Best thing about flexcut is they're AVAILABLE, with a little stone/sandpaper work they can be transformed to a flat grind. Those other manufacturers not so easy to find... in Canada anyway.
@grahamcairns224910 ай бұрын
Chipping away offers most of the whittling brands, and Lee Valley carries most of the gouge companies. Both are in Canada. I had trouble finding a Canadian company for a while as well. Happy carving.

Yay Flexcut! For the money, great tools. I tire of some people looking down their noses at Flexcut due to lower prices. Use them to carve before you demean them. Helvie and OCCT also good tools. My 2 cents!

Nice video! I like the Flexcut roughing knife and detail knife. I like the little crook in the handle to keep the handle from rotating in your hand. I also like the Deep Holler Knives and OCC knives. Would love to get a Helvie knife.

Great video thank you! I actually ordered all the gouges from shaff because they seem to have decent ratings and an affordable price. Probably way too many gouges than I will ever use but at least I have them all and can pick and choose over time. It seems to me they definitely all need to be sharpened! Even the ones that were Factory sharpened for an extra fee! Now I have to sharpen all of them anyway it'll be good practice LOL

I've been carving for over 50 years and your recommendations are well founded. Flexcut, both their knives and gauges are remarkable for quality and price. I question Badger, I've seen a lot of quality issues. Helvie, since Ken sold out years ago, has turned into a bit of a disaster. They've at least stopped taking payments for knives that take a year to deliver. Deep Holler is becoming continuously out of stock which is sad they can't keep up with the orders, they make a remarkable and reasonably priced product. I use a blacksmith out of N. Minnesota who hand forges the most beautiful knives available and for a cost less than Helvie or Deep Holler. As for gouges, Taylor and Swiss Made have served me well for many years. Thanks Alec for a great presentation and good info.

Two Cherries...RC 61 holds an edge for a LONGG time!...Also, check out any edge tools made in Solingen Germany. I have a bench knife that belonged to my grandfather. Good ole Solingen steel. Probably close to 90 years old and still sharp enough to shave the hair off a gnats arse...Flexcut, definitely worth the money! Ready to carve right out of the package!

Literally just watched your older video on knife recommendations yesterday! I ordered an original OCCT knife as a treat to myself since I’ve been using the same Flexcut detail knife for a few years now. I LOVE my Flexcut, but Im looking forward to a fully flat grind for easier stropping, and a rounded spine to save my thumb. The blade should be a bit better too from what I’ve heard. Been loving these kind of videos lately!

Hi there, I am a beginner as regards whittling and I watch mostly your videos and those of another well known person on KZbin. I have Flexcut knives, a Mora whittling knife, some that I made myself, and some of the Two Cherries brand. I was interested to see what you use to sharpen your knives so I clicked on the link in the video description, which took me to the Work Sharp site. One of the sharpeners there is the Ken Onion edition, which I have and use expensively for all my knives other than whittling knives. I tried it on a whittling knife once and found that the fact that it puts a very slight concave edge on the knife, makes the edge less suitable for whittling. The edge doesn't bite into the wood at flat angles, you have to use a steeper angle. I went back to manually sharpening my whittling knives. I would like to know which of the Work Sharp tools you use for sharpening and if you experienced the same issue with the Ken Onion edition, if you do use it.
@AlecLaCasseArt10 ай бұрын
Yes, I know what you mean! It helps to use the plastic backer on the ken onion’s belt to prevent the rounded bevel !
