This video could be used as a learning tool for other people who want to be a certifed tech. Also, I had a 2000 Tundra. It had the TRD 4wd options. One of the things that I did noticed is that the tires were over sized as part of the option package. The spec sticker on the front door sill did not show the tire difference. The tire pressure for the standard size tire and the oversized tire was different. I just found the correct pressure from the tire dealer for my tires' size.

My issue with CPO has always been that you are paying a premium based on trust that the car was inspected by a competent and honest tech. If we could all be assured that a master tech with a strong commitment to customer satisfaction was doing our inspection, it would be great, but I don't feel like that is the typical situation at many dealerships. I am glad to hear that AMD takes this very seriously and also glad to hear that Toyota leans on dealerships that are releasing CPOs that don't live up to their standards. The extended warranty is some protection, but that alone doesn't justify the price premium -- you really have to believe in the competence and honesty of the certifier to make these worthwhile.

Almost like there should be a Mechanic rating with feedback. High rating would instill better trust process associated with their signature on the CPO sheet.

I am on bmw forums all the time.. the number of horrible cpo cars that had been in very bad accidents is amazing. So the fraud element is very strong. If sales and service folks were competent and honest it would. Be great. For me it usually takes just a few minutes to see signs that nothing was actually checked or verified.. low filthy fluids.. worn tires. Bad front end parts ... etc.

It may not be a 100% consistency but you will get some guarantee in any regards vs all the onus on you to try pick a gem.. think of it as a premium for them to sellect the best few now it's easier for u to pick the best of the best available at that time..

This video saved me a potentially really bad situation and losing money. Bought a Toyota CPO vehicle, when I went to take possession of vehicle I noticed a few things off and asked they fix them before taking it. Went home that night and saw this video and realized they must have never done an actual inspection, went and talked to the sales manager next day and they basically admitted they never did the inspection and that they do that all the time. Make sure you ask for the 160 point inspection checklist if you go buy a CPO.

This is really the kind of inspection I do to begin with, all aside from paint. The vehicles I buy, are much older, and have a lot more miles. I also buy private seller too. I have run across people who didn't want me to pop the hood, crawl under the vehicle, or open the oil fill cap to see if there was sludge, and I walked away from those vehicles, because they had something to hide.

I bought my Camry used at 3 years old and 38,000 miles. Interior was pristine, ran perfectly with no leaks and everything worked. But it had quite a few grandma parking lot scratches on the bumpers and a big scratch on the drivers door. It had been on the lot 4 months probably because of the scratches. However I needed it for a work car so none of that mattered and got a great deal because of the scratches. Dealer did service it with fresh filters, wiper blades, and a oil change before putting it up for sale. The battery died 3 days after I bought it and the dealer replaced it free of charge. Car still runs great 2 years and 45,000 miles later. Pretty sure it would be a certified car in today’s market.

I had replaced the water pump 4 times, crank shaft seal, cam shaft seal 2 times, timing belt 4 times, oil pump seal 2 times, 3 sets of spark plugs, about 6 sets of tires and engine oil with oil filter every 3000 miles. I had replaced the front brake pads 6 times and never replaced the break fluid. I do live in the South where they do not have to salt the roads, Never had to do nothing to the AC, I was just in this week with my wifes 2016 car with 40,000 miles on it to have the free tires rotated and balanced. They said they reconmended that I have a AC refresh done to it, I asked what that involved and was told they would take out the old freon and put in new freon, I just hate to go to a dealership for anything at all because of all the upselling they try to pull on you.

