I fell in love with this same watch two years ago and wanted it as a retirement gift to myself. I put my name on a wait list and was told it would be about 6-12 month wait. I was retiring 9 months later so the timing would have been perfect. Just less than a month after having my name on the list I got the call to pick it up. It is one of the best gifts that I ever gave myself:) I absolutely love it! Congrats on yours and your retirement!!

Glad to have you aboard and congrats on that new watch. I have the 2019 model Sub, which I must admit, is my favourite watch of all time, simply because it's so tough. My observation in my local AD is that any person walking in off the street gets ‘put on a mythical wait list’ while others who have a history (doesn’t seem to matter how much you spend for my AD at least) of purchasing puts you into a position to have special occasion watches get you a call. Many of these hot watches are in the vault of the store, and the AD selects who gets it and who doesn’t simply due to demand. Crazy times but I get it. Right now there are hundreds and hundreds of Pepsi’s on Chrono from flippers. A small % of those sell but otherwise they sit. It’s really sad actually.
@TheChapsGuide4 жыл бұрын
I agree, any so-called desirable watch begins its own environment of buying and hoarding by the people who never actually wear them. I'm not too big a fan of the pepsi anymore, I used to like it, but the hype and market factors killed any interest I had (I also had a Tudor GMT pepsi which sated my hunger). I wonder how long it will be before the next zeitgeist watch appears and the pepsi becomes yesterday's watch?
@stebesplace4 жыл бұрын
The Chap's Guide great question. I still like the Pepsi personally, but I believe it’s only due to the historical significance of the colorway, nothing else. I’m trying really hard to not be a fan boy of Rolex but feel the pressure deviating to other brands simply because of the value retention. I feel REALLY good when I walk out of an AD and k ow the watch on my wrist didn’t just lose 15, 20, 30, or even 40% of its value even if I never intended to sell it. The Pepsi craze won’t die down anytime soon however, multi-year orders are being fulfilled and over time (1-3 years) we may see things begin to normalize economically where interests shift elsewhere in the Rolex catalog or other brands, maybe. Who knows, I’d still like my Pepsi!

@TheChapsGuide4 жыл бұрын
I would not suggest the Tudor instead of the Rolex GMT, they are very different animals and do not compare very well. I have both and the Tudor is a big beast of a watch, big, chunky and enigmatic. The Rolex is definitely more dressy and wearable with a wider range of attire. I would wait out for the Rolex if that is your desire, they are becoming a little more accessible now (thanks to CV19) and the period of 'hotness' of the Pepsi and Batgirl will soon cool off. The Tudor is a great watch, in fact, I only filmed an update review video yesterday and I love it - but it is very different to the Rolex (and a lot cheaper too).

Congrats on the root beer, and thank you for sharing your AD story. I also bought my first Rolex recently from an AD (currently the very in-demand yellow dial Oyster Perpetual 36mm) after a relatively short wait, but my story is a bit different. I have a purchase history with my Rolex AD over three years, albeit with non-Rolex brands (TAG, Tutor, JLC and some accessories). I have tried on multiple Rolexes with them, some sport models, some DJs and OPs but never pulled the trigger. Something always felt a bit off with whichever model I tried. So the AD knew I just needed to find the right watch, and I'm not a flipper. Throughout these years, I would keep in touch with my sales rep. I'd text her when there was a shooting incident at the mall she works at; I asked her if she's ok during the Covid lockdown and she was on furlough. You know, just being a decent person and spreading some care. Then Rolex unveiled their 2020 releases, and I loved the yellow dial OP. I texted my rep to tell her this is the first Rolex that I want, and she knew this time I'm serious. She couldn't commit to how long my wait will be, but low and behold, I got the call after a 6-week wait. Quite happy to have finally gotten my first Rolex after having experienced a lot of other brands.
@TheChapsGuide4 жыл бұрын
Congrats on that new OP, I very much like the new colours and particularly like the fact that they are all available in the 36mm (my preferred classic size for dressy watches). Great story! Well done, and congratulations on both your retirement and your new Rolex! I was very moved by your story, not only from your personal perspective, but reaffirming that there are some very honest and pleasant ADs around. I had occasion, finally, to see one of these Root Beer in real life, after two years. I was absolutely blown away with the watch. It was at a non-Rolex AD, however, pre owned and at quite a premium. But it did cause me to go straight to my local AD and put myself on the wait list, with whom I have a great history and rapport as well. Mind you, they are a family owned business here in Western Canada, so of course the volume of watches is not nearly as great as in your situation. Nevertheless, I am prepared to be patient, and I figure the longer I wait the more I will appreciate the watch. I did manage to get a Submariner stainless steel last year in just over a month, so perhaps there is hope! I recently turned 71, so I would like to get at least a few years' enjoyment out of the watch! :) Anyway, again I say well done and well deserved and thanks for your great review! Cheers, Carl

