I’ve been shopping around for a family overlander for camping adventures with the kids. I’ve been trying to decide between the 90 series and 2nd gen Pajero but went for the 90 series. Just picked it up today. Love her already 😊

The gen 3 Pajero would be a better comparison for the 90 series. 1999-2005. 3.5L and 3.8L V6 petrol options. There were diesel options as well, a few 2.8L TD but mostly the 3.2L. The same 3.2L (with various upgrades over the years) was still available up until the Pajero ceased production around 2021. That's a 30+ year production life. Extremely reliable engine. 1 million KM on the 3.2L isn't unheard of. The petrol models regularly get over 500k km without major issues. The 'Pajero Sport' has been around since 1996, but was called a Challenger in Australia up until recent years. It was always called a Pajero Sport in other markets (or Montero Sport in Latin countries). Gen 3 petrol can be had for around $5k. Diesel gen 3 around $7k-$10k. Any higher and better off getting a gen 4. The gen 4 is essentially the same as a gen 3. Same body etc. just with upgrades over the years. Both mechanically and cosmetically.

I personally think the gen 2 is a better competitor to the 90 prado. Gen 3 are unibody unlike most 4wd and isn't just a right comparison

Looking at buying a 1998 Prado 90 series with the 3.0 diesel. How does it compare to modern SUVs in terms of cargo capacity? Also I plan to take it off reading on a regular basis as I have land out in the country, is it as capable as an 80 series LandCruiser?

should probably do some more research before making these videos good start and gives people a rough idea but need to go into more detail on the important things. so i’ll do a quick run down pajero, 2.8td slow known for blowing heads by easier to change but the 2.5 is reliable but is even slower, petrols thirsty but can easily get to 400000km on both 3.0 and 3.5 try and get a 3.5 as better fuel and more power trouble free stay about from dohc as not much more power and less reliable and harder to work on. prado 3.0td slow and known for blowing heads as well but the 3.4 is a great known engine and will do 500000+easily prado wins for engine. autos both pretty similar work of for a 1990s auto but manuel is definitely better in both pajero manuel box is bigger and stronger so pajero wins transmission, tranfer case prado a chain driven so can’t buy reduction gears and only has h,hLand LL, pajero is gear driven so can buy reduction gears and has the option of 2wd, 4h, 4hL, 4LL so pajero wins in transfer case. diffs toyota is smaller and weaker good for ground clearance but known to break, pajero has massive diffs which means they don’t break but you get hung up a lot of them but on the top of line 2.5 and 3.0 they have a factory rear diff lock so pajero wins suspension, pajero has torsion front and coil rear so front is rough to ride in and rear suspension has a 2 bush style lower trailing arm meaning flexes good but not great, prado has a strut in the front which is comfortable and coil rear with a 4 link which means flex is heaps better then pajero so praod wins suspension, tyres, pajero can fit 33s legally and easily with a 2 inch lift and can put 15 rims so easier to find second hand rims and tyres, prado can’t fit 33s legally only 32s and can’t fit 33s in 2 inch without bashing guards and can’t fit 15 inch rims so pajero wins for tyres and rims towing both can legally tow 2.5tonne payload pajero has a 750kg payload and prado has 1000kg so prado wins, fuel capacity, Pajero has 90l and prado has 150L so prado wins, saftey features, prado has driver and passenger airbags on half the models, most or all have abs and gxl and up and 4pot front brakes meaning it stops great, pajero not many have driver and passenger airbags was only nl models but most had a recall and where scrapped so prado wins, interior, pretty much the same on both, both have rear ac praod has 8 seats pajero has 7, similar riding position can adjust steering column in pajero can’t on prado, top of line 2.5 and 3.0 pajero has sunroof and suspension seats, stereo is in a better position on the prado can’t easily put a touch screen and can rear the screen where as pajero is to low, both have electric windows electric mirrors, central locking, praod gets a remote locking pajero is just key, same buttons and dials in dash in both going to be a tie both for pros and cons, steering prado uses a rack and feels heaps nicer to drive where has pajero uses a box prado wins second hand parts, only wreakers parting out prados out so parts are arojnd but get expensive quick where as more private people are parting out pajeros so parts are cheaper
