My main problem with Rolex is the way the brand treats it’s customers, if the damn ad is laughing at me because I want a Rolex then I’ll just take my business elsewhere and if I need to a ten thousand dollar purchase history and a personal relationship with my AD to buy a Rolex then again I’ll take my business elsewhere. If the brand doesn’t value me as a customer then the brand is not worth my time, it’s why I’ve been wearing omegas for a while now

Iam so glad I brought my 2 Rolexs in 1983.... Yep I just walked into Zales jewelers and purchased a no date not chronometer rated submariner for £474 and my Air King with a dark blue dial and a machined bezel for £390 yep 2 brand new Rolexs for sub 1k.... Now this is when RWC treated clients in a holistic manner and of course their watches where realistically priced..... And no ridiculous, disgraceful, silly waiting lists you just walked in the store and picked your watch from the Rolex display in the window..... Then the store assistant just popped into the storeroom picked up a replacement watch and put it into the shop window to replace the watches you just purchased........ Rolex in 2022 wow anyone who considers buying a Rolex now either has serious mental health issues or just has too much disposable cash..... In 2022 Rolexs are eye-wateringly overpriced, overrated and overhyped..... Don't forget your paying top dollar for a mass produced wristwatch with a basic uncomplicated movement... I absolutely dread to think how much profit RWC and their authorised ADs make on every unit sold.... Absolutely disgusting it's about time people started boycotting this watch company..... Don't pander to them they are taking you for a ride guys.... Now I treat myself to a couple of watches every year so what have a purchased this year?..... 2 beautiful divers both from Swiss watch companies with great history and heritage..... And no waiting list... No waffle and hot air from sales staff... And both these watches are great value for money and are far far less common than a Rolex..... And people don't ask me if they are genuine or not like they do when you wear a Rolex... So what are these watches?.... The ETERNA SUPER KONTIKI 1973 on the gorgeous shark mesh bracelet and a EBERHARD & CO SCAFOGRAF 300 on the stainless Steel bracelet.... Both these watches look better than a submariner and get respect from people who really do know their watches 👍

Ash, interesting and informative video. Just picked up my Rolex Datejust 126333 with the slate (Wimbledon) dial. I had been on the preferred client list for almost 12 months before I received the call from the AD to inform me that my watch had arrived. I had an interesting conversation with the sales guy regarding the supply of Rolex watches in general. He stated that the supply is somewhat restricted as they want to (in his words) ‘keep the exclusivity of the brand and as to which clientele they sell to’. The AD had numerous ‘display only’ Rolex models on display which for me was extremely interesting as I managed to try on a no date Submariner. Very nice it looked too. Nice jacket by the way.

One of my friend asked AD if he could join the waitlist for stainless steel Pepsi. The AD said (seriosly! He wasn't joking): "Sure, but the waitlist is very long." My friend said: "Okay, that doesn't matter. I can wait. How long is it?" and the AD responded: "Right now it's about 250 years." My friend gave him a finger and bought an IWC.
@matty89ng2 жыл бұрын
See that's a really poor AD , I would rather prefer they be open & honest and just say you need a extensive purchase history in order to be on the waitlist for that model and issue with demand vs supply. Equally for a client unfortunatley we can't change how the game is played and we need to know the 'rules' , even if you get your name down , if you havn't got extensive history chances are you will never recieve the call anyway so makes no difference being on the so called 'list' For anybody who says they got a steel sports model without no purchase history is extremely rare occurance.
@suleymanthetufekci2 жыл бұрын
I don’t know if you are talking about jewelry stores (that is also an AD) but the AD i talked to says you don’t have to be worthy/eligible to enter the waitlist. The authorized dealer is a boutique that sells exclusively Rolex and Tudor watches. What else are you going to buy first to have your name written? The salesperson told me that Rolex prefers everyone to get a Rolex, rather than Rolex owners keep collecting more and more Rolexes while us plebeians sit and suffer. You just ask them to be put on the list (it’s not referred as waitlist) no down payment is required also, and wait to be picked by brand center, randomly. Arriving watches are not assigned to a favorable customer by the AD, rather they arrive with an existing name on them.

