I rented an i8 over the weekend and I want to give my truly honest perspective. This car is drastically misunderstood in the wide scheme of what it is and what it delivers. It receives hate because of its powertrain, but the powertrain is what allows a lot of people to own something that's outside the class of McLaren or a Lamborghini. Sure, those are amazing cars with a very driver-centric feel and deliver the true supercar experience. The powertrain allows you to own the car with much lower maintenance costs than the exotics that it competed with at MSRP. It was much easier on the wallet that way. Was it great with acceleration? Not really. It did pull you back so you did feel something fun though through the eBoost torque. Absolutely incredible in the canyons. If you don't care only about straight line speed, then this is an amazing drivers car in the canyons and mountain roads. Brings a smile to your face. Very planted, very predictable. In the way of it being a daily, it can be done if you're not concerned about too much space. The fuel economy is crazy and you can practically live off just the eDrive mode alone if you're going to and from work within your city. But I wouldn't necessarily say that this car does not deserve the "supercar" title. This car doesn't really compare with the exotics in it's original MSRP range. This is more like a comfortable GT style car that allows you to live under the supercar status of someone who owns one of those exotics for less than half the price. The way that this car makes you feel while you're behind the wheel, approaching it, and leaving it is a whole different experience than what you're used to in a normal car. During the time of renting it, I had people pulling out their phones rolling down their windows yelling at me how crazy cool the car was, and coming up to me and asking me if they can have pictures in it. I even had someone come up to me in the gym expressing how cool the car was while it was parked out front, and how it was the most interesting thing he'd ever seen in his 65 years on this earth. This car is a unique bridge between being able to live under the supercar status without having to pay the exorbitantly high supercar price tag. It absolutely was not worth the original MSRP from when it was released. I see why no one would have ever thought twice about buying that car when it was new. Is it worth it for around 50-70k as it is? Absolutely. Would I buy this as my daily driver? No. I wouldn't. My Audi S5 is a lot faster and a lot better as a daily than the i8 was. But the i8 delivered something special. It made you feel a way no other car could and nearly holds its own class and in it's depreciated market state. It's incredibly worth it. I would definitely own it as a second car alongside my S5 one day. Sorry for the long rant, I just wanted to be completely transparent! Hope this helps if there's someone here unsure about how to feel about the car or if you're in the market for one.

Nice review! You should write this out to some forums or more public i8 videos. Problem is that majority of YT is from US and they have zero, I mean zero clue how expensive it is to drive or own a vehicle outside of US. When gas costs 5x compared to prices in US and cars costs 2x more, you start to think another ways to commute than your V8 truck. I'd like to see that US citizen who would pay for example baseline Vette 120-150k dollars or baseline Mustang 90k. Yeah, that's the price range in Europe. Plugin hybrids are great way to avoid paying $10-12 per gallon fuel prices and congestion charges and they give much more perks also. I've been lucky enough to be able to own here in EU cars like Porsche 911 or Ferrari 360 Modena and they costs fortune just to run (fuel, insurance, road tax, etc.). Not to mention how they cost 2x more than at States because of Co2 tax legislation etc. All the spare parts (no matter if buying from main dealer or 3rd party) in are much more expensive in EU than in States because of VAT etc. taxes. Not to mention labour cost which is about double than in US. Then I got my i8 and absolute cheapest way to own a super car like of sports car has been my i8. It costs pennies to run, maintenance is much cheaper than for example M-series or Audi S / RS cars, insurance is cheap, yearly tax is pennies compared to 4 digit with Porsche / Ferrari / Camaro etc gas guzzler. Yet it has the looks like it came from the future, even now when its 10 year old model it looks and turns head much, much more than your Porsche or such. It gives a true special feeling as its so rare. They made them 20 000 but you hardly see any of them anywhere. And while I am 100% petrol head I like the ... "effect" or surprise feeling when you cruise absolute silent with your decade old yet super car look-a-like sports car. Peoples cant believe whats happening, wheres the noise. Even ppls who generally hate "noisy & polluting sports cars" are approaching me and asking what this thing is.

Everyone mentions about the window not going fully down, so you can't rest your elbow on the door. You're sitting right on the floor in this car FFS so your elbow would be so high up in the air even if the window did go all the way down, that it would be so uncomfortable, so it's a completely irrelevant comment in my opinion. As long as your elbow can rest on the door armrests that is all I would worry about...

I almost had one but backed out after I found out the issues that these have. Recommended to allow $10000 per year for maintenance

make sure you have at least 5 year bmw premium warranty on that i8. there are a lot of things that will go wrong with the vehicle because its a hybrid. I didnt pull the trigger on buying one yet because of all the things that will go wrong on that car. Like the windshield will likely get cracked because how its designed. It uses AC to cool the engine and that goes out pretty quick, that like 18k just to fix that problem. the hydraulic for the door will need to get replaced every 6 month if youre opening the door a lot.The Tires wear out pretty quick as well, and i can go on and on. Im still debating if i want to take the risk of buying one as well. Its a beautiful car though, congrats.

Uses AC to cool the engine? Bro apparently you have no clue what so ever about any automotive stuff do you? It does not use any "AC" to cool engine down. It has 2 separate cooling systems, similar to normal cars. One for HV battery (like Teslas etc. have) and one for combustion engine.
