Tyler, 10 year V10 Touareg owner here. It's a beast of a truck and you'll never get tired of it (except for the maintenance). The V10 is basically two 5 cylinder engines bolted together, which is why most things are "double" on it. It never left me stranded though getting it through the technical inspection here in Switzerland proved to be too costly in thr end and I had to sell it. I miss it every day... Tons of power, a true offroader and once the engine is warm it actually gets really good gas (diesel) mileage. If you do decide to fix the (notorious) oil-leaking turbos also have the wizard look over the tandem pump and make sure your AC compressor works too. These are usually done engine-out too. I used to own a V10 TDI Touareg and I loved every thing about this car except that any maintenance on the engine which wasn't routine, was a pain. The official service manual recommends engine removal for this procedure. However, some experienced mechanics have developed methods to replace the turbos without fully extracting the engine. I was living in Poland at the time and after many years of ownership and a chip-tune which I lived to regret, the turbos did start to go. The mechanic knew how to replace the turbos and do a fair few things on that engine without needing to take it out. There is a YT titled "Tourag V10 turbo removal without subframe drop" and it demonstrates a method to replace the turbos without lowering the subframe or removing the engine entirely. This approach requires significant mechanical skill, specialized tools, and patience. Also having small hands helps. And it is a great car for winter. Drove it into the Ukrainian carpathian mountains in winter and it did a fantastic job whilst providing good comfort on VERY bad roads. Whatever you do, under no circumstances tune the engine. Absolutely don't do this NO MATTER WHAT you might read. It will be a problem for the turbos. if you get bigger turbos, it will still be a problem (thermal) and it will mash your transmission.

The dealer I bought my NSX from used a V10 Touareg as his tow car and used it all across Europe. Said he got nearly 30mpg and never let him down. My dad owned the 3.0 TDI when I was a kid, and it was such a good car. Super practical, very spacious and comfortable. I will always remember how the dash lit up at night like a commerical jet cockpit. He still says its one of the best cars he has ever owned.

Don't forget that there are glass struts too along with the hatch struts, replace them both while you are in there. The glass will open separately from the hatch, there is a small button under the center of the wiper arm. Cool feature on those that most don't know about. Congrats on the purchase! I have one as well, also currently broken.

I get ptsd watching this. Briefly aquired one one a few years ago with a running issue. Would fall flat on it's face and very diesel rich exhaust. After a brief diagnosis, i figured out one of the VNT control rod circlips had rusted itself off the lever. Fixed that one and preemptively replaced the other. Car was previously tuned, and HOLY $#!+!!!, that thing would peel your face back! Glad to get rid of it before it needed more serious work.

