Love my DCF tarp from Dutchware! 12' with doors! I waited for a Black Friday sale and saved $50! That tarp shaved over a pound and a half off my weight! I fold it up and wrap an ass pad around it to protect it on the outside of my pack. (Gotta fold it up tight though, or the ass pad won't close) I also have the helinox 0. While there are people who bust my chops about it, I'm always the most comfortable guy sitting around at camp. One guy I met at a shelter this past summer said it was "dumb weight", but in the morning as I was chillin' and enjoying my coffee with a great view, he conceded that it must be awesome to do that. I can't always put my hammock where the best views are, but I can bring that chair anywhere. OH! One thing I haven't seen you mention: The Emberlit Fireant. I only boil water at camp so I really don't need the gas stove and fuel tank. I got the titanium Fireant for $75 (I think) and it comes in at a whopping 3 ounces! The fuel squares smell horrific, so. I double bag them - barely smell them!

Number one for me has to be a down underquilt. I got a relatively pricey one from ENO years ago ($300 US), but I still have it, and it has given me the warmest and most comfortable sleep I have ever had outdoors. I've also more recently realized that it works as a super packable and lightweight overquilt when sleeping on the ground with a pad, which makes for a very cool modular setup where I can bring a hammock + bivy setup for an extremely versatile kit that's still surprisingly light.

I LOVE my Amok Draumr transverse hammock system! It really was not THAT expensive (about 550 for XL hammock, tarp, and zero degree air mattress). The entire system is engineered to work together and it includes everything you need except a quilt, including bug net. The tarp tie outs are integrated into the system with velcro attachments so when you take it down, your tie outs stay attached and rolled up. It even comes with GOOD stakes and the tarp stuff sack has a stake pocket for them. The tie outs have built in adjusters, the hammock can be adjusted to sit up or lay flat and you can even side sleep in it. I challenge any "ground sleeper" to try one and say they get a better night sleep on the ground.

So far, EVERYTHING, I’ve picked up from Fjallraven has never failed or let me down. I have like 2 edc backpacks, one is the Raven 28. The most amazing school/work backpack I’ve ever had in my entire life. I have a galaxy of accessories & whatnot from Fjallraven. My Fjallraven wardrobe is slowly growing too. I almost live in my Relaxed Shorts. Insanely comfortable. I also put Darn Tough thru the ringer too. I worked the hell out of a pair of darn toughs. Took me a year & a half of damn near wearing them everyday, washing them prob 1-2 a week, & finally a wear hole formed on the ball area of my foot. Not only that, I just haven’t done it yet, but I get to replace them for free, how about that..worth every penny!!Fjallraven for sure falls into the- cry once, buy once, happy for a lifetime-category. & one thing I feel U mite have left out, is good gear lasts longer & stays out of the landfill too. Less waste. Ty sir, outstanding video. Love U 2 guys. I am subscribed to both of U’r channels.

without a doubt my favorite unboxing bar none was my EE Revelation 10 degree. It's so rare these days to be so satisfied with an item straight out of the box. It was in my opinion way better than I expected and now 5 years later it looks like its brand new - full loft still and very accurate to temperature. If you look at the weight of your older one, then mine, and compare that to the newest versions with the exact same cut and fabric you'll see that the newest are a bit heavier. It's that way because they keep reevaluating and adjusting the fill based on feedback. There is just no other company making something this solid in quilts or bags. PS camp chairs separate them from us. Peace to all in the new year.

I bit the bullet on a Dyneema and spent $450 on a camo one without doors because it would have been over 500 dollars with doors and they don't have the green fabric available until sometime next year. Needless to say it dropped 1.5 lbs off my weight and I'm happy with it. I was finally able to try it out last week at Hansons Point.

It’s very unfashionable but I just bought an Optimus Svea. It’s my second one as I had one when I was a soldier. When it started to leak (after 20 years!) I eBay’d it as I didn’t know there was a service kit available. I’ve tried Trangia and butane stoves but I prefer the bomb proof nature of the Svea. Petrol can be found anywhere (it works fine on unleaded), one fill is good for 3-4 days, it works just as well in cold weather (unlike butane) and burns well even when it’s nearly empty. Well worth the extra weight IMHO and the £100+ price.

I bought a ZPack Duplex, a LiteAF DCF 46L back pack and a 20° EE quilt. Between them it's a ton I spent but I am in love with my backpack! So comfy and carries well AND is super light, my quilt is very warm and isn't restrictive like a sleeping bag, my tent is so light weight i have to visually ascertain it is in pack. For my solo camping it's palatial in size. I totally understand not everyone can but them all at once due to price but the weight savings makes hiking so much more enjoyable and sustainable on my poorly maintained 40 year old body.

Honestly, the "expensive thing I don't regret" would be a tie between the BA Copper Spur HV UL1 tent which, cost me a whopping $380 at a local retailer, and the ULA CDT backpack which was an astonishing $252, with custom fabrics and such. Everything else has carried that immediate "damn, I hope that was worth the $150 I just threw at it was worth it."

