I did the headliner job on my 2001 XJ some 3 yrs ago. It is good to have a second person to help. Otherwise pretty straightforward - it took a few hours of work. No issue with it since.

To fix the highway problem, regear upto a 4:10 if running 31's that will vastly improve your gas mileage as well as performance

A few years from now the only people that will still have properly running XJ's are the people who kept them stock, garaged and never lifted them. When that day comes they will have something that will be worth more than when it was brand new. These were never meant to be full-time off-road vehicles, they were meant to be small grocery getter vehicles that could become off-roaders in a pinch if the situation presented itself. You know, for all of those paranoid American soccer mom preppers back in the 80's and 90's. There was a massive blizzard in the Northeast of 1978 called the blizzard of 78'. Maybe they were thinking about this when they designed this, forst of it's kind small SUV back in the day.

They’re definitely good on road and off road. I’m sure there will still be modified XJs that are properly running in a few years, just depends on how well the owner took care of it

We have a 2000 XJ, we are the original owner with the original 0331 head, no crack, but has never been overheated. 372,XXX miles so far, same color! MPG is 13-15 city, 19-21 mpg highway, have calculated almost every fill up mpg. All stock 4 x 4, with the original, untouched AW4 & 4.0.

I have a 2000 XJ, (196,000 Miles) (Zero Rust). 4.5'' Lift and run 31's , regear if ya do a lot of Highway driving. I live in AZ and I daily drive mine in 110-115 heat . The only issue I have had in the past 8 years is heat soak on those 120 days. The one thing ya gotta watch with these XJ's is the oil pressure.

It’s not really the gearing that’s the issue it’s just the fact that it won’t downshift when it should. I’ve had a lot of people suggest that I need to adjust the kickdown cable. I’m kinda jealous that you have a completely rust free XJ lol thanks for watching!

@@KCars You Missed the Point my friend. The computer isn't sure when to down shift due to the larger tires (It thinks its in the proper gear). You can adjust the cable but that could effect in town driving and shifting too soon. Just an FYI (Action/Reaction)

I had an ‘01 similar to yours but in silver. I too had the headliner issue, as well as the rear main seal leak. Never had the downshift issue, but I didn’t put bigger tires or a lift. Nor did I have the highway float issue. There again, mine was in FL all her life even with her being 4x4. I really miss my XJ and In-line 6. Best engine ever built. She met an untimely demise thanks to a Chevy Silverado spontaneously combusting and burning my XJ to a crisp.

One thing about the gas mileage is to use gumout in the can that looks like sea foam. It must of took like maybe 8 bottles bottles but I did see an increase of 30 KM a tank that lasts to this very day. I run 91 grade gas and use one of those gumout bottles a month. My 4.0 runs like it’s brand new with absolutely no ticking or anything other than a nice idle. I’d highly recommend to anybody to get the brand new 4 hole injectors.

Very clean jeep, the cracking head is definitely something to be careful of, my previous Jeep didn’t run well and I’m 90% sure it’s cause it was cracked, maybe time to swap the motor for a stroker build! my current xj is a 99 and it has almost double the mileage of my previous jeep but runs way better with better fuel efficiency even though it has bigger tires.

I replaced the bottom end on my 2000 with 230k miles because the previous owner ran it low on oil. The original head looked brand new with no sign of cracking, so I did a valve grind to it and threw it right back on, and it's still doing great thousands of miles later. I think that lots of XJ owners trash their fan shrouds since they're prone to breaking (they're like 30 bucks new, not sure why you wouldn't just replace it) and run them low on coolant since the water pumps/thermostat housings tend to leak, run them low on coolant which causes them to overheat then they blame the head for it.
@jacob.woodward
@jacob.woodward 2 жыл бұрын
@@willthecardude6900 yea that very well could be the case, but even amc knew it was flawed cause they went back to the thicker head shortly after, in the 2000 to like 04 I believe (including the engines used in the wranglers) they made the casting too thin between each cylinder, so in an overheating situation it’s more prone to crack. But the engines for the most part are bullet proof anyways so you have to be seriously mistreating it to screw it up. But that fan shroud man, I hate how brittle they are…. Broke it on old Jeep luckily they are fine in my current xj.
@willthecardude6900
@willthecardude6900 2 жыл бұрын
@@jacob.woodward Yeah, a head shouldn't crack regardless of how bad it's overheated, I agree with that part but I think even a non TUPY head is fine as long as it's not badly overheated, my 240k head is a testament to that. I feel like a lot of people don't realize that the fan shroud is there for a reason though, I see so many people remove it, they're dirt cheap and the aftermarket one I got for 30 bucks actually directs air better than the stock one believe it or not since it's beefier.

Regarding that lack of acceleration...... you very likely have 3.55:1 ring and pinion sets, but with the bigger tires, a change to 4.10:1 will make a pretty significant improvement. Some will say that 3.73:1 is a good choice, but from personal experience, the difference isn't enough to justify the cost and effort.

The 0311 head on the 00-01 models can crack even if it doesn't overheat but majority of the ones that had cracked heads early on got TUPY heads as replacements and you can check this by looking straight down for the letters TUPY cast into the head through the oil fill hole.

