Darn Toughs are amazing. Injinji liners under Darn Toughs is the anti-blister secret sauce. Even in warm weather. Injinji by themselves are frankly not very durable. But under Darn Toughs they will seemingly last forever.

Key is Injinji LINER with Light Weight Darn Tough. Works great. Both companies make thicker socks and that’s not needed for most 3 season trips. I’ll wear that combo right through river sand streams and they dry out about 10-15 minutes later. Paired with Altra Lone Peaks.

It frankly mystifies me that huge companies like Osprey and Gregory don’t design and market a line of functional and lightweight backpacks designed for (and maybe by) thru-hikers. With their wholesale buying power they easily could make a sub $200 pack constructed of something like X-PAC with side water bottle pockets, a large mesh back pocket, an adjustable torso and hip belt, large functional hip belt pockets, and make a killing. And why stop there? They could do a similar thing to daypacks and fanny packs.

I think the reason big companies don’t make packs out of the expensive fabrics is because the materials are so expensive, they would need to charge way more than cottage companies to still make a profit. They sell all their gear through retail stores to a mass audience. They need to have adjustable frames and belts that are heavier than a custom fit pack and depend on a random store salesman to sell it, then make their profit plus the retailer mark up. They would have to charge way more for a pack that was heavier than a comparable custom cottage pack, and try to sell that to gear geeks. At the same time depend on some REI salesman, who may or may not, know the difference between DCF and nylon to sell it to an average customer.

Not sure if you all have seen it but I recently got a Osprey Levity “super ultra light “ pack as they market it. It’s about 1lb 12oz ( don’t quote me on that). Super comfortable! Surprisingly lightweight and seems to be durable but that’s still to be seen. I had wanted a ULA ohm 2.0 for about a year and before starting the Sheltowee I went to get it, tried it on and was just overall dissatisfied, the guy at Quest pointed the Osprey Levity out to me and I couldn’t get over the weight and comfort. For an Osprey pack I’d say it’s extremely simple also, 2 functional side pockets that have these ergonomic holes so you can face your water bottles towards you, so you can grab them comfortably with the pack on, that was a big selling point also for me. I had done a lot of research on packs and hadn’t and still haven’t found much on it, it’s a very underrated pack in my opinion.

I did a multi-day trip to Isle Royale last year with a friend. He had the Jetboil flash stove and I had the BRS-3000. Side by side there was no comparison on how efficient and quickly the Jetboil boiled water compared to the BRS. He was eating his meal by the time my water pot was just starting to boil. Yes, it’s a little heavier, but I love how everything nests inside. It’s not “ultra-lite” but it’s going to be in my pack for this years 2022 PCT journey!

@@bionicdan1959 I have an ultralight setup with a brs 3000 and a titanium mug for bikepacking over weekends. If I would be out and about for longer than 2-3 days I would always use the Jetboil despite being double the weight, because the brs 3000 is so incredibly inefficient and wasteful with gas cartridges. You need almost double the gas to heat up the same amount of water.

I've got one pair of Darn tuff socks and it will probably be the only pair. My feet sweat when walking and the darn tuff seem to hold in that sweat and never dry out on the bottoms. Now I have cold feet and hands, so heat should be a problem, but when wearing those socks, I agree, something is amiss for me. I know they are wool, but they don't keep my feet warm when constantly wet from my own sweat. I don't even like them for the cold months because my feet still get wet then cold. My boots were partly to blame but even with ventilated boots, by feet get wet. I bet yours were too. I changed back to cotton for short walks and Wiggy's socks for colder months. (Not camping, just two or more mile walks.) Thanks for all the work and time you put into making these vids. It is truly appreciated by your followers. You give very good advice and reviews.

Regarding the trail designs kit you got. For a little bit of extra money you can get the sidelinder where everything fits inside the cook pot. This makes a huge difference in terms of compactness. If you go with the titanium version you can also get add-ons that turn it into a very effective twig stove. The great thing about the cone is not only that it acts as a windscreen. It also helps to focus the heat at the bottom of the pot so you get a faster boil time than you would just using a windscreen with the same pot and burner.