I am really enjoying the RB at the moment (I'm wearing it right now). It has lived up to my expectations and even surpassed it a little. I have to agree the Rolex hype for SS has become outlandish, I have several Rolex SS pieces and wanted to add some colour to my collection with this purchase. I really love gold and would have gone full-gold if money was no option. I have become disenchanted with the SS fad that is presently taking place, which is almost entirely centered around the Sub, Cosmograph and GMT models. I think Rolex has really managed the marketing rather well, making most folks believe there is a shortage and driving desirability for relatively simple watches to fever pitch. Although, if you go looking, you will always be able to find the watch you are after soon enough (I was offered 3 Subs in a week in 2019). The overspill of desirability washes across the rest of range and hence why this GMT is still selling for £3K over list on all sales platforms. My simple advice - gold is gold (100+ X more valuable as a commodity than steel) and will always command residual value based on its base element, SS on the other hand is less reliable as a commodity, as trends change its value and fashionability will fluctuate. If Rolex brings out a new model in 2021 that captures the zeitgeist and becomes the new 'must have' model, see how swiftly you will be able to access a red/blue or blue/black GMT and how fast those grey market prices crash. Always buy a watch because you love it and want to wear it every day, not because you have been influenced by anything else.

In September 2019 I bought a beautiful two tone datejust for my wife from goldsmiths who are part of watches of Switzerland group with the promise of a gmt within a year, when I have popped in to visit them they don’t even seemed bothered about the broken promise so I have now emailed their head office to complain as they shouldn’t make these promises to sell the less desirable products.

I know experiences vary from location to location and even then between the sales agents. Personally, I would never get involved with any arrangements around buying less popular watches to access trendy watches - when you add up the costs, you would be better off buying a Pepsi on the grey market. Fascinating to see that your local AD couldn't help you despite your purchase history but Goldsmiths could.. beautiful watch you chose and I guess quite a lot easier to get at MRSP than a Pepsi.

Thank you for your comments - the GMT is performing well and I am delighted with the watch to date. I think the whole Pepsi market has gone a little nuts of late and will continue to do so for some time. Much as I like a GMT (I have a few in my collection), I would never get sucked into the very clever marketing of Rolex and buy any presently available watch for more than MSRP. Whilst nice, these are not remarkable timepieces and I consider them to be somewhat overpriced for the engineering at MSRP. I must say I dom like the look of the new Sub green, perhaps less so than the Hulk version, but its a really nice watch indeed - enjoy it in good health.

I would certainly go there again (CC). I'm not really looking for a Pepsi myself, the CHNR has taken me by storm and really become my favourite watch swiftly (I also already have a Tudor Pepsi). I'm waiting to see what Rolex bring out on 7th April. Pretty sure there will be an update to the Explorer 2, but unless it goes down to 40mm I'm not interested. I've become more than a little enchanted by gold of late - I really like the allure of genuine precious metal, opposed to the SS models.

I'd definitely give it a go - my unexpected success took me by surprise, but I imagine situations like these must be more and more common. Since making this video, I have been contacted my the original store (the one that quoted me a 3-4 year wait) to tell me that they had a Rootbeer coming into stock for me (a wait of 2-months from my initial enquiry). I declined obviously, but it does show that the watch situation has become extremely fluid.
@j.burgess44594 жыл бұрын
I found out about this interesting video on Paul Thorpe’s channel😊 Rolex ADs are now (according to reports I have heard from several sources) now operating a preferred client model rather than waiting lists. It isn‘t clear exactly what tests they apply, but a person’s age, dress, and the watches he already owns very likely come into it? What they are ultra-keen to do is to weed out the track-suited spivs who are buying a steel Rolex watch on Monday and flipping it for a quick profit on Tuesday. Conversely they don’t want the right kind of buyer to have to wait a vast period of time. In your case the new system obviously worked - so kudos to Rolex, I guess!✌️
@TheChapsGuide4 жыл бұрын
Some excellent points in your comments and I think you have hit the nail on the head.
@j.burgess44594 жыл бұрын
BTW Paul Thorpe now has a new video which implies that the first AD mentioned here asked you to buy jewellery in order to get the watch from them? Is this true??
@TheChapsGuide4 жыл бұрын
Hi. I've seen Paul's video, he asked for my permission to use my material, but I played no part in the content. The initial AD mentioned in my video has never suggested I make any purchases to enable the purchase of any item from their store. In fact, they have been very helpful indeed over the few years I have been dealing with them. I genuinely believe that they were unable to source a piece in the timeframe I was seeking a watch. I disagree with Paul's suggestion that they would not have sold me the watch even if they had one, as I was already an established customer - I am a very irregular customer so they would not have benefited in any way. I don't know how ADs operate elsewhere, but I would never personally deal with anyone who made such a suggestion to me. Hope this clarifies this point for you.
@j.burgess44594 жыл бұрын
@@TheChapsGuide Many thanks. This is exactly what I thought. Paul does have a bee in his bonnet when it comes to Rolex ADs, I'm afraid.

