I was going to buy the Limited for its full time 4WD, but that would have been a mistake when KDSS is the coveted star. I have the GX460, and I can say that for the value, the Pro cannot be beat. It is such a great value, that going up to the GX is still a compromise, since it will have more upkeep, like the coolant needing to be changed every 3 years, for example. I do all myself, so not a money issue, but the fact that the 4.0 is better that the 4.6 in reliability just show what an incredible value the Pro currently is.

Its a real solid cruiser on the freeway with 23 mpg. I still may buy the wife the new LC or new 4runner, not sure yet, not convinced 4 cyl turbo or hybrid turbo is the way to go for longevity. I laugh when I seen auto reviewers saying this 5 spd auto trans is outdated, blah blah, we will see how long the new 8 spd autos last compared to this tried and true 5 spd. Only neg is city driving is around 13-14 mpg but to be expected and not a big deal to me.

5th gen 4Runners are definitely great. I bought my 2023 Offroad Premium new and I love it. They're not for everybody, though, and I wouldn't be too fearful of the upcoming generation. Right now is last call, if you want one, buy a 2024 brand new. The powertrain is dead reliable, yes, but other truck powertrains manage to be dead reliable while doing better than 280lb-ft of torque and 17mpg combined. The new Tacoma 4cyl, non-hybrid, would save you $5-10k in fuel over a decade, while putting far more torque down. The 5-speed automatic has tall enough gears that 1st gear in low range when offroading is a little too tall, something the modern 8-speed automatic would fix. These 4Runner frames are old school and they still rot, which the new frames should be much more resilient against. I also find it nearly inexcusable that they ditched a locking gas cap and/or fuel door on the 5th gen as a weak costcutting measure; my 1999 had a locking fuel door. I do love the sound of this V6 though. Having this "old school truck" with the modern amenities 2020/2021+ added is great; my favorite is the 2023+ heated steering wheel. For the Offroad and PRO trims, I absolutely love the manual transfer case lever--that is surely going away on the new one.

I’m looking for a 20 with mileage. These new prices are too much. I don’t care how the 25 looks. If it’s turbo charged I don’t want it.

in my opinion both are great. people say 6th gen hybrid is bad but when it comes to hybrid toyota is king. also they do have 10 year warranty on battery.

Sold my 5th gen 4Runner and got a 3rd gen tundra platinum. I’ll forever miss my 4Runner

How do you find the full size truck platform compared to the 4Runner? Fuel differences? Driving feel?
@Sam-dq7ws8 ай бұрын
@@nicksince9487 Had a 2019 Sr5P 4Runner and now 24 Terra Pro Tundra. Loved the smaller wheelbase on 4Runner but missed open bed of previous 2016 Tundra. Fuel is a little better in Tundra believe it or not and so much more power but the 4Runner has better road feel (non electric turning) and a lot tighter turning radius ! Both great trucks for sure :)

It really comes down to one thing, and that is quality over time. A Toyota truck or SUV will drive and feel the same at 5 years, 7 years or 9 years.

We had a new Tacoma for a month & traded for ORP KDSS with wheel package. Wife would not drive the truck but loves 4 runner.

David, Every 4Runner is a good buy but I think the greatest 4Runners were the ones with manual transmissions. 🥳🥳I hope the 6th generation brings back a manual option.🤞🤞

Those were fun and all but frankly 4th and 5th gen 4Runners are better and more reliable than the first three gens. That said, there is frankly a chance that the 6th gen might actually bring back a manual transmission option. The Tacoma adopted a worldwide 6-speed manual transmission and is running the same engine as the 4Runner will. It would frankly not be all that hard for them to engineer that manual into the new 4Runner.

By reviewing the new 6th gen 4Runner expectations, and new LC250 market position, this 5th gen 4Runner is a great deal right now. Plus $3-$5k discount right now.

They're super reliable I've had two of them.. and yes they hold together very well. The negatives are they don't handle well , they don't do well in crash testing, and they use a lot of gas. They are amazing at holding value though...

Excellent, insightful review David/ Thanks. I just bought the exact 2024 4Runner you tested here since I hope to keep it for 10-15 years for sure.

I had a 4th Gen V8 4Runner. I test drove the 5th Gen 3 times. It's the right size for me and I do take my SUV off-road. But I simply hated that drivetrain. The V6 has little torque off the line. It is roughly the same 0-60 as my old V8, but to get any power from that V6 you have to rev it, and at medium to higher RPM that V6 is very unpleasant -- it has bad NVH. Little torque, bad NVH, and horrible fuel economy. That drivetrain is reliable, but that is the only thing it has going for it.

I love my 5th gen TRD 4 runner, probably one the best cars I have ever driven. Japanese vehicle engineering is the best in the world.

Thank you for this overview David. I traded my 2016 SR5 Premium for a 2023 TRD ORP a few months ago. I'm old school and love my 5th Gen for the reasons you stated.

Great video. I was able to get a '23 TRD Off-road premium after waiting several months. It's not the color I'd pick, but I wasn't going to let it go. Now I'm thinking of trading in my wife's car (she likes my 4runner) for a '24 TRD Pro for me. You sold me bro!

Just got a 23 SR5 Premium! Upgraded from a 17 Yaris hatchback, and I must admit I feel a little spoiled in this thing! And I can say with full confidence, I’ll never own anything other than a Toyota ❤❤