Volkswagen really WAS at the top of the world at the time (even though BMW robbed them from buying Rolls Royce when BMW bought the RR brand rights - for a hundred times less - from the jet engine builder - than VW paid for all the factories and tooling of both Bentley and RR - but remember, it's Britain - so it's a bit stupid legal stuff). IRONICALLY - from all the three cars - the most quiet startup - was the huge diesel's one. If I was to wager where the oil leaks come from (based on my experience with my 2008 A6 Allroad with the V6 3.0TDI) - I would say the oil comes either from the front main seal - or because the turbo return oil hose - is bust, in this case - two return lines to go bad. Either way - I think VW - and to some extent, the entire world, kinda - would be in a better state - if it didn't have to close down factories in Germany. Thanks to people who are called Gretha, I guess - well, and all that green-eyed illusion stuff. It would be really interesting to find out - if anyone did the (nowadays hugely unpopular) calculation. Is the world better off - with the air coming out of the exhaust on this Touareg - after it has passed through EGR, catalytic converter, and a diesal particulate filter - or with China producing Teslas, Hoyas, BYDs, Dongfengs and GWMs (Great Wall Motor? what can be bad about it?) with its (non-existant) environmental standards. Remember - this Touareg is still collecting miles - while most Teslas and Build Your Dreams - are left by the wayside three to five years in (at most). So, Gretha? What's it gonna be? Oh, by the way - Hovie talking about the famous Dieselgate. Imagine you're a German engineer. Imagine you have spent your entire life building a dream diesel engine. It's powerful, huuuugely economical in terms of MPG - and relatively clean (especially compared to older diesels - still running around, by the way, in case of many trucks). You spend your life - enormous economic resources as VW in general - and you get stifled with idiotic legislation - issued by clueless boys in the gov -- because your work is not good enough. Soooo...... You have the not-so-popular option - to install a slight ECU tune... which... makes the car work better or worse - depending on certain criteria (which just happen to coincide with circumstances on the test run stand.) Oh, by the way - talk about dieselgate? I cannot help myself. Let's talk about LEADGATE. Lead has been long ago (more than 80 years ago) been known as extremely poisonous, having ruined lives of hundreds of thousands of people GLOBALLY - during these 9 decades - and some small piston engine aircraft - ARE STILL allowed to use leaded gasoline. The research is overwhelming. Speaking of research. MIT (yes, that MIT) - did a research. According to their research - Dieselgate - in which most German (and some american) manufacturers were found guilty - caused "possible life shortening consequences" to 571 people. WORLDWIDE. During all the 8 years the GATE was going on. Meanwhile - in each country - every year - tens of thousands - actually DIE (as opposed to possibly life shortening) from mining accidents, smoking, alcohol, cancer, etc, etc, etc. Totally preventable causes, right? Also - do you think VW could have used the billions it used - to improve - and clean up - their diesel engines? They're still around, by the way - available, thanks god - and they're still very powerful, extremely frugal - and pretty reliable (in spite of all the environmental crap that has been added on them). Especially in larger cars. And now they conform to EU7 norms. Also - ten largest ocean ships of the world - emit the same amount of CO2 - as ALL passenger cars - in entire EU. How's that for a Gretha-happy factoid?

Slightly more than 7 years ago I bought a post-dieselgate 2013 3.0 TDI Touareg. Last year at this time I had the dreaded oil-in-the-valley situation which I understand is a common oil cooler problem that happens at the 130,000+- mile mark. Local dealer told me it would require engine removal and $5000 to fix. An independent shop fixed it for considerably less and didn't pull the engine. Pricey repairs? Yes. But I expected that would be the cost of membership and I still absolutely LOVE my TDI Touareg!

I currently have a Tuareg V10 TDI, and the thing is a BEAST. Just for fun, me and my friend had a little tug o' war between the Tuareg and his 11,000 lbs lifted Ford Excursion 6.0L Powerstroke. With the rear locker and 4 low engaged, the VW pulled the Ford without breaking a sweat. Another time, I was on Pismo Beach once, and this poor man and his family got stuck with his pickup truck and 5th wheel trailer. I only had a static rope, so I couldn't really yank on the bumper, but I gently took out the slack and then let the V10 eat and she pulled that consist right out of the sand, probably 20,000 lbs all around. The guy was gonna pay $500 for an actual tow truck to come recover his vehicle, but I did it for free. Despite coming with 550 lb-ft of torque from the factory, a chip tune could easily get you around 800 lb-ft. Not to mention that sweet sweet billowing soot out of the exhaust. Now obviously, a chip tune does mean that you have to service your engine more often, and since a simple diagnosis at a shop is guaranteed over $1000, I wouldn't recommend it. I took the tune off the car and it's been extremely reliable since then, has 240,000 miles currently. However, with the tune, that thing launched like a stabbed rat. 0-60 probably in around 5 seconds, which is insane for a 5,000 lb SUV. My favorite feature about that car is the fact that it has air suspension, not so much for the off-roading prowess, but the fact that the car has on-board air, and easy access to that air which can inflate an air mattress. With the rear seats folded down, you could easily get a full mattress in the back for activities. 😏

The padding is common on the VAG diesels, especially here in Europe! It is "very good" at catching oil, but absolutely horrible when you have to remove it once it's soaked. There was also a petrol W12 variant, although I believe I can count those encounters on one hand.

