of any material and employ 25,000 workers across the country. Now, why wouldn't Nucor and many other companies not want there to be support to buy American when the cheap quality Chinese steel which is inexpensive because of Chinese government subsidies which the US government would never have thought about doing for their own steel industry who struggled through a crisis caused by housing. Nucor laid off no employees while all others did, and this interview was accusatory towards a company that was steadfast while others were not. It's one thing to decrease wages for workers, but laying them off completely breaks company loyalty and trust, which Nucor does a great job of holding onto. It's 2019 now and Nucor has thrived 10 years after this interview. The answer was not only Buy American, but tariffs on the imports of steel from outside sources which evens the playing field against China's low quality, dumped, and subsidized steel the non-informed American consumer would gladly want to bring into our country and taint the integrity of our structures and diminish the strength of our industrial field which is the backbone of American progress.

I like the buy American clause- I just wished instead of letting the Bush tax cuts expire the government would raise tariffs on goods from countries we have a trade deficit with us. Aiming for balanced trade will help make both US and our trade partners rich.

" Buy American " People bought GM products thinking they're 100% made in America, when in fact they're cars are only 50% American made and the other 50% are sourced from Mexico. The irony here is that Honda and Toyota are 70% American made, so that makes Japanese brands more American than so-called domestic brands.

Here's something really sickening; My Girlfriend told me that she had learned in college the other day that a full 1/8 of imported goods from China go directly to Wal Mart. So it's easy to see the type of companies that are fighting against these measures. That is why we must all unite and fight to save AMERICAN JOBS! Yours definitely could be next, mine is already gone!!!!

What made the Great Depression so severe and long lasting was protectionist measures just like the Buy American clause, enacted by every country, which reduced world trade by 70%. Layoffs are acceptable in the long term because the economy will simply adjust; a natural process we shouldn't be afraid of. Workers will find jobs in other industries in which their countries can be more competitive. If anything, we should be eliminating trade barriers right now, not putting them up.

Wait, I found out why Zigi is so damn anti-American, he is NOT an American! Zigi, America places billions of American dollars to maintain a military force to help keep peace all over the world, and that includes helping you! You think we Americans are overpaid, well, if you have skills and ability, come to America, get your citizenship, and you can be paid just as well! Other than that, we Americans who are being overpaid are also taxed to help pay for international aid

American industries have been asking consumers to "buy American" for years. Answer this then: What good is buying American if none of the products we use everyday are built in *other countries* and *not* the USA, or even Canada? That doesn't make any sense.

I have met so many wonderful Americans in my life. The U.S.A is a beautiful and great country so buy American and take an active part in true change. As Americans we can do this and we will. Don't let a negative person get in your way. They only want you to fail as an American. Look past these individuals and move forward. Good luck and buy American, to all my fellow citizens and good peoples throughout the world, take care.

1. The stimulus should not have been passed 2. We should be concerned about the state of industry in the US and should either raise tarrifs or change our regulations. If you don't want tarrifs then 3. If the problem is with wages cut welfare and the minium wage- elimante both. 4. if the problem is with other regulations eleminate them

@BYPH I do understand the ramificatiions- you can't have everything- if a manufacturing economy is important If you want a minium wage and a whole list of regulatory protections and social programs then you need to have tarrifs in order to prevent companies from going to countries with a "more compeditive busniess enviroments" that lack these things.

The economic stimulus package is a joke. I searched on Amazon and other sites for six hours and I would say that of all the items that I looked at 95% were from China or other countries. I even looked around my home. The light switches, lights faucets and even the parts on my furnace and cars are all foreign made. Even the computer and monitor I am using right now. They truly have US over a barrel. As it stands now purchasing only American made goods will be difficult if not impossible to achieve. I mean a lot of imported goods are made in countries that pay slave wages. If you wanted to purchase a cell phone made only from USA parts and USA labor, it would probably cost you $2000 or more. Figure it out, it may take a factory in China three or four hours to make the parts and assemble it and cost them $3 in labor and $10 in parts. Here in America three hours labor with benefits would cost over $275 with the parts costing six to seven hundred dollars, or more. It took a long time for the American people to become addicted to foreign goods and it will take an even longer time for us to get rehabilitated. We pretty much screwed ourselves.

@TheCashistrash My thoughts exactly. I'm assuming that the guy in the video (Jeremy) making $87k a year has some form of post-secondary with a technical/trade degree/license. Regardless, $87k a year working as a Coal Saw Operator is ridiculous. His salary got cut in half to $43k, and he's talking about "cutting down." For fuck sake, half if his normal salary is still above the average income of a U.S. citizen. I hope Jeremy realizes how fortunate he really is. He's in a great position.

@doooobies332 I understand english i just have adhd. simply buying american does not create jobs, it simply funds the big buisness which decide to employ people. Simply giving buisnesses money does not ensure that they will spend it on employing more people. While I think outsourcing is taking away jobs it's not the root of the problem. The companies that went under caused more people to loose jobs than outsourcing. The drop in demand caused companies to tighten there belts or liquidate.

@doooobies332 I have nothing wrong with buying local! it helps those buisness expand. However, I'm not for protectionism it benifits us at the detriment to all other countries, it's sort of selfish. Protectionism is for example, a tarrif a large tax to artificially inflate prices of imports. The principle works, however, it will hurt foreign companies which need the money far more than we do, chinese white-collars make roughly $12,000 a year. I hope we can agree to disagre. :D

@doooobies332 extraordinary claim require extraordinary evidence. Saying that other countries hate us because were prosperous and they want to take advantage of us requires concrete evidence. If a product is good it will get recognition, if the product is not good but is american it means very little to me. Suppose you did but the hypothetical bad american product chances are it's itty bitty parts were bought from other countries. It's not about countries it's about everyone having good tech

So you admit limited protectionism is necessary as the worlds economies globalize. Good to see. I am disappointed to see you have nothing to add other then suggest we impose tariffs like the Chinese. 8:40 *_Oh the irony!!!!!_* Free trade is actually pretty simplistic, while protectionism is extremely complex and difficult to actually accomplish in a successful manner, due to how widespread and complex the conceqences are. It would take a PhD from Harvard to effectively formulate and explain how a protectionist policy can be implemented and accomplished successfully to achieve its intended purpose, but a moron can understand "we'll give you iPhones without penalty if you give us bananas without penalty." Free trade helps everyone, protectionism hurts everyone in every aspect of the economy. If you're steel company can't compete, than you're very existence is not benefial or economical. It's hurting the consumer to make them pay more for something just to keep your over-priced business afloat.
