Get diesel powered older Opel, VW or Volvo with a stick shift (if you know how to use it) for
@StanleyOrloff2 жыл бұрын
Old diesels aren't reliable. They are just cheap. So you buy one, it breaks, you throw it away and buy another one. Yes, naked engine itself can make more than 1mln kms (many of them already made), although other parts around it like turbo, injectors, fuel pump, flywheel aren't reliable and repair can cost more than whole car. If you need cheap and realiable car then go for low class petrol cars like Corolla, Yaris, Civic, Jazz, etc. They are very simple built and has no expensive parts which can brake.

@@StanleyOrloff older Opel, VW and Volvo's came with naturally aspirated engines. They produce less power than their TDI brothers but last much longer. I had ~400k miles on my 91 Astra. Problem with many of those small asian cars is that they rust super fast being super light weight and having super thin metal. I've seen cars twice as new as mine completely rotten. Not to mention Honda/Toyota parts are way more expensive in Lithuania than Opel/VW.

@@240pixel Like the 99% of internet users, suggesting only that car which they has and hating every other car. But I don't care, buy any car you want.

@@StanleyOrloff I had dozens of cars many bad and some pretty good. I do currently drive 2009 Civic. So your assumption wasn't correct.

If you want to include something on buying a car that is under arrest (turto areštas - basically a seizure that’s on the title and prevents the new owner from registering the car), get in touch with me. I have some first-hand experience to share...

Is it worth buying a car if the public transit, bus, and train system is so good? You mentioned a lot of problems of buying a used car in Lithuania, so I am wondering if it is better to get a new one or just take the public transit systems.

I personally don’t have a car here yet. For my wife it is useful in visiting her family in the rural part of the country and is convenient for travel at times when trains and buses are not available. But I think if most of your life is in the city and you make use of Bolt, taxi, and car sharing programs, then maybe you can avoid the cost and stress of getting a car. I think if you just make sure to get a used car inspected by a professional it could be worth buying one… but that is just my guess 😃

Public transport in Vilnius is probably the worst among other European capitals. Although Vilnius is tiny city, so if you live and work in the middle of it then you don't need a car for transportation. In center or oldtown even bicycle is faster than a car. But if you live in a suburb or want to travel in Lithuania then public transport could be a nightmare.

Is an international driver’s permit needed to drive in Lithuania? I have a US drivers license.
@LithuaniaExplained2 жыл бұрын
If you are using a foreign driver's license, it is generally a good thing to have. An International Drivers Permit (IDP) helps you drive overseas using your own valid driver's license and is often required by car rental companies and might be requested by traffic authorities if you show your foreign driver's license.
