Thanks guys. Reels have come so far in quality it does amaze me. A reel that cost $100 today is head and shoulders above any reel of yesturyear. I watch the pros fishing and very few throw the $500+ rods and reels. I understand sponsors and pushing thier lines of gear. They seem to due rather well on mid range gear.why drive a Ferrari when a Mustang goes faster than you will drive.

I felt the same way about the high end gear before I got it in my hands and used it for a time. The quality, weight and efficiency of the gear makes it hands down worth the cost if you can afford it. The smoothness of the drag, gearing and sensitivity makes it so you don't have to worry about it. I had a buddy pick up a few of my poles the other day and he was like, "They're so light,". My first car was a '74 VW Bus, it did 70mph and I dug it. Now I drive a Toyota SUV that does 70+ and guess how much smoother the ride is.

I just scored a brand new Lew’s KVD LFS Reel for $89.99 Normally its $150 but it was a display model sitting in a glass case. Never spooled or used. Weighs 7.2 oz, has 10 bearings, external lube port, and 20 pounds max drag. It’s literally in perfect condition and I’m pumped I hit that deal.

I have shimano reels from the $99 SLX up to the $250 curado 70 mgl, every step up in price is also a step up in quality. I See a difference in my curado 150 mgl and my curado 70 mgl, the 70 is smoother , no doubt. It is not a waste of money to move up, there is a difference.

Not sure who buys any reel much less $300-700 reel and fishes it for 3-5 yrs. People don't even keep cars that long anymore and they cost way more than that and don't even get me started on iPhones. So I focus on those 100-150 reels that get that new trickle down tech each and every upgrade. Those are work horses on 95% of all boats in the world. And I can afford to replace them each and every time they get an upgrade. Great and informative video and I like the format you have on presenting them to us. Two thumbs up.

Not sure if anyone mention this yet, but the KVD reel is a steal right now. It's already 25% off. With the additional 15% TW sale and the $25 off next TW order voucher, you're pretty much getting a $150 reel for $70. NOTE: you only get one voucher per order so buy the reels separately when buying more then one reel.

#TacticalBassin Loved the whole series you ran, actually every guide you touched base on. I have a question, mainly Shimano but a slight touch on Daiwa. Anyone that wants to chime in, feel free to give me your opinions too. In your opinions, is the addition of DC, worth the 80 dollar price hike? I feel like having DC might hinder the ability to cast MY way, where as non DC leaves everything up to the angler. I absolutely love my NEW Tatula 100, feels wonderful. The question here is, is a Daiwa 100 sized reel "weaker" than a Shimano 200 sized reel, with same gear ratios? My concern here is throwing heavier 2.5+oz lures.

I'm wanting to check them out. I've yet to try them or Bates new reels. Both look great snd 13 has great reviews. My buddy had the cheaper priced green reel they make and it casts so far. Took my coastal to outcast it. Peopke day they're not great in salt they were made for but I been rocking one for years beating the banks and its still my go to. Like my zillion as well but that coastal 150 palms smaller than any reel I've held. Only thing comes close is a Shimano where they're broader and lower than most. But not my coastal. It outcasts my zillion and the coastal has the pinion rod that runs all the way to the tensioner button. Zillion has a bearing on the same side with the pinion rod only long enough to hold the bearing and stay in place. Doesn't make sense.

The Curado 150 MGL is probably my current favorite of all reels. It's basically a SLX with Xship SVS infinity (with 6 brake shoes) and of course MGL the other features I don't really get caught up in. For strength and small size you can't beat a Bantam MGL. I have the JDM Zillion SV and it's great. One reel that disserves more attention is the Tatula 80, great little power finesse but it'll handle your typical 1/2oz plus trailer chatterbaits too I pitch light plastics currently with it. The Tatula 80 even though is labeled as Hyper drive it doesn't include double pinion support according to the diagram but I still haven't ripped mine apart to find out, with aluminum side plate at the handle it's arguably not needed

OK, so, can anyone explain how Kastking can go from a $70 price point on the Zephyr BFS, that eats 6lb diameter line between the spool and the side plate gap, to a $200+ price point on the Kestrel? I am sorry, but, until they prove they can make a lower price point reel work properly, I won't be sending out that much coin for a reel from them. I own a Spartacus baitcast reel from them, and although it works well, I had to modify the braking system by shimming it closer to the spool with some thin washers to get it to function acceptably, and the Zephyr had a weak braking system as well, but couldn't be shimmed and between that and the line eating issue I returned it.
@tacticalbassin
@tacticalbassin 10 ай бұрын
The Zephyr was discontinued, presumably over this issue. The Kestrel is a completely different reel but yes, we also cringed over the price for a while. So far so good 🤞 We're not suggesting it's better than the Curado BFS, just making sure people have an alternative to try because it's drastically better than most of the incoming BFS reels from major brands trying to jump on the bandwagon without actually building a new reel from the ground up.

