If I understand well, the idea for it to support your existing TV setup sounds pretty useful. Main usecase would probably be someone who has a soundbar for their TV, but no subwoofer. With this thing, you get an okay subwoofer, which you can wheel out and use as a sound system when you throw a party in the garden. Any speaker system of this class takes up a lot of room, but if it acts as your subwoofer while you're not throwing a party it becomes a bit more tolerable to have around
@DanielJacksonisbiggerinside Жыл бұрын
...except that it's not actually a good subwoofer. Or a good party speaker.
@frankcooke1692 Жыл бұрын
If you're stuck with a soundbar because you don't have the budget for decent stereo/surround speakers - spending $1000 on a boom-box probably wouldn't be a priority. It's a bit awkwardly sized to use as a sub for a TV. It also comes in at 26kgs - which is awkwardly sized to be portable. You can sort out a 12" sub/amp for your TV for just under a hundred bucks (you don't even need a fancy 2.1 system - just leech the stereo signal via split cables). And same for party speakers. You've seen those big bluetooth units that go for like $60 on Amazon? My friends bring those out to outdoor parties and they're enough to keep 50-60 people happy. There's usually an external battery or generator involved, but even those are pretty cheap.

I remember living in an apartment I had just a regular small PC speaker setup with a 6" sub. I lived on the 1st floor and had a little old lady that lived right above me. She knocked on my door one day complaining about a thumping noise coming from below her LOL. I could not believe that little sub traveled that far. I swear it wasn't even 20/100 volume too. Apartments suck.
@Daphoid Жыл бұрын
People always underestimate how well bass frequencies travel. This is precisely why I don't have a sub in my apartment. I've got some 8" studio monitors, but they sit on my desk on isolation stands. They have a pretty full sound stage, but I'm not rocking the floor with every note. I left my "eviction class" subwoofer at home (a 2x12" 900W SVS beast of a unit) for this very reason.

I have the SRS-XP700 slightly smaller and probably from the previous generation. I love it. it is super loud, has 25 hours of battery life. I personally have used it for 15 hours at medium volume before I needed to charge it. I would recommend this speaker instead of the new SRS-XV900. This is because you can buy the XP700 for around 400 dollars compared to the insane $900 for the XV 900 Even though it has less power and sound. It has amazing bass, great sound quality, awesome for outdoor use. I personally use this for pool parties (water resistant), sand volleyball (not sand resistant but is pretty good if you wipe it down afterwards), and ultimate. I love it probably the best Sony speaker I have owned. (I bought the previous 2 generations as well) The cons however of the xp700 is that the apps are not very good. this extends as well to all Sony speakers however. They need to update it and receive customer suggestions because if the supporting apps were improved these speakers would feel a lot better.

I also have the XP700 and I love it! I put it in my garage for watching movies and listening to music… I never turn the volume all the way up because my wife complains about it shaking the room inside the house… I’m thinking of getting another one for pairing, so I could have even a better movie experience (I think it’s probably going to be overkill but hey, you only live once)…

You don't necessarily put it at the highest volume, but you do have a lot of oomph, hours of battery time, and enough to make your booty shake. Plug in a microphone, you got a karaoke. Plug in a portable mixer, a few instruments, and you can have a live band playing. It's not in our culture to do fiestas like this, but they do exist, and such device makes it awesome all-in-ones.

My biggest problem with these types of speakers is that most of them I've tried (don't know if that's the case for this one) is that they recommend that you don't keep it plugged in all the time but don't give you the option to completely turn off the battery so you can just use it at home
@Juply Жыл бұрын
Just buy one which doesn't have a battery.
@michaelbeckerman7532 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. What Sony (and every other company that makes a similar speaker) should do is give these devices the ability/option to easily switch between a battery-powered mode and an AC-powered mode. No one wants to run a speaker like this on battery in their home and then have to keep on recharging it all the time. They ONLY want to do that when the speaker will be used where there is no option to plug it in. Also, a device this size should have an easy to swap out, user-replaceable battery as well. If you aren't going to give it the option to run on AC power, then you are going to be drawing down the useful life of that battery in relatively short order. Once that rechargeable battery is worn out/used up, you're going to have to likely take it to a service center or battery specialty shop to get it professionally replaced. That's going to take a considerable amount of time and effort, especially on a unit of this size. This is something important that Sony really should have factored into their design decision/product planning on this item, right from the very start.

