We grew up with them...they were sold for ages. The XJ Jeep Cherokee is a legendary vehicle. But they're getting hard to find. Check out this pristine 2000 model as Doug takes it around town, and shows off some of the upgrades and features on the facelifted post-97 model.

I have a 1998 Jeep XJ that I purchased from my brother in 2009. She had 160k back then. Just turned 300k yesterday and still going strong. She is well cared for. I do have a lot of off road modifications done but I have not, and will not cut her up. I love my XJ and will keep her alive for as long as I can. Oh, and it's a 5 speed manual.

@@hakkuraaz you will love both. Manuals are rarer than automatics. Well at least in the stats they are. My uncle who is a professional mechanic never even seen a manual xj till he saw mine. But I've owned both and if you can buy either you will be happy. The discussion for if it's better or not to me is what you prefer. I love manual vehicles.

I'm on my 3rd cherokee as of now! I had a stock blacked out 87 with only rims and tires done to it (absolutely spotless). Then I bought a chopped up off roading one. Which I didn't like so much because it gave the jeep too much of an aggressive vibe. Now I have a silver one on a 4.5 inch lift with rims and tires. Without any cuts. It has zero rust. I absolutely love the old school cherokees. If anyone is thinking about getting one do it. You wont regret it!

I've just bought a 1998 XJ in the UK. Chilli pepper red and pretty much stock apart from a 3" lift. No rust underneath and it's in immaculate condition. The guy sold it for cheap because it has a coolant leak and he didn't want the hassle of fixing it. 😮. I got it for a steal. Just for the record, us Brits say leaf springs too. I've never heard anyone refer to them as cart springs 🤷‍♂️

Bought mine a year ago for $5500 with about 130k miles on it. Put about $3000 worth of repair into it, but I think it’s worth it. Very little surface rust, and it runs great, burns almost zero oil. Only real problems I have with it is that it won’t start on the first try and check engine light comes on every now and then with no DTC. Happy with it and hope I have it for a while

I’m not a car guy by any means but this vehicle fell into my lap and now I’m in love. Friend of mine moved on short notice and needed it gone ASAP. He knew I was desperate for a new vehicle and didn’t have much money. Got a 1990 Laredo 4 door 4x4 with 185k miles for only 1500$! All it needed was a new battery and has been running strong. I had no idea what an iconic vehicle it was until after I bought it. It’s stock, only a little surface rust and he installed a pop out touch screen radio, new speakers and had a shop put in a new headliner. Man this thing was a steal deal. It’s in the shop getting painted (gun metal grey) and I am going crazy waiting for it to finish so I can do some maintenance work on it. Maybe I’ll post a video on it this weekend.

Hi from England.I have 2 xj's. A 96 I have on the road running on LPG. And a 94 I've had for 21 years ive kept for spares but now considered putting back on the road as they are rocking horse poo rare now and crazy money. Everyone wanted grand cherokee's until fairly recently but now the price's of the two jeeps have traded places. My dad worked at land rover for 40 years until BMW took it over, forced him off the spanners to work in an office and gave him a nervous breakdown. So I will never own a L/R and guess what. Almost maintenance free and no oil on my drive. Love to all fellow jeep lovers.

XJs are great. I got my first one from a lady at work for scrap, i only had to pay her for the tires on it. It was a '94. I fixed it instead of scrapping it and ended up driving it for nine years as my daily driver. Sure, I had to fix a bunch of things over the years and it finally rotted out to where I didn't want to fix it anymore, but it sold me. Now I have three, two '98s and a '96. None of them are chopped up or cut. Both '98s are near perfect with no rust in the floors or frame at all. Everything is still painted underneath! The '96 needed floor pans, but those are available. Do yourself a favor and shoot some transmission fluid in the bottoms of the doors. I noticed at the end you have some rust there. If you pour some fluid inside and let it drain out, it'll coat the metal and stop that. When the weather breaks I'm going to do the same thing with my rocker panels, I'll just drill a hole on top and squeeze it in. And if your check engine code happens to be P0455 for large evap leak, check the steel vapor line from the vapor canister to the gas tank, it's only about a foot and a half line but it rusts out and that's where the leak is. Damn thing drove me crazy trying to find it!