Dear Ash, Thanks for the videos and how nice of you to approach the dealer by chance, asking for a friend. I can confirm what you have been told by the dealer. Same here in Germany. BUT it is no big deal to purchase a used one. Chrono24 for instance are a bit more expensive because of the long waiting lists for the new ones. Here comes the thing: I purchased my own Grail (Speedy Moonwatch) at an authorized Dealer in Germany. New and unused, because it was my grail and I wanted it to be mine. But as for the Rolex situation I could live with a used one, if it had been my Grail (but no, my Speedy was and still is the number one :))
@pasquale782 жыл бұрын
My AD told me the same thing. There is no such thing as a waiting list. You have to be in their good grace, to be able to buy a Rolex. My experience is that you you have to be completely transparant about why you are going to purchase the watch. Convince them that the watch is going to celebrate a milestone in your life, so that they know you're not going to flip the watch. I was quoted "within a year" for a 36mm Explorer, based on my story on why I wanted to purchase the watch. By the way, Ash, that is a very nice jacket. It compliments the Pepsi very well. I bet that was intentional. ;-)

A luxury product is only 50% product, the other half is the experience. The fact that the buyer has to do all of these things is not right. The experience is lacking. I love the watches of Rolex but favor other brands now, mainly because of this. But there is another problem with this situation. Luxury is not just about the price, but also the exclusivity. Who can buy a Rolex Submariner now? Besides priority customers, people who are OK with some slightly or more shady business. Is it the "club" you want to be a part of? In some east European countries, black Audi means organized crime. Because those are the people favoring the brand. This is hurting the brand of Rolex.

Hi Ash. Great video, as ever. I was keen to buy a Rolex DJ, and visited the "national dealer in Bristol" - had a nice chat with one of the salesmen who told me that the delivery time of the specific version I wanted was usually about 12 months, but if I was lucky it might be only 6 months. I was VERY lucky - I had a call from the AD a WEEK after my visit asking me if I was still interested in the watch as they had one coming in the following Monday! When I picked up the watch I asked how it had become available so quickly, but didn't really get a clear answer. I can only guess is that the watch was ordered a while ago for a different customer who subsequently didn't want it, and so I got offered it. Love the watch, and now trying to avoid the "Rolex" slippery slope as I guess I wouldn't be so lucky next time around!

Amazing story and glad you got lucky. As they say it’s all down the discretion of the sales staff, if they want to get you one it can be pretty instant, if they don’t then the 12 month wait time becomes a continuous wait and the watch never comes about. Which model DJ did you go for and do you recommend it? Cheers

@@rezr9744 Hi Rez. A quick question here about watches... I do not like wrist watches, as they pull on my rather hairy wrists. Thanks as always, fascinating topics and information.

I must admit that I have had no personal experience of ownership, or use of a pocket watch. I understand your reservations about a watch with a steel bracelet, which may pinch your hairs, but have you considered a leather band, or indeed a NATO strap. These may offer an alternative option.

I have two Rolexes in my collection but the story you related is why I'm a little put off by Rolex. I would point out that Rolex is not the only brand. As an example Zenith made the movement for the original Rolex Daytona automatic . Zenith's Sports Chrono was releases in 2021 and continues to be the talk of the industry, many rating it above the Daytona plus there is no waiting list! I have this watch and love it. If your heart set on a dive watch you might look at Omega Seamaster (the James Bond watch) or Tudor Heritage Black Bay. Both watches are highly respected with a large number of experts ranking them above the Submariner. At one time I had the Submariner and I currently have both the Omega and Tudor, neither of which have the Rolex snob appeal but in every other way I consider them all equals but Omega and Tudor are actually available.

