Almost 60 years ago I had a Saturday and holiday job at a chain of greengrocers in south London. They bought most of their stock wholesale from Borough Market. Recently I visited Borough Market, it's now overpriced retail, packed full of tourists and double your local supermarket!

Great info. What about the New Covent Garden market in Nine Elms 🤔 is that worth a visit?

Sorry to be pedantic but Billingsgate was not a hithe, it was a wharf for sea-going boats with keels to unload their catch. Your source is incorrect and written by someone who didn't understand the distinction. Queenshithe, about half a mile to the west, was a hithe where flat-bottomed river boats were pulled up onto the foreshore.

Bear in mind these places are more for business owners... unless you like being up at 3am to haggle over the price of fruit lol ... Billingsgate is perfect for a special occasion or dinner party, you can find some lovely fish there 👍

Amazing timing, was just looking for videos on billingsgate and watched a few others but none were as informative as this and its only been released 3hrs ago! I didnt even notice when I clicked one question, you mentioned a few times that you have to buy in bulk but what does that actually mean? Is it viable to buy for personal cooking once a week or something? Whats the minimum orders and stuff like that? I've never been so just curious, thanks
@GavinWren Жыл бұрын
Glad to see the algorithm is doing it's work properly! Bulk quantities vary depending on the market. For instance at Spitalfields you can only buy a a whole box of fruit or veg. Boxes vary in size, e.g. the oranges were 10kg, but mangoes came in small boxes of 5 fruit. At Billingsgate you can buy individual larger fish, e.g. salmon or smaller fish/prawns etc by the KG, so you could get just 1kg. At Smithfield most meat was packed/cut into larger pieces, so you're looking at 2-3 kg or more of meat at a time. It's not really worth it for a weekly shop as the traders wouldn't want to sell smaller amounts, it's only worth it when you buy a few kg of a product at a time

Been to them, unless you're having a massive party or shopping for a restaurant, it's not worth it! The hassle of doing the shop in the middle of the night, getting there, taking it back home whilst in many cases still sleepy, then often, sort it out as soon as you get home is too much. You see plenty of deals at the supermarkets, better off getting it there or even the local butcher.

Hey man, any clue which stall you found the sashimi grade fish at?
@GavinWren11 ай бұрын
Had a quick look at my bank statement and I think it was Bobby's Fish. If you're there have a wander around as you'll see it on display at a few stalls.

I though fresh fish shouldnt smell so cab drivers wont have a problem.
@Verudur3 ай бұрын
oh it smells but its not a "bad" smell. thing is, when the juices get into cab's mats etc it will smell after a while and its quite hard to get rid of it :(
