The fact that you are willing to share your knowledge without keeping it to yourself is making you not only a trustful professional, but also a remarkable human being. A lot of us don't have the means to get useful information and advice like those you present, so in behalf of this part of fellow artisans: *THANK YOU BASIA!

Thank you so much fofi, this truly means everything! ❤️❤️❤️ There's so much information out there, I believe haven't even covered 20% of it, but hopefully, what I did share, can be useful to others :) I've learned tons in the process and I don't think sharing this will make the competition worse. On the contrary, community over cometition 😃 There's enough room for all of us! :) And of course thanks to all these sweet makers that shared their experiences with me in the first place, that I was able to make these videos too!

I came across your channel by happenstance just a few hours ago so I haven't had the time to watch more than like 5 videos so far, but I can say, without a doubt, that I really like what I've seen. You have nice pace even for someone like me who has a really hard time keeping focus, yet manage to get a lot of information in a very concise manner. So, job very well done, in my humble opinion (it doesn't happen very often - like _at all_ - but I actually subscribed like a third way into the second video and believe me: that says a lot in my world!). I realize this video's already closing in on two years since it was published (or uploaded, or what-ever the kids say these days ;) ), and as I've understood things, a lot of content creators doesn't really keep track on their comment sections for more than less than a day and often not even that so I don't know what the chanses are you'll ever see this. But you never know and the best way to not being heard is to keep silent, so I'm just going to shoot from the hip in the dark and who knows: if I'm lucky, maybe I'll hit something - at some time, in some way. Enough with the me-rambling-on-and-on-and-on-and... Let's get on with the gemstone's and the jewelry and you requesting feedback and future ideas for videos! *_Amber!_* I'd love to see a video about amber. From what I've gathered, amber is one of the most commonly fraudulently faked stones (as in: not at all amber, but sold as such. So, pure frauds.) and those manufacturing fake amber is apparently very skilled at it (which is strange to me, but I'm close to the Baltic See, so perhaps I'm just spoiled or something). Anyway, you' might not be "in" to amber - in to using it in your jewelry that is - and/or don't feel you can (or want to) provide any valuable info on the matter, but if you do, I for one would love a "deep-dive" video (or just a regular one) on amber. How to determine the real deal from the fake, resources for purshase, how to polishing raw amber ... any and all you're willing to share - it would all be greatly appreciated! But even if there's nothing you're willing or able to share on that subject, I maintain: Thank you for sharing anyway: I already have several more of your videos lined up in the que as is and I'll definetly be back for more later on as well! Cheers!

Basia, I've really enjoyed this gemstone series and you've done an awesome job sharing tips and advice! For those of you who might be overwhelmed: don't worry! Think of the biggest advice Basia gave you in this video: Don't be afraid to ask! I've studied jewelry design and one of the courses we had was gemology, and I'm running a jewelry business for over 7 years and I still (or even more and more) know that I don't know a lot about gemstones :D I tell you this, because I want to say: don't let it stop you to start and try, just go out there and ask questions and buy stones that speak to your imagination!
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are totally right!! And I agree, the subject is so broad and complicated, lots of info and so many things to look out for! But it's also very exciting and stones are beautiful :) Asking questions is vital and many fellow makers are happy to help too :) And I love the last part: "buy stones that speak to your imagination" couldn't agree more! ❤️❤️❤️

Stardust Mine Jewellery well at least u can laugh about it now. If we didn't laugh we'd cry eh? 😂.. And the only way we learn I find is to make mistakes and hopefully we won't do them again!! Yes thank u I took alot from your videos especially about Indian stones n who does n doesn't get paid. Made me really think hard bcoz iv seen alot of great deals from there and noticed how the prices were much much lower than others.. So I don't think I would like to support child labor or modern slavery so u openedy eyes to something I didn't give enough thought too, so I really appreciate that alot 😉 In very new to Makin jewlers but Iam loving it so far, i really just make rings but I'm sure I'll stretch out into other things eventually.. Super helpful and informative.. Thank you so much for sharing. I've been fairly lucky so far and I bought most of my stuff on Amazon. It's distressing to hear about the possible working conditions of those persons in India.. a real pity because I've read that while the cut and polish may not be the best you're less likely to get fake stones there.

Thank you so much for watching and your comment! :) I'm really happy you haven't had bad experience. As for India, it's true the stones there are usually real, which is great. Things to look for would be rather poor cutting, cracks or different stones sold as substitutes for other ones. It's all about the research and how transparent the company is. Because not every business is involved in bad work conditions and slave-like work. For example in Jaipur possibly every business is connected with gemstones and there's many good, proud and honest sellers! I would say fakes most likely would be coming from China.

Your accent is really great. I can't place it but it's cute avoiding stigma of sounding creepy thanks foe the facts about this little income stream idea I had. I particularly like your easy production it's actually 👌 crisp and flowing. By all means get in touch here if ya ever want a slight upgrade with the audio I'd be happy to help from pointers (haha to return the favor hey) to cheap tweaks (even though I have no idea how this turned into a shameless self promotion rather than my original sentence summing up my commenting tonight lol) Ive also begun to offer the service as a whole audio production management package. Anywho great info package here I shall give it a post!

How do you find all that information about who found the gems and who cut and who sells. Most sellers assay they are ethical but how do you know.

I just heard a story, which happened recently about a boy in India, the oldest of several children, who wanted to help his mom. His father was dead, so life was very hard for them. One day the boy (somewhere between the age of 9-12) told his mom that he was going to do an errand for her, but instead he went to the coal mine to work to earn 75 cents! That's ALL they paid for a day's labor, but they were so poor even that would help a little. While the boy was working, there was a explosion in the mine and the boy was killed. It's so horrible that they would exploit people and especially children that way!!!

The Mohs scale of hardness is specifically relating to scratch hardness rather than toughness, some relatively hard stones have poor toughness. Some stones are susceptible to damage from heat/cold, others, may cleave easily requiring delicate pressure and protective settings. Either way it's always a good idea to do a bit of personal research into any stone you intend on using before purchasing to ascertain it's suitability for the particular purpose.

I've had the same problems with cracked (and useless) cabs from India on ebay. Also watch out for postage scams - and they often oil up the gems to make them shine and cover bad polishing. Also, I've looked at some of the resources on your list - you can't seriously buy from them, some of the prices are ludicrous.
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing

Yes, exactly! That oiling is honestly ridiculous sometimes haha :) As for those sellers - I've included sellers from different price levels for different needs. Some people collect rare gems (that are perfectly cut, which makes them a work of art in itself) and those are indeed very expensive. I wouldn't expect most of jewellery makers to buy these on the regular basis, but it's good to know about them. Most of the sellers have average pricing though :)

Budget people! Broken section in mineral center is a wonderful place to find affordable arrangement of different qualities of crystals, some need tinkering but you can find beautiful treasures in there. They’ll need cleansing like any other stone- deep cleansing a new stone is good idea (you can wash really well them if they’re water proof of do whatever feels right, the point is that you want to cleans the stone from all negative and all unwanted energy for healing and the highest good of the stone, to be crystal clear to fresh start). If you have cutting and polishing equipment you might even be able to fix or shape rougher/poorly cut stones however you like, I heard one can do it with just a piece diamond sanding paper (sanding paper for stones) and stone polishing products. There are beautiful tutorials for polishing stones.

You can skip the “cleansing” process. Minerals don’t hold any magical energies.
