I purchased a $5000 bracelet in EFFY on my last cruise. I had all my paper work prepared and was ready to declare my purchase as I routinely do each cruise. This particular time it was a complete hassle disembarking the ship. I was a suite guest, was taken off the concierge disembarking escort line. I had to meet with custom officials and in addition go to a separate dedicated customs office within the terminal. It was quite time consuming. What should have been a great experience wasn’t exactly. Lesson learned I will be doing all my future high end purchases from home.

Beautiful coat! Now that my three daughters are through college, we've paid for weddings and our retirement funds are well on the way, it's time to splurge now and then on ourselves. After living frugally for so many years, it's a hard mindset to change.

I got a London Fog trench coat in Reno for like $19 about 40 years ago. It was on clearance and I loved that coat. I also was stationed in London in 77-78 and bought one (don’t know the brand) and wore it (same color) all the time. Had tall brown boots and an umbrella. Would get off work at 11am (started at 6) and just walk. Lived and worked half a block from Selfridges so I was already in great location. I was stopped many times by people asking directions, the Brits would always look at me funny when I started talking but I always knew the directions.

What a beautiful coat! And a great buy! I agree … you should definitely celebrate once in a lifetime purchases. When I bought my first home my realtor wrapped the front door with red ribbon and a huge bow and took a photo of me outside! It was a wonderful day!!

I loved hearing this story and so happy for you that were able to get the coat of your dreams and in SUCH a memorable way!! Amazing! We have purchased luxury goods overseas several times and thankfully, it's never been a hassle. We have always found that the prices for non-US based brands is always cheaper in Europe, even after conversion and especially when factoring in the VAT refund. My first Louis Vuitton purchase was a key pouch at the flagship LV store in Paris. I was not spending very much money, relatively speaking, and my husband also purchased a small card holder, but they brought out champagne for us anyway and made it such a special experience! Maybe because it was the first LV purchase for both of us, maybe because we chatted and asked questions and were very friendly with staff. Whatever the case - it was such an amazing time and one I'll never forget! So yes, always welcome the celebration and just enjoy the moment! ☺

Love Burberry! We have made luxury Watch purchases on our last couple cruises and it’s a simple process and usually discounted (on top of tax savings). Yes have your documentation ready, but we’ve had a similar experience at Customs that you did with your watch. Plus, it makes a great shopping story, as we are usually celebrating a milestone on cruises.

Oh, I’m going to need a video on generational wealth and the pros and cons. I started brokerage accounts for my niece and nephew as soon as they were born and contribute every year to them. We just returned from a Mediterranean cruise for our 25th anniversary. I bought a gorgeous Greek key design ring and necklace from a jeweler in Santorini, and they were lovely in walking me through the VAT process and also offered some wine. It was a family-run business and they were just lovely. We had a great experience and will always remember how they celebrated this with us. However, VAT in Greece is 24%! Yikes. I wish I had researched this more before I went. I submitted my VAT form at a booth at the airport (Rick Steves references it in a video so I think it’s legit) but apparently we don’t get the 24% back! It was only about 10%. Ugh! I’m working on letting it go and enjoying this gorgeous keepsake and reminder of this wonderful trip. First world problems! I splurged (it was a splurge for me - I love to shop but always am looking for a deal) on a J Crew Icon trench, brand new on Poshmark - for only about $150. And I love it! She was not super helpful but was pretty clear that we only get 10% back, and it wouldn’t matter if I took the cash there or mailed my form in. So 🤷‍♀️ it all seems confusing and just a tad scammy? But again- first world problems. 😊

I'm curious about the fit and sizing of the waterloo. I had bought the Kensington coat in size 8US/10UK and although it looked good at the shoulders, I found it too restrictive with the set-in sleeves, so I returned it. I see that the waterloo has raglan sleeves, so I imagine that it would be much less restrictive. What size in the waterloo would you recommend? I don't care for a too oversize look. Thanks!