The main problem with these wireless setups is the delay you get if you use it for basic sound mixing. I mean, no troubles just letting it play a playlist untouched but as soon as you wanna do a transition from one song to another on a mixpult, the delay throws you off. So you need to go wired then and this kind of beats the purpose.

But for about $150 - 200 bucks you can get a pretty hefty powerbank these days, and plug in whatever amp/speakers you want, as long as your battery gives enough current. 1000w 12" kenwood subs are about $60 second hand, with enclosure. It's not as neat of a package, but it's a whole lot more versatile. You can put each speaker wherever you want, and then still use it as a stereo when you get home. And you can use the powerbank for whatever. So for like, a third of the price you could have something way better and more practical.

Placing a box like that is pretty close to placing a subwoofer. Sub placement is crucial for bass reproduction and I wouldn't expect this to be different. Corner-loading it would get the most bass amplification, and standing it in the center of the room, the least. But yeah, I have no use case for a crate of sound like this one.

I'm pretty sure I passed a dude on Bourbon Street in New Orleans who could appreciate these speakers, his bicycle was one giant wall of noise with an insane nest of plugs and portable batteries. But "Massive Portable Party Dude" is a rather small niche in the speaker market... And they seem rather resourceful already, better to keep 'em busy god knows what speaker monstrosity they'll make if we keep making this easier lol (god I can't wait to hear it from miles away hahahaha)

It'd be interesting to hear how this performs outside to get rid of some of that muddy bass.

I love that all the units are SI except the massive one, they know exactly who they are marketing for.

For the support speaker mode, my LG C1 TV has a feature where you can pair to a Bluetooth speaker, check its placement in the room and then use the remote to sync the audio to use as a surround speaker.

corners are bass magnet. it makes sense when u move away from there to feel it less. thats why in studios they add bass traps in the corners.

I could really see the tv mode being used in the man-cave with the old flatscreen tv in there

Is it true you're not meant to put big speakers like that near your tv? I had the setup shown at 5:25 a few years back and after a while my tv had black lines running through it, completely ruining the picture. Suspected it was the speaker but never found out for sure.

What would be cool would be for the mids and highs speakers to be detachable on cables, or even wireless units that charge from the bass unit.

I think they added the TV support feature, bc you don't always have a party. And so that its not useless all the time, they added the TV feature, so it has another, more everyday application

Regardless of it not being for everybody which is true but the support it have for your TV is interesting. That means that if a person buy it just for partying they can also use it as a theater sound support system. Control the RGB lights with your phone via Bluetooth is Kool. Using one device to serve multiple purposes such as this party box is useful.

This speaker, through the video makes my own speaker setup's subwoofer engage more than I've ever heard it do before lmao

These things are going to be popular at college parties and tailgates, because that's exactly the sort of features my fraternity brothers and I could have used back in the day. Not sure it has a place in my life, but some younger folks that need a battery powered portable stereo/pa system are going to have fun with those.

That speaker looks and sounds neat, probably a little too bassy, good enough to make your neighbours happy at midnight. I work at a retail shop and we have on display the JBL Partybox 710. It's just as big, it's a bit older but it's very bassy at 40-45% volume. If we activate bass bost it gets a bit louder, we had to set the bass at -3 instead of 0, with BASS BOOST.

That tv boost mode could be good for like outdoor night time theater events in parking lots etc. Have some regular speakers and this to boost things over background noise.

I bought something similar during the pandemic. It wasn't playing 10 mins before the next door neighbour came knocking. I felt like a naughty teenager but to be fair It was a huge bluetooth Sony speaker waist height and the bass wasn't easy to control as it wasn't going through an equaliser. I think I could only have it on number three. In the end I sold it on ebay after 30 days and got something smaller but still powerful. Haven't heard from the neighbour since.

7:46 "I was hoping they'd be brighter" But you're in a fully studio lit set 😅. I'm sure wherever and whenever this might be used with the lights, it'll be dimmer, darker, and more moody hahaha