Hi Ash, it is frustrating that Rolex watches are for most customers who have the funds made to wait while flippers/ back door deals are done or customers with large spend histories with the dealer are given preference. Rolex if they wanted to could stop this, all they would have to do is centralise the watch orders either by country or at the factory by enabling the website to take the customers order on a first come first served basis. Once that particular customers turn has come around the watch is sent to the stipulated AD that the customer chose when ordering and an email direct from Rolex to the customer to say the watch has been dispatched to the AD and for the customer to contact the AD to arrange collection and payment. Should the customer decline the opportunity to complete the purchase then they would fill out online to that effect enabling Rolex to reassign that piece to the next customer at that AD. The dealer still gets the sale and customers are treated equally and fairly. The fact that Rolex don’t/won’t do this is to keep the hype, but I predict eventually customers will go to other brands which we are already seeing the start of. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on the above theory. Great channel by the way. Jason
@TheChapsGuide2 жыл бұрын
Oh I'm sure Rolex knows exactly what they are doing and they rather like the constant clamour and frustration that most customers feel when seeking to purchase a watch It has created a sort of enigma about buying a watch, that is unlike buying anything else. @TheChapsGuide2 жыл бұрын
If you are 100% sure that you will never sell the watch I think it is a great idea. It enhances the emotional attachment if you intend to pass it along to a child or special person when you depart the earthly kingdom - a counter argument is that the resale value will be adversely impacted by such an action. Personally I'm all for it and whilst I have not had any of my pieces engraved, I absolutely would do so, as my son will be the beneficiary of my watch collection and I rather like to think of him wearing my Rolex in 50-years with the inscription I had placed on the obverse of the piece.

Another point in favour of "going grey" is that you have to factor in continual (and sometimes pretty hefty) increases to the retail price. If your questioner has to wait 4-5 years (which is unfortunately entirely thinkable) then the retail price could be up in the territory of 10 grand by the time he gets to purchase it at the AD. Heck, it's only a couple of years ago that about 5K would have gotten you a Sub. Now the retail is already up to over 7K. And the only way from here is going to be up..up...and UP... BTW Ash, I do have a kind of sympathy for the people at ADs. I think it's hard for those of us who are buying to put ourselves in their shoes. Let's say they have one of these damn things being delivered from Switzerland each month, but they have over 100 people (with varying degrees of spend history) on a waiting list. And then, almost every single day, more and yet more people are phoning up or coming into the store wanting to buy the watch!! Of course they shouldn't be rude or arrogant to people. But I can see how it might fray on their nerves after getting the same thing day after day, week after week, knowing that people are going to be angry or disappointed, but also being pretty powerless to do much about the situation. And if they do just decide to sell to a random walk-in customer, then they are (pardon me) going to be f__ing all the people on the waiting list who have been waiting for months and years already.... So it's an impossible situation, really.
@frankbrennan16192 жыл бұрын
If ANYONE is telling you that you have ''to wait 4-5 years'' for ANYTHING, have some dignity & self respect & look completely elsewhere for something similar, or indeed even better & from a brand or company that will treat you in the manner as a customer/client MUST always be treated & valued...
@matty89ng2 жыл бұрын
I agree, I understand both sides of the argument, how would one feel if some random person gets a steel sports model that's worth 2.5x retail with no history when another person who does and is waiting for over a year doesn't get it........it would annoy 2nd person. Completely understand how difficult it is for ADs , people must realise this is all part of Rolex's plan , they want exclusivity and go up market......in doing so will price people out of the market. It's unfortunate but its the truth.

Flippers , investors are a major issue however often the one watch guy opted for Rolex as there was profit should they decide to sell . Moreover collectors changed their habits with collections being very Rolex heavy due to the investment angle . If world economies continue to tumble , inflation continues to bite furiously and the grey market prices continue to fall I think its very possible that availability at ADS this time next year may be very different proposition . so many of the aforementioned will be no longer interested which may open the door for genuine buyers .
