Love "being along for the ride". What are the rubber plugs in the heads for? I'm assuming the head castings are the same for both cylinder heads, but the cams sit in different positions so the rubber plugs are where the cam would come through the head on the other side... This is a beautiful car, Lexus at its best for sure.

I had a Corolla 5afe engine that ran for 30 years. It was a blast. Overhauled, and the beast is on the road again . Modern engines have so many issues and are no match to this.

There are exceptions to your rule, I brought my 2001 4x4 Ford Escape in mint condition. In 2025 I'm still driving it and it runs perfect. Just now I'm replacing the front wheel bearing s. In the summer I replaced the oil pan, new main bearings and seals. It was garage kept and still is, no rust at all. Of coarse new tires, brakes, belts, so far in the 20 years I've owned my Escape I've spent $5000 total. Ive taken it off road, through rivers and it keeps going, traction control is as good as a jeep. By the way it's just under 200k miles and I'm keeping it.

For me, the "value" of the car is meaningless. What matters is operating cost. Repairs are part of operating cost. So the real question is; If I buy another car, will its expected operating cost be less than if I repair my current car, and if so, by enough to cover the cost difference? Generally, unless the car has some sort of structural issue, it will be cheaper to repair it. Of course, I wouldn't put a brand new engine in an old car -- I'd get a used one, if I had to. But I never have. Used transmission, yes. Over the years I've bought a handful of new and a handful of used cars. I like the peace of mind that comes from buying and keeping a new car for as long as i can. I don't agree that there's any reason to get rid of it at 10 years or 100K miles, so long as it operates properly. Unless I have a cashflow issue, new is worth it to me for peace of mind.

I have a 10 yr old toyota 4 runner drive short distances with 95k miles. I think I am gonna have Toyota do the air induction cleaning. At idle it runs rough for a few seconds then doesn’t. Would that be indicative to do the cleaning?

My brother has a 08 Tundra 5.7. We took it to a reputable engine company out of Houston, TX. They have had the truck for 2 years. They said they were done with the rebuild. We would go pick the truck up and the same day the truck would throw an engine alarm. This happened 3 times already. We just picked it up last night around 6pm. The engine threw an alarm again this morning. He shot me a picture of the engine light. It doesn’t have the same power, a loss of power one would say. The day before we went to pick it up and when we started the engine the belt squeal was so loud the owner of the engine rebuild came out and asked what was wrong. They kept it that night and said we will put a new belt on it in the morning and fixed a pulley that was hanging up. So back to this morning the engine light came on and it is probably the same alarm. It’s been two years. It all started from piston 4 loss of compression. We got the engine rebuild and the guy said it would go another 250k miles easily. This battle has been going on for 2 years. What should we do? I dunno. I believe the mechanics they have there don’t know what they are doing with the Toyota’s 5.7 obviously. How does an engine rebuild because of piston 4 having no compression have so much trouble after the rebuild?

So selling the car back to the dealer led me to purchase this toyota. A good basic less electronics car than the pos jetta. Thank you Toyota! 💪

Absolutely agree with your comment about cars being an expense not an investment. However contrary to your advice we do keep our cars until the wheels fall off. Not literally but here in the rust belt like you in the Chicago area what ends the life of cars is typically rust. My metric about whether or not a repair is worthwhile has noting to due with the value of the car but whether or not the monthly cost of the repair amortized over the best guess about the remaining life of the car will be significantly lower then the monthly cost of a new car. Insurance for us is a non issue as we typically drop Comprehensive and Collision after 5 years or so and plan to eat the cost of replacing the car if it gets destroyed. For example was have had a local shop repair the rocker panels on our daughter's 2007 Corolla and this year on our 2008. That should keep them roadworthy for a number of more years. We are pretty disappointed with our 2020 Corolla and will be inclines to junk it sooner rather then later. Since we retire our cars when they have very little value we donate them to a local charity so they can get a little money when they are auctioned off.
