In this video we use a Rolex GMT Master II 126710 Pepsi to show you how to set the GMT watch for 2 timezones, how to set the GMT watch for 3 timezones, and how to use the GMT watch as a compass. The GMT watch complication has been around for over 50 years thanks to Pan American Airlines and Rolex. And 50 years later the GMT complication still serves a purpose. In this video we show you how to use a GMT watch.

Billy, you can also do this with any watch. I learned this in Boy Scouts. Point the hour hand at the sun. Bisect the smaller of the two angles created by the hour hand and the 12 marker. (One will be less than 180 degrees, the other greater than.) The bisecting line of the smaller angle is pointing South. North is in the opposite direction. So, say your watch reads 4:00. Point the hour hand at the sun. The angle created between the 12 and the 4 is bisected at 2 by a line that points South. Directionally opposite this line is North. In this case it would over the 8. Watch the video again. When he shows the dial with the GMT hand facing North. The line created by the GMT hand bisects the dial on the other side between 5 and 12. This points South. Pretty neat.

I never knew this but always loved the Pepsi bezel and tracking a second time zone but I didn’t know you could track 3 zones and use it as a compass. That’s really is incredible considering it was created so long ago. If you don’t have access to a smart phone for some reason or get lost in the woods you can use that watch to find north and get home. Amazing.

I've been a pilot since 1972, and worn a GMT 16750 (two time zones) since 1983. My go to international GMT for my last years as a 777 pilot flying LAX, HKG and LHR was a Glycine Airman Base 22 as once set, it gave THREE concurrent time zones without having to rotate the bezel. So for me, this was better than upgrading to the GMT Master II. Plus the Airman is just as iconic (more affordable and accurate) as the Rolex.

For people without a GMT watch, you can still use your time-only watch as compass: Just adjust yourself so the hour hand points towards the sun and the imaginary middle line between the hour hand and your twelve hour mark is the north-south line with south towards the sun after noon and the opposite before. During summer / day light savings - use 1pm instead.
@CountArtha
@CountArtha Жыл бұрын
I learned that in the Boy Scouts. A sun dial works on the same principle: The Sun casts a shadow from the center of the dial that points directly away from the Sun. In the Northern Hemisphere the Sun is due south of you at noon; so the shadow points due north (the "twelve o'clock" position).

No, it’s not a mistake. The GMT hand is pointing to 2200 on the 24-hour scale per the bezel. It moves at half the speed of the hour hand, so it actually takes 24 hours to make one full trip around the dial instead of 12 hours for a normal hour hand. Thus, by pointing it at the 11 marker per the dial, it’s actually two hours away from midnight instead of one because it takes twice as long to get there.

@BlueLineSpeed
@BlueLineSpeed 4 жыл бұрын
Small info correction, there are approximately 38 time zones. Not 24. Some countries use a half hour intervals (Like India’s +5:30 hours, or Nepal +5:45). Adding up these national differences worldwide it comes to around 38 time zones, but this does change occasionally. ~ You also had the GMT hand set to 2300 whilst declaring 2200, but good video description nevertheless.
@CrownandCaliber
@CrownandCaliber 4 жыл бұрын
Hey BlueLineSpeed, You're absolutely correct. They're constantly adding the half-hour and even quarter-hour timezones. When we last looked we believe there are 40 timezones. We actually have a video coming out soon where we look at the Vacheron Patrimony Traditionnelle World, which manages to time 37, based on how many existed in 2015. In regards to the GMT hand, this is what we're referencing - A lot of people get this confused because they look at the GMT in reference to the dial, which is based on the 12 hour scale thus the 12 hour markers. When in reality it should be measured in reference to the 24 hour bezel, which is correctly set to 22:00. We hope this clears up any confusion and thanks for watching!

@@anmara4071 hahah that’s very confusing and I also comment the same but Nathan (Crown and Caliber’s one, not me) is right. You actually have to imagine the 24h bezel in its native position to read the GMT hand time correctly. 🤯 🤓🥳 hahah
@naycnay
@naycnay 2 жыл бұрын
@@anmara4071 I know this is old, but you set it to GMT +0 (London time) ideally and read it by it's general position. It sweeps around the clock once every 24H (rather than 12), so if it was at 6 o'clock, that'd be 12:00 (midday). Every half hour increment is an hour to the GMT hand. So if it points to 11, it's 22:00, 11:30 is 23:00 and 12 is back to 00:00. That tells you what time it is in GMT +0. When you rotate the bezel in increments that match a second time zone (eg GMT -5), the GMT hand points to the second time zone on the bezel. So GMT +0 using the watch dial, GMT -5 references the bezel. Technically you could set the GMT hand to any time zone, then the bezel is relative of that (+/- the hours difference), but you'd always have to remember what the GMT hand was set to. The normal watch hands are always set to local time. So if you pause at 4:16, it explains. 17:00 local time because of the normal hands (only real way to tell AM/PM is to use the GMT position and understand the offset). GMT +0 is 22:00 because it points to 11 on the watch dial. 14:00 in SF is the GMT hand pointing to the rotated bezel, which is offset GMT -8.

