Great advice, we bought ours a few years ago and had the gas issue, I fitted a gas locker then got the pipework done by a proper company so I knew it was safe, I also had to fit a fuse box for the 12v system. All stuff I didn't realise needed done at the time. So I hope this helps others.

Really good and worthwhile video guys 👏 I was recently watching a van conversion on KZbin by a private individual and was shocked to see what was being done or not done more to the point and don't think he was qualified to work on gas or electric 🤔 The biggest problem was that the people paying him were really happy with what was being done and have no idea of the risk they are putting themselves at nevermind the fact they will at some point pass the danger on to some unsuspecting person who wants to buy it. Surely this sort of thing should be picked up on a MOT ????

Exactly right - I sold a couple of lo loader Lutons from my business and idiots wanted to convert them into motor homes and massively underestimated the true costs of conversion. They think they can buy a platform cab Luton and it’s effectively a coach built motor home - it would cost £10k minimum if not £15k to convert and even then it will always be a hash. One even said I don’t know what I’m talking about - I’d rather have my 1999 auto cruise than a 2015 platform Luton messed about with into something it’s not… it’s scary how ignorant people are they see the age not the conversion.

Thanks for the advice regarding self build campers I have completed the kitchen and wardrobe in I've installed water using 10mm copper tube ang gas in 8mm with gas cylinder over a gas drop out just waiting for my steel box to arrive currently on the 240 volt with the hook up hidden in the dummy fog light of my T4 with the consumer unit fixed under the bed along with the leisure battery and Zig charging unit, leisure battery will be housed in a box with a gas vent. Will resume construction when it stops hissing down. Cheers Ian in a soggy Slime Regis hi Kev

One thing we learn from your vid...the UK is totally over regulated in every aspect of our daily lives. You'd think thousands had been dying from lack of these regs where by the opposite is the case.

Great advice. Not your fault but alot of the reason behind self builds is due to the extortionate price of legitimate built campers.

My understanding ref gas locker is as long as its air tight with drop out vent it is acceptable ? If the bottle were to blow then a thin metal housing would offer no more protection than an 18mm ply housing ? The locker is to secure any leaking gas to allow it to drop to the bottom and out the drop vent and a metal locker is not a legal requirement to pass a gas test ? Im not saying i am correct and only mentioning what i have read in the past on various sites.

Great video guys, full of good hints and tips. I recently saw a post on Facebook, where a guy had either had a large van converted. Or had converted it himself (cant remember which). It had multiple windows installed etc etc. Plus it had all the vinyl stickers all over it. Big letters saying campervan etc. DVLA would not convert it to a motor caravan, because they said it did not look like a campervan lol.

To add to what you say - I would not buy a motorcaravan from you where the gas supply isn't properly installed. Quite obviously, but I felt worth mentioning to others who may be watching and buying their first vehicle. Good video. Good advice. Exactly what you expect from a professional dealer.

Yes you have to be careful with camper vans or any vans. I recently bought a Caravan, sold at full market value from a reputable dealer. To cut a long story short, it was a cat c write off after a fire, sold by the dealer at full market value to me. I was given the wrong vin number but when I got the correct one from the window, I got it cris checked. I found out that it had been involved in a fire, re - bought from the insurance company, restored and resold by a repairer. I was not told it's history by the dealer. Moral of the story, don't trust anyone, do your own checks, small company camper van builds can be as good or even much better than say a california etc, particularly in design to suit your personal requirements and save you thousands along the way. I will say it again don't trust anyone ! I got all my money back, you may not ? I own a small company built camper van as well, it was built exactly to my taste and requirements and has all the safety points done to a certificated gas safe standard. I am very pleased with it and have done about 15 trips in it since last year and saved thousands along the way but I did my checks during the build process. It is unfair to tarnish all small company builds with the same brush. From my caravan story, I could say don't trust any dealer ? but I don't. There is good and bad in all walks of life.

Really enjoy your podcast I'm electronics engineer by trade and retired I get offered work on these vans fitting camera systems I'm checking wiring 95% a vehicle's I get asked to work on our diabolical and it's quite simple on last day agree to a full wiring inspection I will not work on them the one thing I hate the most and I see the most are Scotch locks as you know the bright blue and you can't miss then in the last 6 years since I've been doing this I only ever had two customers that have said if it's wrong rip it all out undo a proper job one particular customer I cannot name this person are the horsebox with sleeper at the time this vehicle was about 10 years old came from Germany the wiring standard was very high wherever terminated was labelled all lighting LED with backup system the breaker for the positive outside the battery box the camera system was unbelievable 8 cameras inside and out I've recently updated the system the problem with self builds I find is people burying cables that to me is a no-no a velocity self bills pile too much on fuse here is an idea and a piece of kit I use handheld thermal camera that tells you something to me it means inadequate wiring gas there's no way I will touch carbon monoxide detectors are a must fire extinguishers are a must gaining knowledge of how to use them as in powder or CO2 and know what they used for that piece of knowledge is important personally I have educated more than a few people regarding extinguishers more to the point how to avoid the situations underwear happens to be a self-build it's more to the point when is gonna happen I don't believe there is enough regulation in place my new electric cars evs is a much more dangerous proposition getting back to your podcast a rather enjoyed your little chat ever left Little Closer I have quite a bit of professional video equipment I've done nothing big just Small Stuff I can actually see quite a lot of potential teaching people a lot more things like suitability as you find people will always go for the cheaper option looking forward to your next podcast

