I've worked for Toyota for the last 13+ years, and after seeing, driving and dealing with the "new Toyota Truck Line" that has been introduced..I just picked up a '24 4Runner TRD PRO...last of the dinosaurs. Get one while you can...this new generation of Toyota Trucks is something that Toyota is going to regret for a long, long time.

Got a 24 trd off road premium 3 months ago, so glad i did!! Unless i crash n burn, should be set for life. Absolutely appreciate the simplicity & reliability, very sad to see toyota doing what they are doing with quality these days!!!! I guess nothing stays the same. I have a 98 Tacoma that has the same quality & reliability as the 24 4 runner & i don't care what anybody says, in my opinion, Toyota should just keep building these types of vehicles, they last forever if u take care of them & hard working people deserve an opportunity to purchase a good quality item like this that lasts, it seems our society has totally lost that, very frustrating & sad!!

The 4Runner was always a vehicle that I wanted. I picked up a 23 TRD Off Road a month ago and despite the horrible fuel economy and anemic powertrain it's everything I wanted it to be. I absolutely love the thing. It has a charm to it that is difficult to describe and will be a a vehicle I keep as long a possible.
@stephanematis
@stephanematis 6 ай бұрын
as a '17 TRD Off Road owner, your description of the powertrain is sadly dead on. I love the KDSS, the roll down rear window, but there are times where the engine/transmission make think '80s under-powered econobox and I am torn recommending it. Towing ? Painful choice. Need to pass someone while loaded for back country travel ? Plan it well. Will I change this reliable beast ? Hard to consider given the alternatives. I do recommend that people treat the undercarriage, say with lanolin, if you live in the salt belt. And if you have a TRD Off Road, exercise the 4L mechanism as often as you can on loose surface, otherwise it gets cranky. My transmission often won't get out of 4L in the normal manner, needing to stop in neutral, power off and then shift. When asked, I always mention how I wish the V8 had been an option on the 4Runner, my gut says it was built and sized for the larger engine.
@timalan7406
@timalan7406 6 ай бұрын
@@stephanematis Your description is exactly why this and other Toyotas are such great trucks. The 4.0 is built for 385 hp but is tuned to 278. If it were tuned to make you happy with the power, it wouldn't last long. That is why other manufactures suck, they chase numbers and impressions, which in the long run are worth about as much as their used trucks.

Last week I dumped my 24 Tundra for this exact 4Runner and couldn’t be happier. Although there was a lot I liked about the Tundra I just didn’t feel confident with the reliability and longevity of the engine. Although mine wasn’t under recall yet, I’m sure that will be coming to all the 22,23, & 24 Tundras. I actually use my 4 WD vehicles on ocean beaches and on deep woods logging trails and would be screwed if my engine blew up. On another note the build quality of this 4Runner blows the build quality of the new Tundras and Tacomas away. My guess is the 6th gen 4Runner will also suffer in the build quality category as well. Yes it will be built in Japan but Toyota seems to have ‘cheaped out’ on all components. The plastics in the new Tundra couldn’t be any cheaper or thinner. The plastic which formed the base of my driver seat on the Tundra cracked twice and I weigh less than 200 lbs., come on Toyota, really? 🤦‍♂️

Mine cracked also on 24 tundra TRD pro. Have broken 2 volume control knobs and recently my back up camera dumped the calibration and had to be recalibrated to get the back up guides working. It has 9,000 miles on it. Going to go test drive a 4R tomorrow 24. For all the reasons listed.

If reliability is a priority, always go for the last model year of a particular vehicle. I still like the idea of the new hybrid 4R with its 2400w onboard capability but at the same time this would do just fine with an Ecoflow or similar.

@@shawnbrodrick8673 oh nice prices are coming down pretty quickly on those things. There’s still a case for an onboard system which can automatically turn on the engine to recharge itself but yeah I think that is a relatively niche case and an EcoFlow like that would suit me just fine.

You should do reviews on the model that is mostly available, the TRD Off Road. Locally the TRD Pro is priced too high, and low volume (at least in Canada). In 2022, I could’ve ordered a TRD Pro and waited at least 8-12 months, or a TRD Off Road for $10K less and wait 4-6 months.

60k (USD) is likely a real cash cow for a vehicle that's required little to no P&D over the past 10 years or so. I bet they can make these for $30-ish thousand, and are riding the wave caused by the other manufacturers and their over zealous MSRP increases. My wife loves her '18 that we got for $33k brand new. The 4Runner is somewhat in a class by itself. Meaning, it doesn't do any one thing great, but does a lot of things really good. It is also a vehicle that if you keep up on maintenance could legitimately last your lifetime and/or pass down to your kids or grandkids. I'm right under 50 years old and I can't stand the 14" computer screens and computer gauge clusters that come on new cars. I don't want or need any of that crap. I'll take reliability and a vehicle that can go anywhere I need to go on and off road and I know it's going to get me home at the end of the day. If I could buy the new 6th gen for 10K less than the current 5th gen I'd still buy the 5th gen. I'm serious.

I tend to be decisive but I'm planted squarely on the fence between the 2024 and 2025 4Runners. I've owned a couple of 4Runners (including a truly awful 4 cylinder in the early 1990's). I would wait for the 25 if it wasn't for the 4 cylinder even though it is a turbo. I'm thinking of longevity which is hard to imagine anywhere close to 5th Gen.

As we are seeing now the previous tundra, tacoma and 4runner are the only ones that are built with quality.

TRD ORP is better than TRD PRO easily because - KDSS, body roll is reduced. Driving is better, suspension is also better. Can always get aftermarket mods for the KDSS TRD ORP. I'm thinking about this or RAV4. One is extremely rugged feel and reliability factor plus a real 4x4. Other is a solid family SUV with all functions needed.

I forget I have 5 gears because the transmission doesn’t draw attention to itself. Hop in a friends 9 or 10 speed and there’s nothing but clunks and lurches.

It would be nice to have at least an extra gear to help with the gear ratios, especially when merging into ongoing traffic. When you press on the gas and expect it to downshift to give you more power, but it doesn’t, because it only has 5 gears lol.

The Car Care Nut loves the 5 speed transmission. States it is very smooth and reliable.

Can't beat the Japanese made vehicles, the Tex/Mex vehicles are all problem ridden. Sure the 4 runner has bad fuel economy but its bullet proof. I'd wait 5 years on the new ones to let Toyota get the bugs out. What I want is that new transmission the new ones have on my 2023. Wish it would hook up to my tried and true v6, now that would be awesome..

Unfortunately, that's not even the case anymore. The new Lexus GX is made in Japan and is suffering the same manufacturing issues as the Tundra.

I had an '07 FJC (very similar platform) and a '19 ORP that I did a BMC, lift, Falcon shocks and 275's. There was a lot to love like the capability offroad, reliability, roll down rear glass, flip up hatch to change under. OTOH the 5 speed was horrific in the mountains, the seats were not comfy on long trips and the tech was laughable, no carplay in a '19?? Wonky shifting into 4lo after how many years? No 4auto mode, only 2hi or 4hi which SUCKS if you live in areas where you have variable snow/pavement during fall or spring thaw. I sold mine and got a Raptor which is shockingly better at nearly everything except lasting 400k miles. :D

This will outlast anything else that Toyota makes from 2025 & beyond.

Toyota needs to go back to the previous engines. Definitely buy this year if you want one, if it's the new engines it'll be less reliable and most likely require a recall based on what's happening right now.