Great point on the Caldera. I've had that on my wishlist since I when I got into geeking out about alky stoves. I'd never ever considered the bulk of it until now. I'm sure it's still very efficient and functional, but I'm scratching it off my list after seeing how big it is. Don't get to use alcohol stoves very often out here in the dry mountain west anymore anyways because of the increased fire risks. Now gonna have to consider that Optimus for fresh/gourmet style cooking which I often do on trips with my wife. Been using the old MSR WindPro 2 when I want wider flame for skillet cooking but it's a bit bulky and twice the weight of that Optimus. It's still my go-to winter stove though. Atmos is still a fine pack that carries loads really well and comfortably. I just got annoyed with having to pry the hipbept apart to get it around my waist every time I went to put it on.

Love the Spiguyver stove. I've made a couple. I am currently using the version that uses the top of the can for the inside piece. The can's rim makes it a lot sturdier when you put your pot on it. I too use aluminum foil for a windscreen. We've chatted about the injinji before. Great socks, but I wear them because I typically wear toe shoes (daily & hiking). My regrets? The Sawyer mini, I'm waiting for it to fail so I can justify replacing it. A pocket chainsaw instead of getting a decent folding saw. It works and cuts well, just it's just more difficult keeping the piece of wood braced while cutting it. It's best for felling standing dead, not for processing. An impulse buy 32° sleeping bag - 32 was it's limit rating, not comfort and I didn't check the size. It's better for a small adult, not an overweight, broad shouldered guy like myself. I also don't like the color combination. The pattern displayed was the inside color (bright orange & black) not the outside color that I was expecting it to be. The outer shell was bright blue. I'm not a fan of blue for most camping stuff. It doesn't do too bad as a top quilt in my hammock for 50° or warmer weather. I might remove the zipper and turn it inside out. I should have used the $$ and bought an inexpensive puffy blanket instead for a warm weather top quilt in the colors I want.

CTUG ( Chicken Tramper Ultralight Gear ) makes great gear. I have the 25 liter day pack matched with their 4 liter fanny pack. It makes a great Ultralight set for camping here in Florida. I got one of the Original Grayls ( 15.7 oz empty ) when they 1st came on the market. Used it one time and filed it in the back of my junk drawer. The weight was a negative factor along with the amount of filtered water per use. It and other filters were replaced with the BeFree filter. The BeFree advantage , light weight , large water capacity and packs small. Gas stoves are nice but a long time ago I went back to my original choice of alcohol or wood. Both are quiet unlike the ( Misnamed ) Whisper lite or Pocket Rocket types.

Nice video John! That's what's great about all gear choices, they're all subjective! I would def fight ya on those stove choices but again it's how you're looking at them. I have three different canister stoves, including the BRS-3000 and an original Pocket Rocket, a plethora of homemade alcohol stoves, a Dragon Fuel stove and a Trail Designs Ti-Tri Sidewinder twig/Esbit/alcohol stove. The Trail Designs is by-far my favorite. Yes, it has bulk. But I use most of the space in the plastic container to fill with fuel, a lighter, matches, a spoon, etc.. The container doubles as a beverage cup and a meal cup (there are two pieces). I suggest you try that stove. It is the most efficient, quickest alcohol stove ever tested, plus it has two height settings, i.e. temperature settings, which is uncommon in twig/Esbit/alcohol stoves.

I have an Osprey Atmos 65 and a couple of popular cottage company packs. My Osprey is heavier but the design makes it feel lighter and much more comfortable than the others. It’s like comparing a Lexus to a Pinto for me! Of course I haven’t tried all of the cottage company backpacks but I’m hesitant to buy another one based on my experience.

Geez I considered getting a lot of these things that you regret but for one odd reason or another haven't gotten them. Considered Darn Toughs (Did get some for my daughter but not for me) Considered the Grayl, just seemed to big and bulky! Considered other stoves including the Pocket Rocket but have stayed with my BRS! I don't have anything I REALLY regret buying but I did buy a Kammok Kuhli tarp that I wish I would have gotten a bigger version of. I should've went all out on something BIG & lightweight for that!!

Another: bought a pair of Altra Lone Peak 4.5's (as every thru-hiker raves about them). And while I do like their wide toe box and gaiter traps, they offer like, ZERO toe protection. I found out the hard way that I don't pick up my feet so readily on longer hikes, and especially on night hikes. Let's just say I almost thought I was gonna lose a toenail after one night of stubbing my toes multiple times with zero protection from my shoes. I definitely went out and bought a shoe with better toe protection after that!