I can really see where your coming from regarding the safety issue - however i am a motorhome owner and i do all my work myself now and have done for the last 5 yrs - why ? Because everytime i have took my MH to have a service or a hab check or even warranty work carried out, something is always broken or something not been fitted or tightened up correctly - and to top it off you get charged the earth for it - too many so called expert novices about..

Very useful video there Jason and Kevin. Bit worrying too if lots of people are oblivious to the dangers with self builds. If a self build came to you with non regulation gas, or badly fitted leisure battery or non crashed tested seating, is it just too expensive to put right / replace / fix, to then sell as a safe vehicle?

Respectfully, if you're not a young. 170 pound man who's about 5'9, I assure you, there aren't any seats/cars tested for your crash safety. If you're older, disabled, younger or much smaller/larger than that, or female you might be in trouble. See the air bags. There were decapitations in front seat smaller people.

@@TheMotorhomeMan I’m considering buying one to start but with the longer term view of buying 2 or possibly 3 motorhomes to rent full time on one of these rental apps. I’ve got a transit conversion which I now know needs a Gas cabinet and solid pipe before even booking a habitation certificate test the other bits should be fine but only an inspection will confirm this. If you open to a conversation I would appreciate your view point about this and I’ll need to source the right vehicles.

As long as your using the usual things like a hookup or solar to top up your batteries there really is no need to worry about overcharging/overpowering the batteries on your van! Hope this helps😀

Very good and important info but video too long and repetitive. Conversation between cameraman and main talker has different levels of clarity and volume and is distracting mostly. Wishing you well in your endeavors.

It horrifies me the way so many fit Chinese diesel heaters especially putting diesel in plastic containers in same enclosure with often very limited ventilation

Also if you are buying a professionally built van by a main stream manufacturer give it a good check over. My Elddis CV20 must have been a Friday afternoon build as the quality was awful

Thank you for the video, I have a Fiat scudo mk1 1999 campervan. When did the crash test certificate apply to campervans? Mine was done professionally & has a pop out Remo stove with a hair spray type tin. It also has a double rcd socket. So everything else looks OK

Interesting, so would would buy a van as a trade in from a small company if they could provide all the certificates and even construction photos of the process? And if yes would you sell it or would be be passing in on to a specialist trader ?

We’ve just taken delivery of a Westfalia Kelsey. Never had a camper before, from the show and on the surface looks amazing but the overall fitting is just atrocious. Metal swarf in the door so leaving rusty marks on the paint work, looking underneath is a horror show, bare metal water tank bracket totally unprotected. Panels on the sliding doors rattling like a sheet of plastic in the wind. On the whole not what we expected.

Really useful video. Can you clarify the rear seat crash test certificate. It needs to be a crash tested seat...or the installer needs to have a crash tested certificate for their work? Guessing anyone could put a crash tested seat in badly and it's not safe...not sure if this is what you were trying to say or not

Hi Rob, M1 Crash testing is a certificate that's given to each individual bed when its been pull tested to ensure that it's safe in a crash like scenario. Correct, anyone could put a crash tested bed in wrong but I suppose you can say that for most things related to a camper. Hope this helps😀👍

I was led to believe, to fit gas appliances in a vehicle you don't have to be qualified? Doesn't it just state you have to be competent?
@TheMotorhomeMan
@TheMotorhomeMan 10 ай бұрын
Probably legally no you don't if it's your personal vehicle. It is a major safety risk though as people get the qualifications and go through training for a reason

Right Guys. I have just purchased a new M/H and you keep mentioning a metal clad unit for the gas bottles.!! We have 2 x 6kg bottles in the garage area which has the LPG sticker on the door and also a drop vent. Should this be in a metal box, because ours is not.?

I have seen these KZbin videos of self-builds and, quite frankly, cringed at some of the things people have done! I am no DIYer, electrician or gas engineer - but if I cringe, what and earth is going on. And the other thing is weight. How many self-builders go and weigh their van once finished, or even think about the weight of stuff they are fitting!
