MSi's A620M-E Pro motherboard has dropped in price from $85 to $75 recently on newegg. And this makes it look very attractive on the surface. Though looking through MSI's website there are lots of misleading practices enacted here. Let's go through them in today's video.

One review I've read on some website was that this board is limited to 65W cpu, but it was never mentioned on MSI website.
@sassuki

What is mentionned on MSI's website is more than enough. And if you are such a newbie, let professionals build the computer for you, because they know that 9 phases CANNOT run 105W+ CPUs all-core at 100% without throttling if it doesn't want to hit 105°C+. This is physics! It is the same as saying, the motherboard is compatible with PCIe Gen5 SSDs, yet when you plug one, you should know that it will be throttled to Gen4 speed (or Gen3 speed for A520 for example). If you don't know that, don't blame the manufacturer for your ignorance, and let a professional build the computer for you! Besides, this motherboard can definitely run the X3D CPUs at full speed WHILE GAMING, even though they are advertised as 120W, because they never exceed 90W in games.

Yea MSI is weird, I recently bought an MSI mobo that comes with wifi ac. But, when it arrived it turns out they swapped the ac card with a rebranded mediatek wifi ax card. Nothing was mentioned about this swap on the MSI site. No complaints from me though, board works fine. Wasn't even planning on using wifi anyways 🤷

I'm still using old MSI B75M motherboard, yes the board is actually GREAT, but the inconsistency with RAM is insane, If I clean or swap component for whatever reason it won't boot back, I have to reseat RAM every single time, the only thing that could fix the issue is if I only use 2GB stick, while it had 4 slots, 2GB stick means I will only have 8GB of total RAM.

This is incorrect. If you're going to half support a CPU with a motherboard so that it can't run at full stock speeds that's false marketing. That CPU needs to run at the stock bare minimum if AMD is supporting this CPU on this chipset. Either MSI needs to block this CPU from being used or AMD needs to block the CPU from being used on this chipset. AMD is responsible for overseeing this as they sell the chipsets to all these board integrators. They are aware of what's going on and don't care if you blow up a motherboard with a CPU like that. This is also even more irresponsible from MSI and speaks volumes about their products.

@@IceBergs It’s pretty common for low end motherboards to not handle 16 core CPUs. Sure they should be more clear about it but if you buy a low end motherboard than realistically you should be buying a low end CPU as well. The opposite would be just as crazy buying a Godlike motherboard for 1000 bucks only to pair it with a low end CPU.

@@wertywerrtyson5529 It doesn't matter what you "Should" or "Shouldn't" be doing with these combinations. It's extremely unacceptable to state something is supported and completely functional when it clearly is not. Plenty of people will make this combo and experience premature death of a component because of it. AMD has a business to run and this type of behavior on its platform is negative for business. Why they haven't done anything about regulating this type of behavior is shocking to me. Instead of looking at this from a person experienced in tech who understands the layout, you need to start looking at these things from a novice point of view because what's common for you and me isn't for them. It's negative to PC building as a whole not just down to AMD/MSI. Reasons like this is why PC gets a bad rap

