Being able to contact emergency services, or providing tools that assist with personal banking and health management (such as the NHS app in the UK, since they have a single-payer system). Yes, far cheaper smartphones can also do those same functions 75%-80% as well as a top of the line iPhone, but my point is that the product category makes comparison these consoles to iPhone is _far_ from the apples-to-apples comparison it may initially appear (pun not intended lol).

in france, it's priced at 1000€. For instance, here the rog ally Z1 extreme was 700€ when it got out, it's now at 500€. BUT the ally X is at 900€ (which imo is so overpriced, nearly x2 over the standard ally). So as long as everyone is doing ridiculous price, the msi claw 8 is not that expensive compared to an ally X. I will wait for a bit more info about z2 extreme and legion go 2. I have a rog ally Z1 extreme and the 7" screen is too small for me, and I like the idea to transform it into a tablet, but it will depend if it's any good, wait and see

Then when I'm on the go, I take my Deck with me, sacrificing some performance for portability. I may try to set up Moonlight with Tailscale to play while I'm not home. Steam remote play never works well for me. Steamdeck + Desktop PC + Moonlight/Sunshine = match made in heaven

I really hate non symmetrical bezels. If it had trackpads, I'd buy it anyway. Having trackpads on the steamdeck oled completely ruins everything else for me. Not having trackpads removes SO much quality of life for anything that has inventory management or UIs designed for occasional mouse inputs.

+1 The Steam Deck was an insta-buy because of the trackpads (I preordered the launch LCD early and got one of the first batches, but later got the OLED when that dropped too). I am constantly in awe just how playable mouse-only games become on the Deck when properly mapped. I play Baldur's Gate EE, Stronghold, Fable: The Lost Chapters, various shooters - it's awesome! Those would be outright unplayable for me on any other handheld without trackpads. And as you say - some hybrid input games also benefit. It's chill to play Diablo II Resurrected on the Deck, but the inventory management gets tedious with a controler, so the trackpads help soooo much.

Also, one really great thing about 1600p 16:10 displays under 10 inches (or even 20 inches), is they look really damn good with 800p line-doubled to 1600p, which is 95% as foo looking as native 1600p, and you get either twice the FPS or twice the battery life, your choice, or 50% of each, personally I even like how good 400p looks subpixel rendered to 1600p, it really does look 90% as good as native 1600p on a screen under 10 inches, this will give you 4 times the FPS, which is 160 FPS in Shadow of the Tomb Raider at high graphics settings preset, which is insane for a handheld, the reason it looks also good is the high dot-pitch a 1600p 16:10 display under 10 inches has, with 4X 400p subpixel rendering, you can run anything, and mean anything with highly playable FPS performance, and retain almost perfect fidelity, it would make so much sense to offer these 3 presets in the main onscreen settings menu (2X line-double 800p mode, 4X 400p subpixel-render mode, and native 1600p mode), just imagine games lie Cuphead or Shovel Knight, Steamworld Heist 1&2 (or whatever indie game, or older pre-2018 game for example you want) at 4X mode with 10-15 hours of battery life as it only has to internally render at 25% of the iGPU's max.

​@@TheWWWyrm Strongly have to disagree there mate, just look at what you can do with integer scaled 240p with the OSSC Pro & RetroTink, those devices can make 240p look immaculate on a 4K 75-inch screen, and given just how nice 240p looks integer-scaled on a 4K 75 inch, it's safe to say 800p looks good on a 1600p display that isn't even over 10 inches, in fact, even 400p looks basically immaculate, and this is coming from someone who is really OCD about these things. I have a Sony BVM-OLED so I can have immaculate RGB subpixels, CRT's for immaculate motion-clarity, and I love how 400p looks subpixel rendered on a 1600p OLED under 10 inches, not only how it looks, but the frame-time latency is so smooth thanks to high & consistent rock solid FPS pacing, there will be a small handful of games that look better with 2X 800p, but 90% of my Steam, GOG & Epic games look good at 4X400p. When 4K RGB-Stripe display handhelds are available, the dot-pitch will be even finer, meaning integers will look even better, the very small fidelity loss you get for the massive performance boost is a no-brainer imo, up to 4X FPS, with minimum frames that barely dip under 100 FPS even in the latest games, or up to 4 times the battery life, for a perceptible 10-15% fidelity loss at the most, if handheld PC producers made a new handheld gaming system with a native hardware FPGA integer solution, the results would be even better, even lower latency, on the fly integer scaling in any game, super-sampled subpixel-rendering handled via the FPGA, along with shader overlays like dot-trio masks, scanlines, post edge AA algorithms. A 50 dollar FPGA chip could really be a massive upgrade for PC handhelds, especially if combined with an APU with a 3D cache, say 128MB of SRAM, that in itself would boost FPS by at least 50-75%, and most likely double minimum frames by 100%, even better, would be an X3D cache for the CPU cores, and an SRAM cache for the GPU (or just standard eDRAM), say a 90MB X3D cache for the Ryzen CPU cores, and 384MB eDRAM cache for the iGPU, that combined with an FPGA for almost lossless integer scaling would make handhelds an absolute powerhouse for PC gaming, and capable of playing anything at 120 FPS or much higher depending on the game. And then on top of all that, imagine a RAMDISK for running the OS and all the main tasks & apps like Steam or other launchers, only the game files are stored on a standard SSD, and the currently in use game data is loaded to the RAMDISK, this would lower latency even more and make save states possible for PC games, which would be absolutely ideal for a handheld, allowing you to quickly save state and put the handheld down a carry on exactly where you left of later, that's the pipe dream PC handheld for me.