I just bought an 01 60th anniversary edition that the previous owner converted to a 5 spd manual. Full trim with leather, heated seats, near mint interior. 184K on it and in WI so its getting rusty on the rockers fenders and wheel well lips behind the flares. Im planning to remove the flares and cut away the rust to re-build "steel flat-top" flares to open the wheel wells just a bit to give tire clearance and reduces damage if I side swipe a rock or tree. Also replace the quarter panels and rockers, install a 4 inch lift, and 33" tires. It will look mostly original besides the lift kit and other mechanical upgrades and a winch as well.. I want to keep it daily driver friendly, but can also get on some adventurous routes as well. So in the end, its not going to be cut up in any real noticeable way.

I’ve recently bought a 2001 Jeep Cherokee xj limited with 250.000 miles. At one point the engine was rebuilt. It does have some rust that needs fixing and a small oil leak and low oil pressure. But overall pretty good condition for what it is. I got a pretty good deal on it. I’d say for nice Jeep xj’s it’s pretty much too late nice xj’s are going for 5000 10000 15000 dollars. But LOOKOUT there. There is still plenty of good deals out there. One time I was scrolling through Facebook marketplace looking for xj’s and I found one. It was a 1 owner car it was well maintained it had little to no rust and 184.000 miles. And to top things off it was a limited model. For sale for $2200!!! That sounded like one hell of a deal so I messaged the guy asking if it was available and he said yes. I thought for like 30 mins should I buy the thing. That’s where I screwed up BIGTIME! Because I messaged the guy asking if i could come look and he responded saying that someone’s already coming to look at the thing. The next day the listing was completely gone. Proof that he sold it off to someone else. I was like DAMN If I would’ve responded earlier I probably could have bought the thing. Even though I felt ABSOLUTELY CRUSHED with disappointment I didn’t give up. I kept looking for 5 months then I found my Jeep. Did need some work but it was the exact specs that I wanted it was the color I wanted and it was a limited model. So I went and looked at the Jeep and bought the thing. I felt like the happiest man in the world. Knowing that I got a Jeep that I wanted for a LONG TIME. It was making me think that if I responded to the other Facebook listing I could’ve bought that nice $2200 xj. But I’m not gonna be too regretful here because despite the problems. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MY JEEP. These Cherokee xj’s are a hot commodity nowadays. People will line up to buy these things. Very thankful I was able to get mine.

I love my 1999 XJ. I paid five figures for it in 2019. It does need a lot of little repairs, because things are worn out after 22 years. Engine oil seals, brake lines, wheel bearings, universal joints, etc. It has been fairly expensive to own. It is a great vehicle, but go in with your eyes open if you are planning to buy. It takes some love, labor, and dollars to keep it on the road. The nice thing is that it is fairly simple to fix most things. You can save quite a bit if you are willing to do the work yourself. I am planning to use it as an overland vehicle once I get the repairs sorted.

How about showing some love for the Grand Cherokee 1st generation? The 1995 ZJ Jeep Grand Cherokee is the evolution of the XJ. The ZJ, in the Laredo or Limited trim, is a great, restorable 4x4 also, in my opinion. Less and less out there in original shape. The 4.0 Power Tech Inline 6 cylinder with the 242 4 speed auto transmission, 231 transfer case (Command Trac) and Dana 30 rear diff, 35 front diff. 4 wheel DISK brakes, including the advanced, 4 link control arms front and rear, and coil spring suspension all round. Hard to beat....very hard truck for the knowledgeable Jeep lover. What say you?

The XJ was built with simplicity in mind...a lot like the old CJs. Simple, easy to work on, easy to repair on the trail, plenty of parts, etc. My computerized 2006 Rubicon looked cool but sure had a lot of computer/wiring/electronics problems.....I wouldn't buy a new jeep at all.

@@DougsCars How ya doing, from sunny Southern California? I wheeled in my CJ for more than twenty years, from 1993 until 2013, in the desert near Yuma, Arizona. Loved it. Found a 2006 Rubicon with only 25 K miles on it, picked it up, sold the CJ in 2013, and was happy that I'd now have something reliable to drive in the summer near the Colorado River with an air conditioner. Within a few short years, and only about 33K miles on the Rubicon, I started having computer and electrical problems. Took it to the local Jeep dealership. They had it nearly 3 months with no solution in sight. They told me Chrysler never manufactured any new computer modules, the ones that mount on the firewall behind the battery. The owner of the dealership called me personally and allowed me to trade in the Rubi for a new Tacoma.....About a year ago a company called Wranglerfix.com in Florida contacted me and said my problem with the Rubi was common and had we connected when my problems popped up, I'd still own the Rubi. If you know anyone with computer problems I'd contact Wranglerfix.com. Thanks for the correspondance.