This year I bought a 2017 ram, before I bought it I had it taken to a Dodge dealership in the city where the truck was in. I paid them to inspect the truck and test drive it, check the tires and tire pressure. I asked them check any check engine notices present and past. They sent me a copy of the inspection report that said the only thing wrong with the truck was it needed a engine air filter, oil change was coming due and it needed a cabine air filter. I had asked them to balance the tires also, which I paid for. The way I looked at it I was about to drive 8 hours to buy this truck if it checked out good. Spend money on hotel for one nights so having it checked out and walking away from it, if it was a bad truck, I though it was a good ideal to just walk away. We would be driving back on a Sunday, so good luck on any help on the road. Well we drove 8 hours, bought the truck spent the night in a hotel, the next morning Sunday started home. Less than five miles down the interstate the right front end started bouncing all over the road, a car passing by pointed at the front end of the truck. I called the guy I bought the truck from and asked what was going on, he said I must have hit something because the Dodge dealer had inspected it for me. We sat along the side of the interstate 4+ hours for our travel club to send someone out to change the tire, I have a bad back. The guy that changed the tire said that it look like the tire had seperated and that the spare looked like it was also seperated. Being Sunday and Walmart and Sam's club did not have our tire size in stock, so we had to spend extra day and night in a hotel. Monday morning we found a tire store that had our size tire about 1 mile from the hotel, we drove 20 mph and bought two new tires. The owner of the tire store said both tires were coming apart and he could not see how anyone at the Dodge dealership could have missed it. I will stop here, I could type about two more pages of things that they missed on their inspection for me. Money well wasted, live and learn, not everyone takes pride in their work.

Your story is chillingly horrifying; you could have had a serious accident with the tires separating like that. Worse still is that you paid the Dodge dealership to inspect the truck, to avoid such mishaps. Unfortunately, the technician who "inspected" it either wasn't well trained, was in a hurry (possibly pushed to rush to the next car) or didn't care to check everything. (I had a coworker who did the same job as I did, and he left out a LOT of steps and services that I always include; our manager was too busy to check behind him.)

Next day he took it to a different dealership for a (used car purchase check), usually about $100. Guess what? They found $5000 in repairs needed & printed it for my friend. He took the printout back where he bought the car & demanded they fix everything. Lesson learned.....ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS take your used car purchase to a different dealership & PAY the $100 for the assessment. Best $100 you will ever spend. Saved me from buying 2 problem cars. Don't trust your mechanic for this, the same brand dealership knows where that particular car and year will break down. Now you have a good car, so use your buddy mechanic that you trust for repair work & maintenance. 👍👍👍 PS...He loved the Miata & it turned out to be a great car.

Thank you for your informations. Years ago I bought a USED Lexus from a Honda dealer. It was almost 6 years old and had about 70,000 miles. I took it home from no more than 12 miles away and parked it.That afternoon i went to check out the new ride and things it has inside. I was very happy with all the good things until I checked the engine oil. I saw nothing on the dipstick. I thought the car wasn’t on the leveled surface. I moved the vehicle to the better place. After few minutes I checked oil again. It was still nothing on the dipstick. Turn out it was more than 2 quarts low on oil. I assumed that the dealer did some kinds of inspections before they put it out on the lot. Now I know it better.

@@JV-py3lgA month ago I purchased a used Highlander. I called the Toyota dealership that was the closest to the dealership I was buying from. They told me that they didn't have any appointments for the next 5 days. I couldn't wait so I called the Lexus dealership that was about 5 minutes away. When I spoke to the lady who picked up the phone she told me that they wouldn't do a pre-purchase inspection on a Toyota because they're a Lexus dealership. I told her that the Highlander was a cheap version of the RX and that their technicians must be Toyota certified, so they would have to be very familiar with the car. I ended up asking her to speak with a manager. They ended up giving me an appointment. I expected the inspection to cost way more at Lexus because their hourly rate is way more. Strangely enough the cost ended up being only $30 more than it would have cost at Toyota.

There are many other mechanics like him , they might not have the luxury to report this way. I’m not criticizing the CCN but if the car isn’t 100% but mechanically sound good and you know you could maintain it and fix it up.. basically if you know, and it comes with experience just by owning a used car and fixing it that when you go buy another one check it out, just the basics, car fax , title, test drive. And you’re not experienced, get a mechanic to check it out. Thanks again. But his videos are definitely a big plus!

My Camry that I've had for six years now and purchased with 22K miles on it now has 150K and it's just been preventative maintenance on it for the most part. I replaced my alternator about 30K miles ago and that's been it! It's been a reliable CPO vehicle! If I ever get a newer vehicle, I'll definitely buy a CPO after seeing this!