I have said this before, people paying this little for a motherboard should not be expecting the performance of a board that costs 20 % - 50% more. Credit to MSI for putting a disclaimer on their product page that clearly states performance will be impacted on higher wattage CPUs. The "as intended" comment is perhaps a bit misleading but the specs listed on the CPUs supported are simply the CPU specs as laid out by AMD, the TDP listed is the stock TDP of the CPU, they are not claiming the board will allow those frequencies or that TDP to be achieved. Perhaps they should state somewhere that all CPUs above (X)w will be locked to (X)w TDP. Boards like this are designed for users on a tight budget that just need something useable, good enough to get the job done. They are designed to be paired with lower tier CPUs. IMHO, they should be listed as not supporting anything above their TDP limits or at the very least, have all the CPUs that have a higher TDP listed in red with an * stating performance will be compromised. Regardless of that, I don't think the title "The Cheapest yet WORST A620 Motherboard yet!" is at all fair. The board is built to a price point, at that price point you can't expect more. When we get down to this price level the difference of just $5 makes all the difference, a heatsink on the VRMs for example. Thanks for stating that the board is perfectly adequate for it's intended use, HUB repeatedly failed to do so in it's reviews and lost a lot of credibility for it IMHO. I don't think the "misleading" info is at all intentional, very often the people building the sites and product pages have little to no contact with the people designing the boards. They get told it's compatible with all the same CPUs as XX model so they copy paste most of the info. Still not acceptable but hardly a sinister attempt to mislead. A simple informative email from reviewers to the manufacturer pointing out the issue is usually enough to get it resolved. Hell, I am not even a reviewer and when I sent a message to Gigabyte about incorrect information on one of their product pages it was fixed within days. When you call them out publicly like this they often take a defensive stance and then don't change the info for much longer. You have to understand, a manufacturer has many departments and when the PR guys have to step in it adds an extra layer of complication and delays. Far better to let it be handled discretely. Now, if they refuse to make the requested changes, then a more public rebuttal is warranted. Don't que off HUB, their review style has shifted to the sensational and clickbait a lot of late and their personal grudges against manufacturers has clearly colored their reviews in an unacceptable way. I have always enjoyed your content, please be careful about the direction you take. HUB may have more followers but it's practices for a time became highly subjective and were no longer as pure and informative as they should have been. They seem to have learned from it but I am still suspicious when I see a bad review from them which is not good. It's important to always keep the reviews objective. Kudos to MSI for producing a board for this price segment, some changes to the product page should clear up any confusion and illustrate clearly who this board is aimed at.

To be fair, the 7800X3D "120W TDP" CPU doesn't actually go past 90W for CPU power consumption AFIAK. Gamer's Nexus showed about 86W in power consumption (about the same as a 7600). While VRM cooling is pretty close to max specification, you could get some dirt cheap headsinks for a raspberry pi or from some old scrap motherboard + K5 Pro or thermal pads to compensate. As long as you can keep the VRMs cooled, and you can boot with your memory (definitely a gamble), I think this can go well with a 7800X3D. Please test it with a 7800X3D! I prefer a review focused on what the product is intended for rather than one stating the obvious of where it falls short then pretending it should have done better. You did it right by illustrating where this board fits and what it pairs well with 👍 People watching reviews need to be informed, someone looking to cheap out on the motherboard and pair this with a 7950x need to see that is a bad idea but likewise, those looking at a 7500f or equivalent/lower tier CPU also need to know it will do the job just fine. MSI do need to sort out the documentation so it properly matches across all sources.

Asus ROG B650E-E owner here. I got some Adata XPG 6000 Mhz DDR5 memory and up until the very latest bios I couldn't, straight up, run the 4 stick of ram at 6000Mhz, it'd only do it at 5800Mhz and rarely, but not rarely enough, it'd randomly decided to not post with the same RAM it always had until I basically removed all sticks bar 1, made sure the settings in Bios were the same and then I could, following 2-3 boots, get all the RAM back in. So memory stability, thanks to the X3D whoopsie, has been a fun thing even in the high end (not the top of the range with mine mind you but it's a ROG so it's under ASUS's premium brand).

With the VRM temp results: That's actually probably not what's happening here. What's happening, likely, is the 7700X only needs 90W periodically while the 7950X needs it constantly so spiking up down is no issue for the VRMs without any cooling but constant, pegged, 90W is where it runs into issues. I also have to question the sanity of anyone building a PC based on a 7950X and a A620M considering this is akin to strapping a solid rocket booster onto a donkey's arse. Like maybe in some very flung future where you can get both for under 10 euros it'd make sense but that's a decade or so in the future where the delta in performance lost will be (considering the likely progress until then) a few frames per second, realistically. The 7700X results are more important here as that's more realistic, the 7950x build, if it happens, within the next 2-3 years has to be someone who needs a PC right now doesn't wanna skimp on the CPU and GPU so they downgrade the motherboard to fit the budget they have under the understanding they'll flip the motherboard to a better one later. It doesn't make sense otherwise.