Hoovie get a 1.9TDI VW group car. Trust me, that engine is super reliable, i have a Audi A3 1.9tdi with 800 000km (497 097 miles) and i had zero issues. Only had to replace a turbo and a clutch. P.S the best 1.9TDI engine has 135hp but is a good engine to tune and great torque.

The V10 TDI is my absolute favorite engine, so I'm gonna nerd out a little bit. Things that are proven, not to actually require an engine out: Alternator, Turbos, starter, Tadem and vacuum pump (and some other smaller things as well). There is no timing belt or chain in these, they're gear driven and the accessories are driven by couplers of off the gear drive. The Blanket on the oil pan is in fact there to dampen the noise from the gear drive (and also for thermal management reasons). I Usually don't replace the valve covers, I just clean them (no brakecleaner!), use Liqui Moly rubber care and seal the edges with a little bit of RTV. That's always worked great for me. Do beat on these until the Oil temp is at 80°C, or the turbos will fail. Also let the engine idle, until the Oil temp is back at 90° before shutting it off! These things are really not all that complicated, they're just a very tight package and as most german diesels, they will last a long time and be reliable, if they're treated right. Btw, the Touareg has loads of space around the V10 compared to the V10 in the Phaeton :) Also If you read this Hoovie, you can treat the Key as a button basically. Just twist and let go. The ECU will wait for the glow plugs and start the engine automatically.

I love my 2006 vw v10 with 87k miles. I boughtbit brand new. It has enough power to pull anything ive ever tried to pull. Just know if anything under the hood needs to be looked at or replaced you'll have to drop the engine. After the 4th time I've gotten really good at it and know what the correct order is when removing the subframe and the correct order putting it back in, yes it goes back in differently than coming out. But the ride is amazing and it looks like something they put out today, shirty electronics and all lol. Just so you know they had to pit the v8 differentials in it to tow the 747. Be ready to replace your brake pads and rotors a lot.

I have a last year diesel touareg that sat for years at our dealership. It was because of the whole diesel thing that stopped the sale of anything diesel. It's also how I got my company car which was a diesel A6 prestige and I still have it now. Interior wise when you talk about the touaregs they are unmatched as far as I'm concerned. Not only do you have to drop the engine but the right side turbo has to come off. So it just adds more variables for stuff to go wrong

This engine is basically a combination of two 5 pot diesels in a V. These engines were used in several commercial VW vehicles, like the VW Transporter...and the entry level version of the Touareg.

i got the v6 / straight ish 6 version 3.2 im so happy with that motor , it has good decent power and room to spare and also all the options full air with all locking diff modes , the dyna audio stereo systems in these are amazing 14 speakers with a sub made in Holland the sound is so amazing , the tiptronic transmission really pairs up and helps the 3.2 well , and the Italian blue glass for the gauges looks super cool when the sun light hits them , and a super comfortable ride you can drive for hours and still want to keep driving

Lots of high end exotics parts bin and use off the shelf parts from other manufacturers. Your Rolles Royce made BMW sounds....

This is golden era of VW. While their cars were not dependable, they felt special and you can tell they poured so much engineering into them. I think even with their infamous reliability, people will look back fondly on them as EVs are much simpler. We won't see this organized insanity anymore.

The diaper is for heat retention. If I recall correctly it was introduced to help with emissions. Although its barely noticeable a lot of European VW products had them around 2012 ish.

I had one of these when they where new. Got it from a dealer in Holland, and 3 hours later I was back on the UK, it's a 6 hour drive 😂 was an absolute machine back in Its. Was way ahead of the game too, had every option you could dream of. Eventually in year 5 of owning it, valve cover gaskets went and engine ran low on oil, and messed up the turbos. Was a huge repair bill, but after a few weeks the engine seized so was sold to a VW breaker. Not the best financial decision we made for sure 😅beautiful machine though and doubt we'd ever see one like it again

It will most likely be the tandem pump seals on the back of the heads. VW say its an engine out job, but it can be done in situ - a section of the bulkhead needs to be unbolted (behind either head). Thats normally where the worse oil leaks are from on these V10's.
