Thanks for taking us along on your trip. It was interesting just listening to the conversation. Also, thanks to the other horseman for allowing you to film your visit. He has some nice looking Percherons but the older you get, who wants an 18 hand team, unless they’re in a show hitch. A 17 hand horse is tall enough, especially when it comes to harnessing. To me width is more important than height. The whole visit and conversation was very interesting. Thank again.

Wow!!! I thought I was in a time-warp!!! I am use to seeing Jim in his buildings, or out with his horses, when the videos start. And then BAM, there he was in a regular vehicle, going down the road, with the lovely Brenda by his side. Took me a little bit to wrap my head around that. But then we see him in a barn full of horses, just touching them gently, and leading them around, and they obeyed his commands and touch. And then I said to myself,.....that's the Jim we all know. (Gotta admit, it was a little weird seeing you in a vehicle.) (Ha!Ha!) I wonder if your horses can smell the smell of a vehicle on you, and think to themselves,.....he's been cheating on us again?!?!

@@WorkingHorsesWithJim After working with Shires....I dont see myself owning anything else. I just love their general behavior and calm demeonor. You can see a few on my channel. My friend raises one or two a year. I'm in Quebec so we are close and ours live outside all year. People of bigger stature are getting into larger breeds and we already see the price going up because of demand and low advailability. (also gorvenment sponsored inflation, of course) Don't expect anything under 17hh though even for a mare! We got 2 mare including the heaviest muscular white one bred with a 19.5hh stallion. It's due for august and that's gonna be a powerhouse when it grow up!

I think I have told you but the first draft horse I bought had been a pulling horse. He would hit that evener so hard no other horse wanted to work with him! Then I got a team of mares one experienced one just halter broke. They worked so good together I sold the pulling horse.

It's always exciting to go shopping for new horse. Jim, the late Maurice Telleen, founder of the Draft Horse Journal, once told me he thought the reason that one didn't see too many Percherons used in pulling competitions was that they were too smart to be exploited for that purpose (:. Back in Bavaria, there were a good number of Percherons in pulling competitions, but they were of the European, stockier type than what is found here in the USA. One of my Percherons is a Modoc Herbert son, and he is willing to pull anything. I find that generally Percherons have better hooves than American Belgians.

At thirteen, in the mid fifties, when I would be sent to the barn to hook up one of the teams, a mother/daughter pair, the older would step on my foot, just enough to hold me, or lean to hold me against the stall wall. I explained to my boss the constant delay in getting them harnessed, and he advised I had to show her who was boss. ‘Whack her across the head’. The next time it happened, I grabbed an old wooden stave water bucket nearby, whacked her across the head, and proceeded to harness them up without incident. The bucket had separated into it’s staves. When I proudly explained my success, I received a sound kick in the ass, as he yelled, “my grandfather made that bucket!”I was able to re-assemble the bucket, and learned a lesson. I Enjoy your videos.

Interesting visit, see what he had. Funny there are mare people and gelding people. I like mares myself, all my "keepers" were mares, and I figured that if you have mares you need never run out of horses, they self-propagate. I also think there is a spark to them that's not always there in a gelding. Never ever noticed any oestrus behaviour or hormonal issues unless I was looking for it. Never found them temperamental like some think they are. You're well down the track now and its March '21 and you've got those Suffolk colts to play with. I did like that filly, very pretty. and quiet.

Jim, I don't know if I go along with the being-gelded-in-even-years. I've had 2 Haflinger geldings, and a mare. I bought each of the geldings as a 2 year-olds, a year apart. According to their registration papers, each was gelded as a yearling, at 13 months and 14 months old, respectively. I had the one for 4 years and I still have the other, now 18 years old. Both matured level at withers and croup. That's just two horses, I know, but that's been my experience. Dennis, in Ontario, Canada.

@@WorkingHorsesWithJim They listed it as a consignment auction. Musta been 500 people there anyway. If you know Christie Miller (? I think) the auctioneer from Burke, get his schedule. They have at least 6 other Amish auctions coming over the next 3 months. I think he's on auctionzip.com, but I'd also imagine the Free Trader up that way or Malone paper (if there is still one) might carry his notices. I'm pretty sure the guy you got the cultivator from was at the auction today. Just looked, they have a number, 518-483-6804, you can get on their mailing list.
