I'm glad to see you mention the Daiwa BG spinning reel. I bought two in the spring and used them extensively this year with good results. I own a number of Shimano SLX rods since they went on clearance earlier this fall to make way for the new line. They are very good rods. I think they are right at or slightly stiffer than their ratings, though. I have a M that feels more like a MH and a MH that feels more like a Heavy.

Another great gear review. I have to agree with Matt on the Shimano Miravel which you reviewed last month. It’s an amazing finesse spinning reel. I also like my SLX combo which I picked up earlier this year along with the mojo bass rod to pair with my Abu Garcia Revo S. One glaring omission, Tatula XT. I love my 7’3” M and very good 7’3” MH. They do not match my GLXs, Ex Prides, or Poison Adrenas, but they have filled needs beautifully for only $100 each. I use them every time out.

The $200 combo has always been my target as an avid fisherman. I love Dobyns rods. I own two Fury rods and they are fantastic. However, what separates Dobyns is their warranty and support. I broke a rod tip (my mistake). Called up Dobyns, talked to a real person right away (based in Texas). Paid $80 for a new Fury with their replacement program.

1:13 - Matt insists there is no cheating the price point this time. 3:05 - Matt cheats the price point, as Tim adopts his best "surprised / not surprised" expressions. Agree to being surprised that he did it with spinning gear, though. Great job guys; I found the previous St. Croix Bass-X rods to be tip-heavy, but I may give this new version another look. I fish with the Daiwa BG; great spinner, with the minor quirk that the bail does not "click" when fully opened. It takes some getting used to, but I really like the reel. The Fury is rock-solid; I have a spinner that serves me very well. Thanks again for everything you do; I think your Guides are invaluable for anglers of all skill and experience levels. People should know, the new Tatula XT line is REALLY good for the $100 rod price point. Matt & Tim probably haven't gotten time with them yet but I'm sure they'd love them. Also, if someone wants to push just a few dollars past $200, the Curado rods are a massive step up from something like SLX or even Dobyns Fury. With a $100 reel and the TW discount it would be close to $200.

Glad to see you guys really branching out of Shimano stuff. In previous years I felt like it was just a Shimano commercial but these last 2 videos haven’t been like that. A great spinning reel that I’m surprised hasn’t been mentioned is the pflueger president xt. You can get them for 70-80 bucks and I’d put them against any of my reels under 150.

It’s a two sided issue, branching out yet sticking to only backing what they believe is good quality for the price. If only a couple of companies make good quality gear at any given price point then there’s no reason to endorse subpar stuff in the name of diversity. I’m not saying other companies don’t offer good stuff but these guys have to purchase and give a thorough testing to anything they back. It’s just not feasible to test every rod or reel in any given price point even if they were given for free.

@@richardbossman9875 true but it’s up to us to decide if the choices are influenced by sponsorship $ or actual preference no offense Tactical Bassin. It used to be 9/10 Shimano. Shimano had some great gear, I’ve used a lot of it. But some of it is subpar imo compared to gear in the same price range so a get a couple red flags when it’s all the same brand and some of it is meh. For example, I’ve owned all 3 different types of SLX casting reels. The DC, XT, and standard and I’ve had serious issues with all of them. I’d take any other reel in their price point over them with exception of a duckett.

Agreed. Their recommendations seemed heavily biased toward Shimano reels in the past. I've had good service out of Daiwa reels spinning (BG) and baitcasting (Fuego, Tatula CT, Tatula SV).

The SLX XT for about $30 more has the advantage of an external knob for adjusting reel. A bit easier for beginners, at least at first, that having to take off the side plate to access settings. But for some reason the XT is impossible to find.

Hey fellas appreciate the guide - you said the Shimano SLX will "handle" jig hook baits but how is it for things like hudds really? I'm looking for that budget rod that will actually excel at the soft baits with single hooks but most rods around this pricepoint seems to be trying to "do it all" meaning they don't excel at any one point.

I know you matched up the Dobyns with the Miravel but if you go to tackle wharehouse you can get an Abu Garcia Revo X for $80 keeping it under $200 so with a spool of power pro 20lb braid you’re right at $200.

Is there a meaningful difference between slx and slx A rods?

The only two I've been able to directly compare fishing with so far are the 6'10" M models, the newer A model is about 6% lighter and is better balanced in hand. Still has that crisp tip action for working jerkbaits and that softer mid section to keep the trebles pinned. I never had issues with blank twisting on the standard SLX models I own, but the Diaflash wrapping is still a nice feature to have trickle down to this price point. The rod isn't leaps and bounds better than the first gen model, but it is an appreciable difference and a definite step up.

Revo beast 40 is a amazing real. Super sturdy, smooth and long casting. Way better than curado k and tatula 200hd. I have the highspeed and I like it as a faster option than my tranx 300a.

I see you linked the older SLX rod. You like that better than the new version?

We like them equally so far, just had to spend a lot of time with them before we fully commit to something new. We've spent the most time with the SLX A swimbait rods and they're absolutely amazing for the money! So far all the models have followed suit. If you're trying to decide which way to go, you can't go wrong.

@@tacticalbassin Appreciate it. I have a friend who's looking for a cheaper all-around rod. Personally, I'm more an Expride/Zodias guy myself, if we're talking about Shimano. Speaking of Savage Gear, I do have the Black Ops. Great rod!

What is main difference between expride 6’10 and Curado 6’10? Is it just weight?

Weight and overall sensitivity. Both have an excellent action.

Are all the bass x casting rods tip heavy? I have a 7,1 medium heavy fast action and it’s very tip heavy

I found this with the earlier versions; they had blue logos on them. I cannot speak to the new chartreuse logo models.

@@austinhall485 I have heard that their actions are a click softer than many other brands; i.e. a St. Croix Fast is like most others' moderate-fast. I love the company and hope to own one or more of their rods some day; I just haven't found a spinner that balances well for me...yet.

So the first Bass X rods are basically just first gen Mojo Bass rods with a different logo. The first generation SCII blanks were tip heavy. The SCIII Mojo Bass is way better. The extra $20 is worth it.