I think you have hit a very important nail on the head with this video. Misrepresenting the capabilities of a motherboard on official websites is misleading the consumer writ large, If you can't rely on basic information like what CPU you can install being right you have to ask what else is wrong. If you could cover a range of lower end motherboards to see which ones are basically lying about their capabilities and which aren't you'd be doing the community a great service. Well done for a spot on video.

MSI's statement on performance depending on CPU is not so far-fetched. All boards going down the price tiers will eventually not be able to cope with sustained maximum power loads and this has been true forever from low-power laptops to desktop motherboards. If we want to nitpick on this subject, the CPU itself will thermal and power throttle at stock settings with adequate, yet sensible cooling solutions and IMHO this is a core issue of recent Ryzen and Core-I where they put out parts that DEMAND from the system builder (which may be the user...) to go overboard on PSU, motherboard and cooling parts.

I was building a cheap new PC using this board and a 7600 CPU with a 6650 XT GPU. I was quite disappointed with the board for different reasons: the EZ-debug LEDs are confusing as they showed I had issues with the CPU and the RAM - I sent things back but the replacements showed the same issue - it turned out that the warning lights show up and then disappear after 30 seconds. Frustrating. The RAM slots have only one clip per slot which makes fitting the RAM more difficult. Most importantly though is the placement of the GPU on the board - it leaves me with about a 1cm (1/3 inch) gap between the GPU fans and the PSU. Then they put most of the connectors in this gap so there's now tonnes of wiring filling this tiny space. I tried a game out and the fans were at max and I could smell hot plastic - not impressed. After watching your video I'm not sure if it's the wiring being so close to the GPU, the GPU not getting enough cooling, the RAM or the M.2 card not having any cooling. Avoid.

I agree, not many people would go for such combo. But manufacturers should state that on product page. You made a board that work fine only with 65W CPUs? Fine, then support only 65W CPU and don't lie on product page and box. Even when not many will pair it today with power hungry CPU it can make problems later when someone after one or two gen decide to upgrade with cheap second hand first gen am5 cpu. I made mistake like that long time ago and that leave me with finger size hole in asrock board, that was before hard power limiting so board try to provide necessary power for CPU listed as supported. It wasn't :)

After getting an ASUS ROG STRIX B650-G and it having terrible coil whine, I tried an MSI B650 MPG CARBON WIFI and it was a nightmare to get stable. If you don't enable XMP, it defaults to overclocking the memory (6400->6600). If you don't enable memory context restore, it takes multiple minutes every time you boot and appears as if it has locked up entirely until it eventually starts up. The latched NVME slot has a heatsink that is almost impossible to remove easily. NVME compatibility is all over the place, I had to reorder the three drives many times until I found a combination that worked. The BIOS seems so fragile that I ended up having to clear the settings dozens of times, then reapply fan curves, enable XMP and boot priorities every single time. It was infuriating - I really don't know who to choose for a motherboard now. I will say though, it is stable for the time being. I just hope this isn't the norm for motherboards going forward.

I've thought about pulling it out and selling for a low price even though it works just fine and get something from Asrock. With all that said, it posted right away with my Trident memory and 7600X, though it needed a ton of work in the bios so everything would work good. Above this temp, VRMs goes toasty especially on sustained all-core workloads. So the best cpu you can use on this mobo is ryzen 7900 non-x. If you can buy a 7950x, you should be able to buy a mid or high tier mobo, then this is not for you, this is a budget device to built a budget pc. It will be perfectly ok and I plan to do it myself, but I personally will use it as a stepping stone to some B650 board after 1-2 years of usage. Like, I don't need fancy functions, but I definitely need PBO and Curve Optimizer, which this board (and all A620 ones) doesn't have, unfortunately.