Nice watch, good video. Agree with the EST is GMT-5 comment. I disagree when you say you can “see” three time zones at once. You can see two then rotate the bezel for a third. (Which you could rotate again for a 4th and on and on. ). Instead of rotating 1,2,3, and saying yes it’s now 1400 (when it was 1700), you could also say 17 minus 3 is 14. (In your head). And yes I can do 0200 minus 3 is 2300. But I only “see” two times displayed at any one time. Pizza timer without alarm is also useful.
@CrownandCaliber
@CrownandCaliber 4 жыл бұрын
This is definitely an advanced way to use a GMT, and only works with a true independent hour hand. Since a GMT hand makes one revolution in 24 hours (think Military time) the bezel is really just a convenience in knowing the time it represents. With practice one can read the GMT hand regardless of the bezel’s orientation. If you were to cover up the bezel in our example at 4:18, the GMT hand is still reading 10:00 pm. Bringing the bezel back into play can allow you to measure two separate time zones with just the GMT hand. Then you add in the independent hour hand for the 3rd time zone. So that’s where the added complexity and practice comes into play. Thanks for watching!

I guess we could ask the same thing about the date, time keeping in general, or the compass. We could simply look at our phones for all of this information. Why have a date complication? It is ease of use, i guess. all of this in one piece of art that we know will last the test of time... it's pretty awesome.

Possible dumb question: when you want to track 3 time zones, does one of those time zones have to be Greenwich Mean Time (aka GMT)?
@jnoemi225
@jnoemi225 3 жыл бұрын
Third time zone is a bit of a copout....you have to remember the place of the bezel before you can check the third time zone...not really at a glance...I guess if you have a good enough memory, you can track all of the time zones "at a glance"!....Still love the watch though, and great video! Also, that compass thing is awesome!! I had no idea that was an option! Great watch!

Just a quick question.... At 4:16, you show Atlanta time as 5:00P, which I see, and San Francisco time as 1400, which I also see. However, the graphic shows GMT time as 2200, but the GMT hand seems to be at 2300.... Do I misunderstand this or is this just an error? Thanks.
@CrownandCaliber
@CrownandCaliber 4 жыл бұрын
Great question Rich. And this is probably the single biggest questions we get asked about the GMT complication. The graphic IS correct. The GMT complication must be read irrespective of the dial. And since the GMT hand only makes one revolution every 24 hours 11 o'clock on the dial IS actually 10:00pm GMT time and 11:30 on the dial would be 11:00pm GMT time. Let us know if you have any additional questions. And thanks for watching!

@@CrownandCaliber Nope ... am still really struggling to get this concept. Am being incredibly "thick" as we'd say in the UK ;-) How do you mean "irrespective of the dial"? What are you actually looking at? How does the position of the GMT hand say "GMT is 22:00" in your example?
@charlesriches4336
@charlesriches4336 3 жыл бұрын
@@sean1e100 The Red GMT hand only rotates once a day around the watch face, so the Hour indices should read as even hours with odd hours in-between! Therefore, at the 11 o'clock position shown in the graphic, the 24 Hour indication would represent "2200 Hrs" with two hours to go before midnight. Hope this helps.
@charlesriches4336
@charlesriches4336 3 жыл бұрын
......so, half the distance again, RED hand GMT will be 2300GMT midway between the 11 & 12 o'clock positions, becoming 2400/0000 at the 12 o'clock position.

I purchased my GMT Master in 1984 at the Rota NAS Spain Exchange. But my bezel doesn't "CLICK' as you demo'd. Does this mean I have the original GMT Master? I did have it "rebuilt" many years ago so I wonder if they could have not reassembled it correctly? Guess I need to break out the User Manual as I kept ALL the documentation.

The watch is beautiful. But how do you know GMT time is 22:00 after you moved the bezel? I understand, 5pm Atanta Time, I can see the GMT hand at 14, meaning 14:00 in San Francisco. But how do you still know it is 22:00 GMT time?

Thanks for the great video. And maybe I'm just slow, but when using the GMT for 3 time zones, I get that the hour hand points to local time, GMT hand points to time #2, but is it just up to you to add 8 to zone #2 to get to GMT time? Do you just have to have that memorized, as there is nothing (in your example) pointing to 2200?
@CrownandCaliber
@CrownandCaliber 4 жыл бұрын
Hey David Epperson, Doing three timezones is definitely an advanced technique. Because the GMT hand makes one revolution in 24 hours one should be able to tell the time based on the GMT hand regardless of bezel orientation. With a little practice you'll be able to look at the dial and see your local time and the timezone produced by the GMT without the bezel. The numbers on the bezel are what allow for the third timezone without having to do the math. Let us know if this helps!

I had the same confusion at first, I was reading what the GMT hand was pointing to on the 12 hour dial and thinking "It's pointing at either 1100 or 2300 hours" at 3:57, but it's actually meant to be read by reading the bezel's 24 hour time. Then you'll know with the bezel at the 12 o'clock position the GMT hand is pointing to the current GMT hour, and you just need to rotate the bezel clockwise or anti-clockwise based on the timezone you want to check. I never even realised the GMT hand moves around at half the speed of the hour hand, know I know.

@HankTheTank23
@HankTheTank23 2 ай бұрын
