In italy we actually have a furikake equivalent to garnish pasta. It's a mixture of dried herbs (parsley, garlic, and chilly, plus sometimes other herbs and/or dried tomatoes). Unlike furikake you do not sprinkle it directly on pasta: you heat up a tablespoon of extravirgin olive oil in a pan, add the herbs, warm them up (they should not fry) for a minute, then add the freshly cooked pasta with a dash of their cooking water and stir until the water has evaporated. it's a good way to have pasta when you are in a hurry.

rwjarhead Depending on where you live, you may be able to buy these things in an Asian or Japanese grocery store. You can definitely buy many of them online, either on Amazon or through other online retailers. Where I live (California), we can buy some of these items even in our regular supermarkets - not even Asian markets, including the sushi seasoning. Good luck!

One of my favorite snacks on earth is buying a white cheddar flavor popcorn, and then throwing some furikake in the bag, shaking it up, and devour. The white cheddar goes so well with the seaweed flavor.

Shinichi is absolutely right! In Hawaii many of us sue the yellow packet Tamanoi sushi no ko in our sushi and other items. My obachan used it along with the sushi vinegar Chikyu uma;

Where I currently live in the U.S. I have one small Japanese market (kind of distant) and around 4 Asian Supermarkets. I am very lucky to have them.. What I have in my pantry/refrigerator: Tonkatsu, Oyster & Soy Sauces, Furikake, Nori Packets, Kewpie Mayonnaise, Yakisoba , Udon & Raman Noodles, and Rice. Plus, one onigiri maker that I found at one of the aforementioned markets. Yes, I do love Japanese food! In a little over two years I plan on living & working in Japan and have the selection of goods that you described.

Ohayo boys! Happy Thanksgiving to you! After my おかさま passed away, my son (Josh) was insistent on keeping many of her Japanese traditions alive. Such as, keeping many types of furikake around for gohan and ochazuke. When I was growing up, no matter what we had-or where we had dinner-on my daddies’ night off, he would always have ochazuke. Needless to say, Josh is obsessed with the variety of furikake that’s available at our local Japanese market. Our new obsession-thank you sister Niki Niki-is “Nametake” over daikon oroshi, over hot gohan-so delicious! Oh my gosh! So many memories! I have tears in my eyes.....My mom always kept sushinoko, shio konbu, taberu niboshi, amongst the many other Japanese favorites in the house. I’m so impressed with your “kappa maki,” “kappa maki,” kappa maki,” ☺️ making, and I’m in love with your gohan chawan!! Where did you get it? Thank you so much for everything! Honestly, you’ve taught Josh and I so much about Japanese cooking! Hontou ni domo arigatou gozaimashita! I cannot wait for the next video!

I have said before one of my favorite things to do while traveling is to grocery shop. Oh the food quality in Japan is superb, especially the bread bakery selection, yum! Even just the different thicknesses of sliced white bread, so yum! Miss that. From grocery we would stock up on a specific brand of Ponzu sauce and a specific meat marinade that our building manager introduced us too. Also just a variety of crunchy savory snacks and sweet candies. Now we can get decent Ponzu here in US but ohhhh that marinade, I miss it! We always got Salad Pretz which we can't get locally either, just have pizza Pretz now. What we buy locally now that is also good is gyoza. If you cook it right it's the best! What I haven't had since I left Japan is okonomiyaki, miss that! Thanks for the vlog, these are great ideas!

Hey Patti, if you've really got a hankering for okonomiyaki, Jun from Rachel and Jun has a pretty fantastic recipe for how to make it at home. I usually use Sprouts coleslaw mix when I make mine, and get the dashi powder from our local Asian market. @@PurdueAlum01 depending on where you live, your local Asian store should have the kewpie mayo and okonomiyaki sauce. I believe they are also available on Amazon. And some clever soul has also made both from scratch and you can find her recipes online.

It doesn't matter whether you're eating from a konbini or the higher end restaurants or bakeries, the presentation is always stunning, the attention to detail amazing, and the flavors are fresh and bright. Great idea. I am also looking for recipes for Japanese foods that are low FODMAP ( more or less according to Monash Uni site). Long time IBSD sufferer here. After experimenting, a low FODMAP diet and lots of sleep are the only things that work for me.

Best things bought in a Japanese market lately: Iwatani butane stove! I can do real stir-fries now. It's outstanding! Some binchotan Japanese charcoal. I've not decided what kind of set-up to burn it in yet, but there's yakitori in my future! Mitsuwa Marketplace has some really good bentos. A nice bento, some Ito-En cold green tea, and sumo on the telly in the eating area, is as good as it gets. Kewpie mayonnaise. Here's a recipe for a quick breakfast: Take two hard-boiled eggs and cut them in half. Sprinkle on S&B "Seasoned Pepper" which you get at the Japanese market also. Sprinkle on seto fumi furikake, then drizzle on Kewpie mayo. Bon Appetit! I'm kind of tired of wasabi in everything, there are other flavors. Check out SENBEI. On the Mainland US it was often called "mochi crunch" that's arare, well, senbei are large pieces of what I'd called ultra-arare. It is the taste of pure nostalgia

I use furikake is my canned tuna fish! So good!

I use Furikake in place of mayonnaise(since I don't care for mayo) when I'm making a tuna melt. I mix the tuna with a little bit of olive oil, then some seasoning, and then add some dill pickles or pickled jalapenos, and it turns out really good. The funny thing about furikake is that for a long time, only a few stores carried it. Just 5 months ago, I could only buy it at wal-mart or an Asian grocery store, but now I can find it everywhere. Sadly I can't find the Tamago Furikake.

Boy do I feel proud of myself. Second night in Tokyo (after five days in Kanagawa). Went to the grocery store (it was Seiyu last night, and Taiyo/Ikiiki tonight) at 8pm. All the ready-to-eat stuff was marked down. Got some maguro sashimi for 250 yen, three plain rice balls for about 140 yen, a piece of fried salmon for 70 yen, and a bonito flake onigiri for 65 yen. That's the cheapest sashimi dinner ever, even after discovering Uodon (typical kaisendon for less than 700 yen) in Fujisawa. Stay tuned - I think I will finally start making use of that Instagram account. Incidentally.. for those wanting to try this.. make sure you get the free packets of wasabi, shoyu and the ginger flakes with the sashimi.

And yes.. I wrote down all the stuff in this video and in Part 2, and am bringing back lots of stuff.. the sushi powder, the ochazuke packs (they sell them at Daiso, by the way), the Gohandesuyo, several types of furikake.. If I do this again tomorrow night I will look for the matcha powder they put out at the kaitenzushi restaurants. You guys are fantastic.
