"Buy Canadian": Freeland suggests "boycott" of US goods amid Trump tariffs

After weeks of threats, speculation, and preparation, the U.S. has set the stage for a multilateral trade war. The White House confirmed Saturday that a 25 per cent tariff on Canadian imports and 10 per cent tariff on Canadian energy will officially take effect on Tuesday.
Speaking to Global News’s Carolyn Jarvis more about how these tariffs may play out in the days ahead, Canada’s former deputy prime minister and current liberal leadership candidate, Chrystia Freeland, shared her perspective on the matter.
Freeland suggests Canadians should “boycott” buying U.S. goods at the grocery store and stick to buying Canadian products.

We should start a freer trade within Canada, to begin with. There are many barriers preventing the free flow of goods between provinces. At the same time, we really need to increase trade with Europe, Asia, Mexico, South America and basically the rest of the world. We should also build refineries in Canada instead of sending our oil to the US at a discount. Let’s also build pipelines and modern infrastructure to export our energy to other continents. The US is a bully. We have been putting all of eggs in the same basket for far too long. We need to diversify.

The United States' largest trading partners is Mexico. Canada is second largest trading partner for the United States. Last year Canada received around 16.3% of American products/services, while the Canadian exports mainly sent to the United States. The United States has far more leverage over Canada. You also make car parts that then get sent to America where Americans pay a tariff and manufacturers pay but its still less costly then moving, setting up new supply lines and sorting out all the logistics. Don't try to add a handicap to yourself when those plants already circumvent tariffs for Canadians and force more Americans to pay more for those goods. Also neither Canada or America are a communist country, so saying the countries name instead of the companies makes zero sense. China wouldn't own them an individual manufacturer would own them and they would likely just want to build a new plant that was coastal in British Columbia for easier transportation between China and their production facilities. This would create more jobs and keep the Canadians working in the other plants in work. Existing Automobile plants are situated near the great lakes for that exact purpose but would do Chinese companies very little good. Also those car companies pay taxes to Canada for operating in Canada. It's really not helping Canada to remove them and the product made are still built in Canada and help the Canadian economy.