Another thing to look into for better performance on the highway, is an intake manifold swap, and fuel injector upgrade. The 4.0 HO intake flows a little better, and is direct bolt on. You'll have to reroute a couple vacuum lines though. As for the injectors, the Dodge Neon injectors are direct swap but have 4 holes in the nozzle. This will greatly improve fuel atomization.

@@scottdoubleyou563 His being a 01 already has the highest flowing 99+ intake manifold the only downside for his setup is it being a 01 it has the later more restrictive dual cat header setup instead of the older federal emission single cat setup 87-00s had. My 1999 XJ 2x4 has issues with the SKIM module, when there is too much heat, the antenna doesn't read the key properly and just locks, so it turns on for a couple of seconds then turns off... it is cool for when they try to steal it, but I can't trust it to make a long trip, because sometimes it happens when it is running, in that case it doesn't turn off immediately, but if I stop or stall for a minute, it does turn off... that really sucks, I bought it to take long trips and I can't really rely on it, other than that, the thing works in the city just perfectly.

Worst is the heating. Mine runs amazing and never over heats through actual operation of the vehicle other than sitting idle at a red light in the summer. I did everything like new rad ,water pump, hoses, tranny cooler,new clutch fan. You could always pop the hood open a crack when crawling or trail riding. I personally think with all I’ve the above and hood vents that there will always be a small percentage of it running hot at an idle or 4 low.

I have a 2000 xj I bought it last summer and it didn’t run properly when i bought it It overheated and the head cracked within the first 3 months the radiator also cracked And the ac didn’t work so we replaced the ac compressor. Sense putting a rebuilt head and replacing the radiator the only issues I’ve had are smaller common things. The window buttons on all passenger doors don’t work always. I believe the window lock malfunctions and must people just bypass it on all doors so they work you can get a new switch set for the drivers door but it’ll probably give out again My drivers window has been working off and on lately so I’m getting a new motor for it that should fix it. My knob for climate control only worked on full blast for the last few months and I ordered a blower resister to fix that but in the last week it quit working on the highest setting it won’t blow hot or cold ever. I’m still hoping the resister will fix it but I’m not sure lol. and after it overheated the electric fan was running always but today it quit so now I’m trying to figure out how to fix that😂 it also has the rear bumper rust and door rust and the headliner is sacking. I love my Jeep but it’s definitely been a work in progress I’m glad that I’m a person that enjoys working on cars and I want the experience and I’m thankful for it. But it can be frustrating if you let it or if you don’t have time or money to always be fixing. And also on the rear one of the top screws for your shock mount was twisted off when i bought my Jeep and that’s a common problem my cousin has a xj with the same issue. Interesting I Would never go back to the Clutch fan with the level of work you are willing to go i would go to two electric fans there is the slot for the stock fan and there is one hole to drill a bracket that needs to be filed and you are is Better MPG more horse power (or less wasted from the clutch fan) better cooling over all a good choice and it looks like the rock guard is missing from the fuel tank if so i really look to replace that the tank in gust the right location for a rock Strike the Kick down cable adjustment is easy to do but the big secret is that the jeep can do about 90 miles an hour the hangup is that the suspension system was designed in the 1930s and even with MODs is not really designed for speeds above 60 miles per hour thanks for the look at your Jeep

@@KCars I recently found out the electric fan is a secondary fan just in case. That's why it isn't coming on, it's not getting hot enough.

Yep it’s supposed to turn on at 218. Mine wasn’t spinning because it was locked up, which is most likely what caused it to overheat a couple times

Do a coolant system flush then replace Radiator, fan clutch, all radiator hoses, electric fan, water pump, thermostat, thermostat housing and new temp sensor and add trans cooler and she’s good to go!

Should I replace the clutch, radiator, and temp sensor even if they seem to be working normally? I’ve always heard people say “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it”.
@scottdoubleyou563

It wouldn't hurt. While you're at it, get under the dash on the passenger side, and check the heater core. It is likely the original piece, and could be clogged, hiding a potential leak. But definitely clean it either way.

Not to knock this video but you talk about the cooling system a lot, but here so more info for you since my brother bought a 94 cherokee sport and all he wants to do is drive it. 1. Ignition switch it when out so the key will get stuck and won't move sometimes it will or won't at all you can find it on the steering shaft when you remove the gauge clutcher it's a pain but it there. 2. Oil filter adapter O-ring his jeep is leaking like crazy so you'll need a new O-ring I recommend get it from O'Reilly, a T60 star bit tool, and a wrench that will hold it you'll have to knock out the T60 out the socket it comes with or jack up engine if you can it's a very tight spot to work in. 3. Is a bonus if you're lifting your jeep and add daddy fat sacks tires on it for the love of God make sure you mount you rubber brake lines in a good spot so tires don't eat them that how my brother bought it and it was a pain fixing it because the previous owner I guess was like send it end up fixing one side and breaking the other side not the rubber but the line itself because none of them were mounted and they were just there

I have a 2000 XJ with a rebuilt 4.0 from a '99. The only issue with parts compatibility was the coil pack. The '99 head doesn't have the bosses to secure the coil pack to it. So far though it's not been an issue.