My grandpa always told me, "If you buy quality, you will only cry once." My quality items I cried when I bought them, but have smiled ever since: EE 10 degree quilt and 40 degree quilt. Enlightened Equipment makes the best quilts, imo. ZPacks Duplex-camo. Been my backpacking tent for 3-4 years or so now. No regrets. ZPacks Arc Haul backpack. The Osprey AG was more comfy, but I love the weight savings, and it rides just fine with my load. Benchmade Griptilian Mini folding knife. My EDC for several years now, goes everywhere with me. Great video as always. :)

My most expensive item is a Hammock Gear Econ Incubator 10° Underquilt. With coupon, just under $200. It's wonderful for the shoulder seasons and much much lighter than my previous cold weather solution. (Army Surplus M-1949 feather (not down, feather) sleeping bag, 7.5lbs - but it kept me more than warm down into the low teens) All my other gear is budget. Some items, I feel budget is better. If it works well and lasts 3 or 4 seasons before needing to be replaced, you can buy new w/out spending much, that's a win. (Example: DIY alcohol stoves, inexpensive canister stoves, Ozark Trail 9" spoon) If you buy budget and it's miserable to use or doesn't last long, then spend more. (Example: backpacks, sleep system, tarp, hammock) Honestly other than the quilt for the cold weather, I haven't upgraded to more expensive gear. I'm on my 3rd budget hammock as I test out features to see what I like/don't like. So far, I'm really liking the Ridge Outdoors Pinnacle 360 hammock. I really do want to get a lighter weight tarp that I don't need to fold to get into it's stuff sack easily. Watching for deals on tarps. Leaning towards a Paria tarp at the moment. I know they aren't super lightweight, but it's better than what I have now, gets great reviews and has a lifetime warranty.

I got a Feathered Friends Swallow 20 degree sleeping bag with their highest loft down (at the time) and a water resistant outer. It was expensive, but not ridiculously so. A bit heavier than a quilt, but with the zipper completely open it works like a quilt. Since I dont use a puffy I want the option of zipping the bag up completely around my head too, and the Swallow has just worked from summer temps to several degrees colder that the rating.

Totally agree with the concept of buying ultralight gear so you can carry luxury items..! Would love that chair, although its a bit heavy and bulky, so i think im gonna go with the Hummingbird Hammocks "Single Hammock" ($65 - 147g/5.2oz) instead. I already got the Zpacks Duplex and the Hilleberg Bivanorak (500g/1.1pound raingear that also works kinda like a "bivy", only it allows me to sit up and look around and cook food - and even walk around and take a pee - without going out of my nice warm and dry shelter), so if i get that hammock, i can have 3 ultralight shelter options with me and the combined weight will only be 1.25kg/2,75pounds (+ treestraps); which i think is pretty decent, considering that it will include a pretty nice set of raingear, and a comfy hammock for chilling at camp. Im sure i can find more lightweight raingear, but i really like the cowboy camping feeling im getting with the Bivanorak, as well as that it allows me to set up camp really quickly, right on a pretty small trail, in case i dont feel like searching for a big open spot for the Duplex.

I buy from cottage industries when ever possible. I don't mind spending more for a item that is going to hold up for a long time and be comfortable for me. The most I ever spent on a hammock was $345.00 for a Clark tropical ( out of production years ago ) and it's as good today as back then. Packs , Cuben fiber and in various liter sizes. I like them for their waterproof abilities and light weight. Quality costs more but in the long run it's a lot less in cost then something that falls apart the next year. I started with gear like that back in the 60's. It would of been nice to have what we have today , back then. Best of all would of been the packs base weigh of 10 pounds or less and not a pack that alone was 10 pounds or sure felt like it.

Hi John Kelley, Boy I love that chair idea but I purchased the Helinox 0 and ultimately return it because it did not feel stable. I used it around to house for a 2 weeks prior to the return. The Chair One has my attention but its 2.2 pounds. Other than that I have the EE 20* Quilt and just purchased the OV Shadowlight 60L. I also use a 20* Hammock Gear underquilt. Take care John and have a great weekend.

Good video buddy. Definitely ain't nothing wrong with the spending some money on good gear. The gear that you spent your money on is worth it in my book. I want to say for me it was between my tent & quilt. You take it easy buddy.

@@john_kelley thank you John I really do appreciate that man. I really hope our path cross each other one day too man. That would mean a lot to me and it would be so awesome. I was raised open Church to bless my heart with those in need & those people really need my help. Just last week I hope a big guy who was homeless. I noticed he kept asking car something so I pulled the truck 🚛 over and jumped out and asked him if he needed help. He told me he hadn't ate since Sunday morning and he was starving and was thirsty. I ended up cooking five TV dinners a lot of my truck 🚛 , gave him six water bottles , he had no shoes on or shirt so I gave him my flip flops off my feet. I could tell it was very hard for him to walk barefooted 👣 because of his weight. I know what it's like. When I used to weigh 390 I could walk Barefooted 👣 with no problems because my feet were built for that. I just told him to be very very careful when walking in them because his foot was a size 11 and mine's was a size 15 and I didn't want him to twist his ankle or break his ankle wearing them because they stressed out because of me having it very extremely wide feet. But it made for a very interesting trip driving back home 1,543 mile barefooted 👣 with me needing to go into truck stops , rest areas , Barefooted 👣 style. I got some very weird looks but when I explained why they said the same thing I was a good man. Again thank you so much man. I'm just doing something that I would want somebody to do for me if I was in that situation.