Excellent spread of options there. I, being new to the bass'n, appreciate the guidance on all levels. Question, though, when you say some reels don't hold up over time, what is the general failing point(s) of the reel? Is it the bearings? Physical damage to the handle or casing?
@philipfalco7304
@philipfalco7304 10 ай бұрын
Matt explained it well. Since inferior products are used to build the reel from bearings, braking system, frame material and gears you'll notice ineffective casting control, grinding in the gears and could lead to a really bad experience on the water. I've learned a long time ago to just Stick with Shimano or Daiwa and you'll rarely have a problem. For the most part, you get what you pay for.

Any thoughts on the abu revo sx and stx gen 5? ….. due to fit and feel I’ve settled into shimano and abu. Shimano slx mgl 70 and curado mgl 150 are my go to single hook baits, they make pitching so easy at any weight and can bomb casts when needed. For cranking though I like the abu reels. I wanted so bad to be a Shimano guy… and I didn’t want to like Diawa… I know exactly what he means when he says the sv wasn’t intended to be a finesse reel but it can do it. I got a Tatula ct well today I put a very light weight lure on it literally never even dialed it in turned the breaks halfway down wiggled the spool til it hardly moved if moved at all and started sending it with EASE! I SMACKED A BRANCH WHILE CASTING BARELY HAD A BACKLASH…. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to cut the line out of the reel and respool it.. nope barely had to pick out a backlash… this isn’t my first Diawa reel or my only… reminder I WANTED TO HATE DIAWA… I absolutely love them.

Made the mistake of buying a daiwa tatula 200 a couple years ago. Sounds like a baseball card in a bike wheel if you put any sort of power behind a cast. I've literally tried to pay someone to take it, but my fishing buddies just laugh and pass. I've oiled it out of the box because that's apparently too much to ask from the factory (shimano oil ofcourse, because ya get none from daiwa), had a local shop look at it with no luck, experienced friends try, etc. Sticking with shimano... never should have strayed honestly.

Tim and Matt you guys should try YGK X8 Upgrade braided line for casting distance and its smoothness!! This brand is so popular in Japan and China. Casting a bait with less air resistance, your casting distance would go up to 250 -300 feet! Incredible smooth JDM braided line.

I'm sure Daiwa has amazing reels but I've been a Shimano guy since I was a little kid. My favorites that don't break the bank are the 150 and 70 curado mgl. I use them on Zodias and Expride with zero complaints. I have a few rods from various companies that are technique specific but day in and day out Shimano is my favorite.

For the cost of a curado 70mgl ypu can buy a zillion, alderberan, metanium, and so on. Order from Japan. Places like digitaka or Japan tackle. Ypu get much better deals and they arrive in a few days.

@@ETuss713 the price break is much bigger on the Shimano reels than on the Daiwa (except for the Steez) but also keep in mind that the JDM Zillion is slightly different than the US version. It has an aluminum main gear instead of brass. Pinion is still brass. Also the JDM Metanium A had a slightly shallower spool. Not sure about the Metanium B.

I grabbed a slx 70 mgl earlier this year when they had a 15% off sale and wow! I totally agree with everything matt said about this reel! Punches way out of its price range! I've got 2 each of the Curado 70 MGL and SLX 70 MGL. Not worth the extra money, IMO. You can't tell the difference between them on the water. I have two Zodias 6'10"M rods, one with the Curado and one with the SLX. Without looking at the reels, I couldn't really tell you which was which.

What would you recommend for shallow sqaurebills? The Curado MGL 70 or the Daiwa SV 70? The higher IPT of the Shimano has me leaning toward Daiwa. Thanks y’all!
@philipfalco7304

I Can't speak for the Daiwa but I have the Curado MGL 70HG and it's fine for shallow squarebills. It's 29 I.P.T. may sound like a lot but with the shallow spool when you cast the I.P.T. goes down the further you cast. I've had no problem with resistance or running too fast with mine and with the faster gear ratio you get your bait back quick therefore giving you more cast's in a day. The handle is nice and long also. To each his own.

For 99% of what us Americans use a spinning rod for when bass fishing, the setup you have is perfect. The Curado BFS (and its JDM SLX sibling and Scorpion predecessor) are really in an interesting spot. They have a ton of application overlap with the 70 MGLs the biggest difference being that they are more controlled with shorter casts thanks to the magnetic brakes. They can work with slightly lighter lures, provided that you can find the right rod, but they kinda choke on the really light stuff.

I basically keep every reel in between 200-300$ and every rod 150-350$. BTW if you buy a Curado BFS and put 6lb Flouro on it, ill save you the trouble. Just put the reel on 4. I just cant spend 700-1000 on a rig. I mean i can but i really dont want to. Maybe i will give it a shot once my 450-600$ rigs start breaking. I dont think people understand the difference flouro makes whether its 15 lb or 5lb. Ive caught so many fish on flouro, even on baits that you dont think of as flouro baits compared to them on braid.
