Used Tesla is the way to go. Tesla Model 3 can last up to 300,000 to 500,000 miles per Elon Musk. Plus Tesla has a 100,000 miles battery warranty. Plus, there is a $4,000 federal tax credit. Nice video Joy. At the beginning where you said mileage is no longer the main factor I agree, but recently I have also started to wonder if reported degradation is key or not? I used to think that battery degradation was the figure to look at, but looking at real life battery failures they seem to go from: no problem, working well, low degradation to suddenly won't charge. And the factor involving that seems to be whether or not a battery been mainly fast charged or slow charged. Just my thoughts. Hope you find a good used deal for your daughter :)

I'm looking to buy a used Model 3 within the year. I wouldn't think about buying one unless I can personally see it charge somewhere somehow. There can be problems with charging and the car's charging port. If there is, I ain't buying it! Some of them allow you to see some data about the battery pack's health/range by going through a few menus on the flatscreen. Even that screen stuff is not entirely conclusive though. A Tesla with the Long Range battery pack has an 8 year, 120,000 warranty on the motor(s), inverter(s)(?), and battery pack. Buy one under that threshold and if it's a problem hopefully it's covered under warranty.

As someone that just bought a used Tesla I can confirm that Recurrent battery report is helpful for comparison purposes but it not the most accurate thing, the battery rating of 95 does not mean the battery has 95% capacity left
@quintonpace23117 ай бұрын
Then what does it mean? To me, it means the battery has 5% degradation.
@brookssolberg43167 ай бұрын
@@quintonpace2311 that’s what I was assuming as well when doing research, but I looked at a few used options that actually had the battery tested and the worst example was a 2018 model, the free Recurrent battery score was a 90 but when the dealer tested the battery they said it’s somewhere between 62-68% battery life left, which made more sense because the batteries were 6+ years old at that point

@brookssolberg43167 ай бұрын
@@TeslaJoy I got it from common sense. If a battery has a rating of 95 out of a possible 100 the natural first thought is that battery has 95% life left (or 5% degradation). You are correct it does not say battery score = battery % but they don’t make that very clear on the report in my opinion. As mentioned above I looked at one with a battery score of 90 but was actually tested to about 62% battery life left which was a little misleading in my opinion because that’s I big gap between battery score vs actual battery life left 🤷🏼♂️

I find that hard to believe. I'm not saying that you are lying, just that Recurrent's analysis of batteries seems to be off more than expected. Most owners of any EV report degradation of 2-5% the first year, then generally 1% every year after that. Best case scenario puts yours at about 6% degradation (94% range), which would be really great, but it's not 99%.

Buying a used EV is not the same as buying used ICE. Firstly, need to consider the mileage. Low 20K miles is fine. A battery pack can degrade easily on charging habits(frequent single digit discharge and prolonged 95% charging, or frequent super charging is bad for the overall cycle life). Also high current L2/L3 is not good for a non silicon carbide PCS on RWD models. Buying from a single owner is good. LFP models are a bit better in battery degradation than NCM, but are available only on single motor configurations. Buying an used rental is not a good idea, since the battery is likely thrashed due to frequent and incorrect super charging. Also a single cell failures are catastrophic on the fully sealed structural packs. Again EV battery packs can fail anytime(driving with coolant line burst), buying used at a discount is a risky decision. There is a definite possibility of outliers that cannot be easily factored in. Not sure of the 3rd party assurance🤞, unless they provide a money back warranty for their report(Even Tesla does not warranty their 500k packs beyond 120k miles, which should mean something🤔)😂❤👍

I did watch in full, there is no warranty with recurrent report, seems similar to carfax, except they just collect datapoints from multiple vehicles, to guestimate the expected battery life. All they can do, is measure the cell voltages, charge, discharge cycles, to evaluate the internal resistance of the individual cells served by the BMS. As cells age, their internal resistance increases. Also, if the cells have deviation in their voltages, that cannot be addressed by the BMS balancing, it could pinpoint a potential issue. But all this info. can verywell be ascertained by other diagnostic apps, that use the same data provided by Teslas BMS. Only difference is the additional correlation, if available. Still will not give good numbers without sufficient data points. Since the battery pack themselves, go over varying assembly process, and vary from batch to batch, it is difficult to estimate the expected life precisely. The point is, the battery health report is good than no history. It is more like a doctor diagnosing a patient, with limited information enquiry, might work well if there is a flu that is going around, but cannot diagnose anything specific to patients lifestyle and genetics. Just my 2 cents.