I regret buying the sea to summit x-brew coffee dripper. It's heavy, the filter sieve is too fine so you basically need to stir the ground coffee all the time. I wish I had known about that optimus stove being able to simmer really well when I was still shopping for a stove. It’s really hard to find a backpacking stove that will do that. Almost every test I’ve seen online was just people seeing how fast they’ll boil water and how much long they will last on fuel. But when you’re trying to simmer a meal a lot of those do not turn down very far and you end up burning your food. That small burnt spot will ruin the flavor of your whole meal. Lol. I got an msr pocket rocket deluxe that simmers really well but I dont like how big it is. I also found an $8 stove very similar to the brs that actually simmers better than anything else I’ve found.

Hey buddy how's it going. This was a good one. The one thing that I regret is back when I could wear shoes and socks I went out and bought a pair of hiking shoes & sock cuz my buddy one wanted me to go on a 10-mile hike with him. That was one bad decision I made. I got the worst blister on my toes. My buddy was saying it's because of my wide feet & my toes being straight across & very fat & wide. The shoe rub through the socks & blister to where it started to bleed. When we got off the trail the first thing I did was got barefooted 👣real fast. My foot was very wide & my toes was big then but not as fat & wide as my toes are now & my foot wasn't extremely wide as it is now. My lil toe was very very sore for months behind that. I ended up throwing those shoes a way immediately.

Nice list the good thing about so many options your bound to find what works for you. With the Osprey I'm surprised you didn't go with the Exos it's 2lbs without the brain and just under 2.5 with the brain. They make good packs but you ended up with a good one for you. My Vaude backpack is my biggest gear mistakes and it's mostly because I didn't get properly sized for my pack when I started backpacking. It's a great pack but could be so much better if it fit me better. Classic beginner mistake I know but every pack since that first one has fit me so well so lesson learned.

Bought the Osprey Lumina backpack... was thinking "ok it's really light, and less pockets" (ya know, more of the style YOU tend to prefer) ...and then once I took it out on a hike, I realized that the mesh padding that's used on the shoulder straps is a lot different than that used on my Osprey Aura backpack (which is my go-to). Unfortunately after just one hike with it, I had to return it to REI as the mesh material on the straps just rubbed my shoulders RAW. I always hike in a tank top (since I'm down in good ol' HOTTER THAN HELL Georgia) so this bag just wasn't gonna work for me. Disappointing. I was really hoping it woulda been a good one.

It’s a shame you never used your Caldera Cone - I use the Fusion Ti-Tri - having the //wonderful// windscreen/heat capture //and// the ability to use it as a gassifying wood burner is rather awesome. Some day I’ll make you an altoid stove which uses three fuels your choice. It’s small light super easy to use. The Grayel filter is heavy. I only use it to filter. I had Giardiasis once in my youth. Not a fun time at all. I filter, filter, filter all my water. Did I say filter? Yes filter water. I even drink my filtered water through a filter for the third filter. Omgosh - I am going to tell you here, but I am embarrassed myself on this one, I spent Covid-19 money on the stove of my dreams - well both of them and the cook kit! (So embarrassed)... Firebox Nano and 5in both in Ti. Omg they are good stoves. I love Steve and Family and the company. But I don't LOVE the stoves FOR ME and my use. I already gave the Nano away. (So embarrassed) I have a VanLifer friend that'll probably get the other one in the spring. I'm still a daily alcohol stove user! (Incidentally I am allergic to propane and iso butane is a mix of butane and propane). I currently use a Toaks siphon stove for coffee n morning eggs. Charcoal outside or woodstove inside for porridge and am a huge Thermal pot method user! Tents: years ago I bought a NON RETURNABLE $1100 Playa Dome tent for car camping and use on my Off-grid Property. (Shaking head and rolling my eyes) couldn't set it up alone, free range cattle stepped on the rebar stakes that actually held it down and the wind blew it off a cliff. No real windows and no floor freaked me out in Arizona with my fears of snakes n rodents and coyotes and....lol! Okay my costly mistakes are out in the open. Edit to add: and on my attempted Thru hike of the AT in 2011. At my first pack shake down I gave up my No Name Backpack from Central America and replaced it with a $300 name brand --- mistake. Never could get the comfort and features back