AMD, as a mainly Toyota buyer over the past 3 decades, one of the things I realized about 15 years ago, is that there is no way to tell what kind of gas was used in the car. This would be a question in my mind purchasing a used vehicle (mainly certified ones) since there are all kinds of non-tier 1 gas pumps, and some more remotely located pumps where the gas could be stale or really bad. Leave alone the owner using the wrong gas, which could be Ethanol gas etc. This mainly rears its ugly head with oxygen sensors and Catalytic convertors, which can be expensive repairs, and get noticed only when the check engine light comes on, always after the damage is done. This obviously isn't covered in any warranty other than the 12 month bumper to bumper. The check engine light comes on sometimes after 2-3 hours or more of driving. An honest Dealer would obviously repair that, but I'm sure if you owned your certified Toyota past 12 months, it would take a lot of approvals. I actually had a certified Camry one time that did this, luckily dealer took care of it no cost since it was my local dealer. I was grateful it was not the Cat! I've always bought new, with that being the only exception.
@steveboone5450
@steveboone5450 3 жыл бұрын
O2 sensors are typically not that expensive or difficult to replace in my experience (although the upstream AFR type can be a bit more pricy). In some states, the cat is regulated to be warrantied for a certain number of miles/years -- in some states that is 10 years, 100k miles. I think this tends to be the states that require emissions inspections to get a registration sticker.

@@steveboone5450 True, but if it is something that can be tested and replaced by a dealership for certification and peace of mind, it should be. I was more worried about the upstream ones that are not easy to get to for as DIY. I see people/friends driving around with the check engine light for months for no reason, and then dread the sticker inspection, when it could have been in the certification or warranty and not from their pocket. And some of these are very expensive cars which a previous owner ruined with bad fuel, probably to save a few cents a gallon. But then the new owners could use bad fuel (usually to save a few cents) and cause it themselves. 😒 Unfortunately, my state does not test emissions, as far as I can see, only reads codes from the OBDII. They used to and stopped years back.

I just purchased a 2017 IS300 F sport awd with 58,000 miles off a Nissan dealer. The car has a clean carfax but incomplete service history. Performed the 60,000 mile service on it and the front/rear diff oil. It's a gamble but hopefully been a low mile car the neglect if any won't have severe long term consequences. I drained the oil as soon as I got the car home, found and aftermarket oil filter not even sitting in properly all crushed in the housing. Crazy. Thanks for all the information you put out, really helps DIY'ers like me.

I bought a mini van from a dealership and it was a mess . It wasn't certified but all the fluids except the oil was filthy and black. Brake,power steering and transmission fluid were never changed and the vehicle had 60 k on it. When I addressed this they said they were only required to make sure the vehicle was safe to drive. Now this was a major dealership and not a private outfit so I expected more. I went to service and asked the service manager why and that is what he told me. The previous owner neglected to do the 35 k maintenance schedule so I had the flush everything out and replace the fluids . I won't be going back to that dealer again because I feel something as simple as fluids should have been addressed.

Our CPO Camry SE had a loose driver's seat, evidently a known issue with some 2017 models. The car only had 8000 miles on it so it was like new. The dealership stood behind the fix, a new seat frame. At first the service writer was hesitant but one needs to assertive, in a nice way of course. The service manager stepped in and made it right. That was in 2017 and the car still feels new!

It's an interesting calculus. A buyer pays a dealer a premium over buying from a private party for convenience and for some level of verification quality. That premium might be 20-25% above the private party price of the vehicle. The certified used car certification probably adds 10 to 15% more to that sales price but you probably avoid any problems at least through the life of the certified warranty and maybe a few years more. Probably worth it.

Thank you AMD!!! This video was worth watching 100% The information you provided here is excellent and very helpful. The fact that you state that you are suppose to sign and get a copy of that 160 Point Inspection is amazing, and I am pretty sure most never got it. It is only the true honest pridefully great dealership that do what they are suppose it, and I know that there many out there for us. Liked the paint door edge check technique that most do not know about that was a gem. I own a paint thickness gauge and your advise to check base thickness by using the roof paint thickness was great. But you switched the RAV’s at the end, lol One thing that I thought would have been good to mention in the video, as they come up after the cars are made, to check for RECALLS and to address them is an important part of certification as well since safety is high priority. I think that those watching this video if they had a great or horrible experience with a Toyota Dealership should list them here to help others. Those dealerships that provide honest sales and service should get their deserving shout outs as well as the bad ones to make customers aware.
