They're called DAPs which stands for Digital Audio Players. People in this market that buy these players don't listen to mp3 files because of their low resolution. flac, DSD, WAV, MQA and the like are what they listen to; CD quality and above only. Phones also can't drive the headphones that they like to use (save for LG's quad DAC equipped phones that had decent amplifiers as well). If you knew, sorry to bore you. If you didn't, check it out. You'll understand why there's a market for this stuff.

Weirdly enough, my number one thing when I was initially getting a DAP last year was that it _didn't_ run Android. I wanted a simple, single-use device that could deliver high quality playback. The whole point was to have fewer distractions when listening to my music, not simply migrating the same ones over to a different device.
@SaveMeAzathoth22 күн бұрын
But Android DAPs by default don't have the distractions of an Android phone. As much as "you can install anything from the Play store" gets brought up, in practice you just install your preferred streaming service or offline music player and maybe a tool to sync your collection and that's all you run. Sure you *can* go out of your way to install email or social media or whatever distractions but people should keep their eye on the prize and not forget why they bought the thing.
@alertArchitect22 күн бұрын
@@SaveMeAzathoth I'd rather just have a simple player that I can drag & drop files into without having to deal with extra nonsense while also avoiding the temptation of putting KZbin, games, etc. on there when I just want a dedicated music playback device.
@SaveMeAzathoth21 күн бұрын
@@alertArchitect Don't get me wrong, I think that people with large music collections can get a lot of value from non-Android DAPs. The "this is sufficient, why pay more for more than I want?" factor is sufficient reason though without imagining temptations of Android that don't actually exist in practice. Android-based DAPs are generally sufficiently bad fit for running KZbin or games that anyone worried about their lack of willpower is just going to give in to the temptation to pick up their smartphone long before they seriously consider having those apps on their music player.
@alertArchitect21 күн бұрын
@@SaveMeAzathoth I'm not "imagining temptations." I'm literally describing the biggest distractions I deal with on my phone on a daily basis thanks to my ADHD, which I specifically wanted to _avoid_ when getting a DAP so I could use it to focus on the music I love. I'm sure there are plenty of other neurodivergent people who agree with me that the temptation of being able to put those major distractions, such as KZbin or small games, onto a device meant to be just for music is enough to justify avoiding Android entirely when purpose-buying a product for music playback. Also, as I said in my last comment, the bigger consideration was being able to simply drag-and-drop my music files and easily play them without needing an app - which you seemingly chose to ignore in favor of ridiculing the idea of apps _literally designed_ to entice you into doomscrolling with easy dopamine hits (something that especially traps ADHD folks like myself) being distracting temptations someone may want to eliminate entirely.
@SaveMeAzathoth21 күн бұрын
@@alertArchitect I didn't ignore that bigger consideration; I attempted to acknowledge it as good and sufficient before moving to what I disagreed with. I'm sorry that I messed up my choice of words there and muddied my intent. We are talking about devices that compared to your phone are not-always-on, not-always-connected, have mediocre screens, old processors, low ram, cramped storage already spoken for by the music collection, and (at least in some cases) painfully noticeable lag between audio and video. That's all friction against being used for things other than music. The second line of defence against those apps breaking through your intent to not install them in the first place is them not functioning as designed to generate dopamine and getting uninstalled in disgust. But maybe my imagination doesn't go far enough to understand the people who whom that still isn't enough and your experience is beyond me.

You really need to understand that DAPs are very successful espcially in Asia. There are quiet a few making them and the quality is excellent compared to phones which are a compromise all around. They support HiRes audio and given they only play music all the money is spent on quality components for that purpose. They arent a novelty as you say.
@Denki24 күн бұрын
I'm fully aware of their success in Asia, but that doesn't make them any less a novelty or niche like a CD player, vinyl or cassette. It's a device you use for a specific use case, where the mainstream will always gravitate towards phones as a general use device regardless of whether you're an American or are in China, Japan etc... There's a reason why stores like e-earphone are considered specialty, and why phones/BT headphones are on the first floor of Yodobashi Camera