I will likely get one. Linux is the only one who mentioned how quite it is. Its crazy for a handheld device to be that quite and powerful at the same time. Not a big MSI fan, but this is definitely on my list when it comes out in Germany

I have a gen 1 Claw 155h 512gb. I like it and use it all the time. I usually play it while in bed so I play it with the charger connected. The temp difference between battery power and AC power is crazy! On battery just idle on the Win11 desktop, I can be anywhere between 39c-65c, but while on AC power, it will idle at 65c-104c and constantly ping 90c-104c. I run CoreTemp on it, and it will hit over 100c on at least 6 cores before the desktop is fully loaded up and CoreTemp is displayed. I have repasted it, and replaced the thermal pads, and I have also added 6 extra mini VGA heatsinks to the heat pipes to try and help cool it, but it will constantly thermal throttle while on AC power in a game, and fans will always be at 100%. On battery, the fan curve and fan responsiveness is pretty lacking in my opinion. I believe they have quietness over performance set on these devices. Even in performance mode on battery, the device lets the CPU reach pretty high temps before upping the fan speed. And it is a pretty slow ramp up. The only time you will ever hear fan speed at or above 80% is if you manually set the fan curve or you are upgrading the BIOS/UEFI and it forces full fan speed during the update. I would like to see what the temps look like on the new model while running a game. I bet they are pretty high too. Im willing to bet that when you plug it into AC it will jump up pretty high as well.

Yeah it's pricy but try finding a similarly specked computer. It's going to be a $1500+ laptop. You're not going to find this kind of handheld performance for much cheaper. Honestly I think, especially for people who're looking to just ditch their gaming PC for handheld+dock only it's not that crazy. With the maxxed out Steam Deck you get a much slower chip, halve the memory and a lower resolution, smaller lower refresh rate but OLED screen for $250 less. Seems pretty fair to me.

Not going to lie, i just bought a Surface Pro for around this same price, and on first glance i like this better. Its got more horse power. Similar ports. Inferior screen, but a built in controller. I guess id just need to have it around and see how truly mobile it feels in practice. Im not going to pull out my surface and a controller to game when im in a hospital waiting room so currently i just use my phone to emulate PS2 games for that purpose. If this could replace that role it would hold a lot of value for me. Means it would be great for camping. Long road trips. Airplane rides. Just wish it had a port like the Surface that you can connect a dock into without taking up a thunderbolt port.

Wonder when companies will learn that putting AI on things actually doesn't help the consumer's view of it when you know, AI is taking said consumer's jobs at an insane pace. I already wasn't in the market for a $900 handheld, but with AI in the name I don't exactly feel GREAT about a purchase that helps to boost sales numbers for a trend that is ruining lives. i'm a big "vote with your wallet" person, and if they see AI makes products flop, they're gonna pull out from investing resources into it.

8" is too big for me. 7" is better. Sadly the 7" version has more downgrades over just a smaller screen and battery. Also a smaller SSD (512GB) WiFi 6e instead of 7.

I don’t think you understand the concept of portable gaming devices 😂. I mean sure get a GPU but if you are at a hotel or travel for work or laying in the bed etc you still won’t be able to play that baller GPU. There’s a reason these are so popular and so many companies make different portable devices as well as the PS vita and Switch being so popular these days. Also many people who own things like this or the Steamdeck and legion go etc these are almost like add on devices where you already own a full size PC but for some reason or another you want or need a portable device cuz you are busy or not at home etc.