Am buying this watch. Have 2 legit worries tho. One is thatI’ll buy the watch and soon after Rolex will alter it in a much better way - brown dial, jubilee band, etc. And my second worry is the softness of the metal. Rose gold isn’t particularly robust. So basically I’m wondering how your watch finish is holding up? I’d like to have this watch as a daily wearer, but if it’s nothing but scratches and dings after a couple weeks - you see my dilemma? Am I worried over nothing? Or does this watch need to be hardly worn to keep looking good? I imagine many Root Beer potential buyers here might be wondering the same thing. Could you please help us out by relating your experience - thank you much.
@TheChapsGuide3 жыл бұрын
Certainly, happy to assist. I have now owned this watch for about 5-months and have worn it almost every day (it's on my wrist right now). It has become my firm favourite over this time and has usurped my Submariner for the time being (I think I prefer the Sub in the warmer months). The RootBeer (RB) wears exceptionally well and certainly has a charm and charisma that is not evident in its monochromatic stainless steel siblings. The brown dial and the everose gold brings a warmth to the piece that gives depth to its appeal, without being too ostentatious. The everose gold do swiftly show small swirls and micro scratches with daily wear, but this is normal to any gold piece and is hardly noticeable unless you get an eyeglass out and scrutinise the centre links. I wear my RB in most daily situations and it has performed very well and has shown no signs of visible deterioration. The polished centre links still shine with their pink beauty and add pleasure to the day. Do I think the watch will be altered in the immediate future. I think this is unlikely, the movement is the new type and this watch was only released in 2018, so updates are unlikely for several years in my experience of Rolex. Also, Rolex have alluded to the fact that the GMT range is delineated by the steel models having jubilee bracelets and the precious metal variants having oyster bracelets. I think this situation will persist into the immediate future, at least until the GMT range undergoes its next overhaul. The bezel colour is unlikely to alter in my opinion, as all the current GMT II range have bi-colour bezels to show the night/day split and I don't think that they will offer a solid colour bezel again, as this detracts from its practicality. However, I could be very wrong and any of these things may occur, if they do, well, so be it. Your enjoyment of your watch should not be determined by what else is on the market, but by the fact that you want it for its looks now. There is always a compromise to be sought - personally I would love to have a solid gold GMT RB, but the cost is way beyond my means - we can all dream.

Anyone, who can afford any watch, should be able to buy one, no matter what they are wearing on their back, or wrist! I loved, buying a Sub black, Ali in the early, 00's wearing a short sleeved T-shirt & Jeans! I asked for the manager, I told him it was my day off, and that I prefer to be comfortable, during the summer months, and not being constricted by, a shirt & tie etc... I said, don't judge a book by it's cover, and hopefully you'll make a sale today! I like, a Submariner Date in black. Bish bash bosh! Job done! I had, the money and I got a watch! Simple! I hate, snobs and people who, judge people, unfairly! Look, if I'm in an AD/ Goldsmiths or whatever, and I'm serious, about buying anything, they have! These days, you can log into your, bank accounts on your phone etc! Then, it shouldn't matter what I'm wearing, I should be able to buy!! No good, wearing a suit if ypu only have, £50 in your watch buying account!! Tell them straight, show them you can pay! If they, don't sell to you, then it's their loss, not yours!! My watch, currently sells secondhand, some circa £4k more than I bought it for! But, it's my first + £1k watch, that I ever bought, and as such will be, handed down, to my son.... I fancy, a Black Bay this year.. I'll be wrapped up warm, after any initial, phone calls etc... Then, if and when the watch is ready etc.. I'll go, and buy it, in said Winter coat & gloves etc! I'm not, putting on a suit! They either want, my money, or they don't!! 👍

I agree in principle, but looking smart and presentable will always open a few doors for the well dressed chap in my experience and lets never forget that human beings are hard wired to take a first impression of people within a few seconds of initial observation. I generally always dress to impress, so did not specifically dress for my visit to the AD, but then again, I would always put a bit more effort into special occasions in my life and wearing a jacket and slacks is hardly an imposition to held build a good first impression with someone I want to receive good service from - but I do take your point entirely - this should not be a necessity, but an exception.

The Tudor GMT is a great watch, I been wearing mine for the last few days and am just about to shoot a long-term owners update in the near future (probably Jan). It has been a great watch, much better since I swapped it onto a leather strap from the metal bracelet (which was disappointing). The watch itself is a really robust and competent piece. Plenty of character and feels so tough that you could hammer nails in with it. I think its hard to beat for the price - the only downside is the size. It is a little chunky, but if you have wrists of 7in you will be fine. I have 6.5 in wrists and this is as big as I could wear without feeling uncomfortable.
